  • You drink your Scotch with ice? Filthy bloody peasant!

Indeed, though honestly some literal cold rocks dropped in is better - doesn't dilute the scotch.
Cold drinks are more refreshing, I like the little clink clink sound ice makes, and cold drinks are more refreshing.

I don't think there's a single alcoholic drink that I like better warm than cold.. hmm.. buttered rum perhaps.
Interesting. Don't the rocks add their own flavour though?

That's because American alcohol is lame.  The only reason you're ever served something cold is if there's something wrong with it in Germany/literally anywhere but the United States.

  • Lol, I think we actually have some pretty fine alcohol here in the US. My state has a very large number of microbreweries per capita and there are hundreds of varieties that nobody in other countries have even heard of let alone tasted.

I think some people think that what we drink here is like Budweiser, PBR or Coors or something, when I actually never drink any of those.

As for liquors, chemists could probably verify that our liquor is virtually identical composition wise to european liquors of the same type.

Make something cold, and it tastes better.. that's why they do it.

That can happen with soapstone rocks if you aren't gentle, but pieces have to abrade off of it to change the flavor. I've recently tried stainless steel rocks and I don't imagine they alter the flavor at all.

  • Who needs stiff drinks and rocks when you have stiff cocks and rocks (of a different kind)? I choose to have one vice! :P

I think this year I'm going to resolve to commit more time to the people who commit time to me...the people that talk to me, that have something to do with me. I think the days of trying to strike up or revive friendships with people who won't give me the time of day are over.

Note that this is not a New Years resolution though...just a resolution I happened to have at the beginning of the year. :P

  • Alcohol isn't always a vice, sometimes your mind is never clearer honestly. Helps you figure things out in hard times.

  • But with cocks hard times are a good thing! :P

I don't really care what people do, I've just never personally had the desire to drink or otherwise have an altered state of mind. :P

  • Sometimes a cock isn't readily available, it's relatively easy and safe to purchase alcohol.

  • Unfortunately I haven't seen a whiskey that I liked to date. Maybe someday I'll get something good.

  • I live in Scotland... where people take their whiskey quite seriously and it literally means "water of life" in Gaelic (like the Latin)

    What no whiskey!?

YouTube embed didn't seem to work.. so here's a link

Any market town holds annual beer and whiskey fayres since home brewing has been popular here for a thousand years and home distilling is starting to pick up.

I went to one last year and they had nearly 500 different brews of beer and (I can't remember how many whiskey's but I hazard a guess at) about 50 whiskeys; all of which I had never heard of or tried before... there was also a lot of mead which was different but a little sweet. :P

Whiskey (and alcohol in general) I have found is a very prominent part of the culture here schools and universities often have honorary Quaichs for the sole purpose of drinking whiskey (and often accompanied with an offer of "a wee dram")

When I moved up here at first I didn't really like the taste, smell or anything really about whiskey... but I have to say it's grown on me quite a bit and it certainly has a lot of depth as a drink.

My brother is studying BioChemistry aiming to go into the Brewing and Distilling industry here, and he's told me lots of interesting things about the processes and the history of the industry and techniques... as well as just generally stuff about the drinks. ^-^

It's definitely not a drink for everyone, or a casual drink, and it can be quite harsh on the palette, but it goes really well with a lot of foods (especially the type of food I like) and it can really add poignancy to an event.

  • Admittedly, I haven't given it very much of a chance. I try it and try it, but it's so gross. I already have a hard time taking straight alcohol of any kind, and whisky is pretty much the worst. I have a hard time swallowing things sometimes, and if it happens with alcohol.. oh it hurts so much, I always vomit.
