Not quite.

My family and a few friends yearly go out to watch a Shakespeare play. Recently, we've been going to ones that have an interesting bent in humour. This year we saw "As You Like It."

The Forest of Ardenne is pretty much the aftermath of a booze-filled party, the minor character Jaques has a heavy French accent and at the end of the play pointed out how the Duke Frederick's actions had completely upended the court and exited the stage proclaiming "Screw this romance bullshit," Rosalind pretending to be a commoner man excused her high-born accent by saying something like "I gained it from my uncle, who in his youth, was an Australian"...

And the Duke Frederick was using the exact mannerisms of Donald Trump. No stutters, no vagueness, nor ambiguity. Just his accent, gestures, tone of voice, facial expressions, and completely perfect Shakespearean dialogue, and he freaking nailed both.

Yesterday it was 80°F, and today it's 35°F. Get your shit together, Indiana.

I have this friend...his boyfriend, who he met on one of those dating websites, didn't so much break up with him as just stopped having anything to do with him. One week later, he's already on the dating website and hanging out with someone new. He says that he knows he settled with the last guy, but that he's relegated himself to settling just so he won't be lonely. Other friends tell me that's just the way it is now...you find people on apps, get with them, and hope something happens from there.

I just don't understand how people can be so casual with handing their heart to people, even when they know that person isn't exactly what they wanted. As a matter of fact, thinking back across all the people I've attracted to, I tend to go for people out of my league...people whose love would be a challenge to receive. Usually it gets nowhere, but when it does...I have to admit, those have been the most satisfying and fulfilling relationships I've had. Maybe it's just that I like a challenge...but if you're handing your heart to someone and committing your body and soul to them and telling them you love them...shouldn't you be so sure that you love them that you're willing to take on the challenge and try to overcome the odds? For them?

Wouldn't that make having a life with them that much more satisfying? That they're someone you had to fight for in a way and not have just fall in your hands? That it's something you had to work at and pursue and put your heart into even deserve? Maybe that thinking is naive, and maybe because of it I just end up forever alone. It's not like I'm the most attractive person ever to begin with. But...if and when I do have a mate, I want it to mean something. I want it to be a profound statement...that my love and commitment to them are that serious, and that they're that irreplaceable to me.

The last thing that I want is for me and my heart to be things I give casually to a different person every week or every month, just in the name of finding someone. I don't want just someone...I want a life-mate, someone that sparks awe and wonder with the world when I'm with them...who I could imagine exploring life and its many aspects and adventures with...who has a profound impact on me and makes me see things in different ways...who makes me want...need...to give them all the love and attention that I can possibly give, because I know they deserve so much more...

I can't help but wonder how you can find this person if you're casually dating guys just to have a boyfriend and not be alone? How can that mean anything special or important when you can just go from one guy to the next in a week or two and have about the same thing as you did with the last guy? How can you build a relationship that matters if their most important quality is that they're better than nobody at all? How can you invest yourself into someone else that you know you're settling with going into the whole thing to start with?

I guess I'd rather risk being forever alone than to come to think of love as something so...shallow.

There's a balance to be struck.. I don't think we can easily identify who will be best for us, so you have to play the field a bit, get to know lots of different people. Then you'll hopefully eventually find someone who you like that likes you back. It's just a probability thing.

I kind of have the opposite problem.. people fall in love with me all the time.. then I get in super deep immediately and fall in love with the wrong person so quickly but then it takes years to extricate myself from terrible situations that seemed fine at the time over and over.. Dunno, I don't think there's really any perfect way to go about it... Just don't give up on it if you want it and dream about having that perfect relationship... it's important..

Speaking seriously however, love is ultimately a series of chemicals released by your brain to promote pair-bonding for the purpose of having and assisting in the early stages of rearing offspring. I find there's little that's innately transcendental about it; love has whatever meaning you choose to ascribe to it, and it is largely because most people repress and internalize so much of their inner selves that it's an earthshaking experience to truly feel like you can open up to someone, because, I mean, that's sort of the whole 'relationship' thing in the first place.
It's like having a best friend who's a qualified psychotherapist. That you have sex with.
Not to knock any of that. But I mean, shit, if you had a fwb who was a psychotherapist, I doubt there'd be very much different in that relationship.
Or, idk, maybe I'm a sociopath.

Honestly the whole love is just chemicals in the brain thing always seemed so reductionist to me.. that's just stuff happening in the brain at the same time as you're in love. It's like saying sports are just adrenaline and testosterone. There's obviously a lot more going on there, even if chemicals mediate the basic emotional responses.
