Story

Elena dreamt back to the night, 12 years ago, when her destiny had been altered forever. She thrashed in her sleep as she remembered her father's screams, along with the blood-curdling sound of her brother and sister being torn apart. She remembered, too, how it had ended, with Van Helsing standing ready to shield her from the Devil's top lieutenant. And then, how count Dracula had fled before her words. The words themselves were lost to time. Sometimes, she still wondered whether she had said anything at all.

But now, as then, it was no time to sleep, for dawn was softly lighting her tent, and now was the time to fulfil her destiny: to slay Dracula and put an end to his plan to summon Satan into their world. Her eyes slowly opened, and she relished in the smell of wild beans and mushrooms, potatoes and fresh meat wafting from Van Helsing's campfire.

Steadily, she forced herself into a seated position in her bedroll. Oddly, she felt no fear or nervousness as she pulled herself to her feet and opened her tent covers. In her veins flowed the holy protection of God Himself. No vampire could ever hope to harm her.

Van Helsing smiled grimly as she approached him by the fire. "My, my, miss. What brings a lovely young lady such as yourself to a miserable old man such as me?" He offered her a plate, still steaming. Autumn had settled in darkly in this part of the world, and they would need all the energy they could get, for where they were headed they would need to have their wits about them.

Elena gladly accepted, flashing that juvenile smile that was reserved only for him. A woman she may have become, but to him, she would always remain the child that had once saved his life, as he had saved hers. "Thank you, and clearly," she paused as she bit into a particularly tough piece of meat, "ith's the smell, o' course." Van Helsing chuckled as she tried to speak with her mouth full.

They watched the fire as they ate, each in their own silence. They knew what the prophecy said: When potatoes wither in the South Lands, the time of the end will descend. Holy men with unholy motives will convene, and he who wears the reflexion of another will turn the tide against the demons, or else, become their master. The maiden who tamed the beast will decide all.

Neither fully knew what it meant, but they knew they were where they needed to be, for the Potato Pope had personally sent Van Helsing this very message, along with the prophecy, and told him that by the time he made it to Rome, he would already be dead and that Dracula would be at the centre of it all. This had been what she trained for, for the better part of 12 years, and failure would not be an option.

They hurriedly packed up their camp and proceeded to enter the city, heading straight for the Vatican. Some hours later, as they neared its majestic obelisk and the day began burning bright around them, they saw the black smoke emanating from the sistine chapel, and had their worst fears confirmed for them.

As they snuck their way into the cathedral, they would hear ominous rumours. The pope had been found dead in his study. He was laid on a table. All around him were black candles. On his chest was an upside-down pentagram with a circle drawn around it, and a small, black candle on each of its points. He had been decapitated, and his blood had been used to draw the pentagram. His head had been found on a make-shift altar, with a tomato placed in his mouth.

And nearby, a dead cultist in black robes had been found with all his blood sucked out of his body, with two little fang marks on his throat.

1. You may reveal your role, as the roles were randomly assigned to people from either the Tomatoist faction, or the Potatoist faction, meaning your roles have no bearing on your alignment. This means that the scum faction (the Tomatoists) could well have control over some of the really important roles for the town faction (the Potatoists).

2. You may abstain, but if too many people do so, then the Tomatoists get an extra kill that night phase. The total number of abstentions allowed will never be known to the players, only by the host, and will change each round. In other words, you abstain at your own risk.

3. Extraordinary play will be rewarded. If the scum faction manages to shoot an important target during the night phases, or stay undetected for three phases, they will gain 1 night of protection from any night action performed on them, except for a scan. The same applies to the other faction and roles: if a town vigilante can kill a scum, then said vigilante can gain immunity from being voted off during the day. I wanted to make these rewards helpful, but not game-breaking.

4. Once you are dead, you may not post anything more than a farewell post, and you may not alter the outcome of the game in any way with your post, as this is really just a grace to allow you to say goodbye.

5. Everyone in this game is a power role. It is therefore pointless to try and exploit the Who's Online meta game.

6. All standard rules apply, and anything that I deem to go against the spirit of the game will be penalised at my sole discretion.

7. The first phase will last for 72 hours, upon which we will transition into a 24-hour night phase, and all subsequent day phases will be 48 hours. Night phases will remain 24 hours.

8. Hammering is in effect. In other words, if a player has received the majority of the vote, then that player is instantly lynched, and the round ends. To put it mathematically: In a game with 17 players, if one player gets 9 votes to lynch them, that player is instantly lynched. This will be difficult for me to enforce at all hours of the day, so I will charge you all to use the honour system and stop posting even if I am not here to enforce this rule by locking the thread. All communication must also cease with the lynched individual, if they happen to be in any group PM attached to this game.

Watcher: Learns who visited the target, but not what actions they did

Alignment Cop: Learns whether the target is town or mafia, but not their role

Vigilante: Kills the target

Doctor: Protects the target from kills on that night only (can self-protect)

Tracker: Learns who the target visited, but not what actions they did

Roleblocker: Prevents the target from using their action on that night only

Jailkeeper: Performs both a Doctor and Roleblocker action on the target, both protecting and blocking them (cannot self-protect)

Role Cop: Learns the role of the target, but not whether they are town or mafia

Jack of All Trades: Can use one of their abilities per night without repeats

Voyeur: Learns what type of actions were performed on the target, but not who did them

Macho: The player cannot be protected from kills

Strongman: Kills performed with Strongman cannot be stopped in any way (serves no purpose if the player is town)

Ninja: Night actions performed on the night that Ninja is used are invisible to investigative roles (Trackers, Watchers, and Voyeurs)

Question about the modifiers.  Are the modifiers automatically applied if the role can only use their ability once or is it optional to have the modifier in effect while using the ability?

You can choose when you want to use it.

That's a good question. We never got that far in the Mafia Universe game. I think what you suggested would be good. I think we'll be close to MYLO territory by then, though.
