  • You wake up in a room, lying on a couch that is too short for comfort. After stretching and sitting up, you notice that this is not where you fell asleep.

(Images are taken from Google and do not reflect your exact surroundings)

You seem to be in an abandoned log cabin. An ashen fireplace dominates the northern wall while two paintings completely cover the southern. Some shirts rest under a pair of skis in the north-west corner. Next to it, looking damp, are two ski boots. The last occupant of this house clearly was a messy sort because more shirts have escaped the pile and are scattered all over, including on a rug of repeating rings. You yourself are sat at a couch, dull red in colour, set against the western wall. Looking ahead of you is a door with an old rusty knocker. It appears to be styled after some kind of bird. Next to it is a small cupboard with iron handles.

    There are no windows.

Calling for someone provides no answers. Listening, you hear no apparent sounds of life other than an occasional faint buzz. It is cold.

What would you like to do?

  • > Examine paintings

The painting on the right is of a ship tossed around by deep ocean waters. The sail looks torn and defeated by the wind. On the other hand the painting to the left is completely white. Looking closer though… it appears that there are several tiny dots scattered across the painting. A few are labelled, “1,” “2,” “3,” ...but after the fifth number the dots are unlabelled and lonely.

    > Use door knocker

The knocker is rusty and unpleasant to the touch. You knock it once, but nothing appears to happen.

    > Open cupboard

The cupboard is a rickety one. It almost comes apart in your hands when you touch it. Inside, there is a rung for coat hangers. It is completely bare. In fact, there are only two items inside: a pad of paper and a candle, both sitting at the cupboard's base.

You have acquired one (1) candle and one (1) notepad.

  • >Examine the clothes for notes or other things

The four shirts smell like someone had worn them while rolling around in mud. And at the same time they hugged a wet dog. Many dogs.

You turn them around a few times, but there don't appear to be any notes or pockets.

    >See if the painting dots can be connected

With what, your bare hands? You obligingly trace lines on the painting but nothing appears to happen. You do learn that the painting isn't canvas. It's paper.

    Cheapskates.

    >Examine the skis and boots in addition to the clothes

The skis look well loved, only to be abandoned. There are hundreds of scratches across the skis from accidental turns into ice and rocks. The topside has a vibrant swirl of yellow and green, like mustard and blended peas partially mixed.

The two boots match the skis. Unfortunately, the boots appear to be a size too large for you. More’s the pity. In a pinch they could be worn, but, well, they wouldn't exactly pinch.

    >Flip through and examine the notepad

You flip through the notepad like you're trying to make an animation. However, the pages are blank. It's almost as if this notebook is only here to explain how you're remembering any numbers and codes you come across.

...Nah, that would be ridiculous. Even if that were the case, you don't have any writing implements.

    >Look under the couch

You bend down and look under the couch. It's dusty. At first you don't see anything other than dust, then you spot a ball of fabric. Fishing it out, you discover... another shirt. Great.

  • >Lift up couch cushions

You try to. Unfortunately the segments are attached to the couch. You search the edges, wary of running your hands into sharp staples or whatever lies in couches, but you don't find anything.

    You look DAMN fine!

    >Knock on walls and listen for hollow areas?

You make your way around the room. The walls all sound above board, apart from how there are still no windows.

    >Search the fireplace
The grand brick fireplace is disappointingly missing firewood. And matches. Ashes, though, it has in spades.

Set in the mantelpiece are four candles, each sat in a hole drilled into the woodwork. Someone must have changed their mind halfway, because there are two additional holes to the far left and right of them. The candles are of different heights.

Underneath the mantelpiece are six hooks. You assume these are for stockings and not something more… unpleasant. The leftmost hook is crooked.

As you look into the fireplace you look up and notice something underneath the mantelpiece, beside all the hooks. It looks like someone took a knife to the underside and scrawled "ᗉSCENDING."

    >Observe the buzzing sound
You listen closely. The buzzing is intermittent and sounds like it's coming from the the east wall, in the room beyond the door. You have to press your ear to the wall to make it out clearly. Bzt bzt bzzzt! it goes. It sounds like an alarm clock.

    >Examine the door.
It's made out of wood, just like the rest of the building. From the looks of it, the door opens inwards. The hinges must be on the other side of it. You don't see a lock.

    >Attempt to open the door.
Since there's no lock, surely you can just open it!

    ....

    The doorknob doesn't budge.

At least you checked; it would have been embarrassing if it was unlocked the whole time.

There is no time limit on this. I'm adding a "Move Counter" for my own benefit and to better separate Commands from Results.

Edit: Fixed "ᗉ," removed "<" note. Thanks, Tau!
