I've gotten the idea from some of our newer members that the forum can still be complicated and intimidating to new members, so tonight I played around with the front page forum page (locally through my browser), with an eye on making things simpler. This is what I came up with:

My thinking was that the number of topics/posts was probably the least important information displayed for each forum, yet its area was (is) one of the largest on each row, displayed in large font almost as large as the forum title. I dramatically reduced the size of it and put it under the title so that it's still there but doesn't scream for attention. I then added a brief description of each forum after the title so new members can quickly see what each forum is for, but if that's enough, all the extra space saved from moving the forum stats allows for a longer description too. As a bonus, having the large brief description means that we can go back to having less straightforward forum titles.

Usually for something this minor I would just implement it, but it seems like every time I make changes to the front forum page there's people who don't like it, so I thought I'd post it here for comment first.

As a mockup this looks nice.

Gatekeep's Post should probably also have Introductions in its subtitle as well though...
