I know that -- for me, at least -- some people are just not very good at basic conversation. Unless it's about something that really interests me, when someone tries to talk to me, I just don't really know how to talk back other than with very simple answers and then asking the same question back to them.
Also, I'm just not really interested in most people as nobody ever really stays around long enough to take the time and put in the effort to have a true connection with. Having my closest friends from grade school be the groomsmen at my wedding was awkward enough since we hadn't really talked since we graduated. And I'm lucky to have started dating my wife in high school because I would otherwise have a really difficult time with that.
But I don't think most people really have that many actual friends when they become adults. It's something you really have to put time and effort into, so you either do it for a very small group or you just don't do it.
So, basically, I wouldn't take it personally.
