  • My initial thought is to go with the diversifying with offices option since they take a turn to build and could help prevent instability in certain regions.
For the agents, I think we should deploy them evenly.
And, yeah, I think we should levy a Tobin Tax on the more developed regions.

  • I kept the clock ticking a bit longer than usual to see if anyone else wanted to participate over the weekend, and since the first turn is kinda confusing and broad. It will be a bit simpler and slower from here on, with us mainly reacting to stuff, just there isn't anything to react to at first. :))

I'd never even heard of the game until you made this topic. :P

Out of curiosity, are there regions where making a decision now would be less impactful? If we choose not to do a tax, maybe we can wait and do them later. I'm not sure on the tax...maybe now would be a good time for some other players to give their input.

Hey Moot, didn't want too much of a back and forth on the intricacies which is why I didn't respond again earlier. Generally though with the projects it's better to do stuff sooner rather than later, the only things that affect roll-out really are how much the region is in favor of environmentalism which will speed up some of them (the way to raise that is awareness campaigns); and technology which will come up as it does. The tax is always hated by the public though, so it's usually best to just use it when you need to.

All of that is a bit too specific for here though, :P which is why I held off, I am happy to answer any of these questions, but I rather just see how people roll with stuff based on their intuition and thoughts on the real world and environmentalism: since the game is remarkably accommodating to that stuff. :-[

I like nuclear, not sure about the nuances of this game though.

Same goes for Tau's comment here, my point is to try to translate whatever you guys want to do into the nuances of the video game, that way you don't need all the boring data and charts the game throws out, but still sorta get the feeling of changing "the world". Don't worry about winning or losing, mainly think of what you would do in the situation, what would you do if given the opportunity to wield absolute power and save(or destroy) the world.

Maybe it's my bad for providing so much information on the intricacies, and I should have kept it more vague, but early on I wanted to let everyone know what the options are, I'll format it much less open ended from here on out.

    Separate Update incoming shortly ^-^

Everyone supported spreading our agents across all the regions.
Overall it seems the majority wanted to deploy projects, with a smaller leaning to nuclear, so I committed primarily to that.
To afford this we started tobin taxes in the main commercially developed regions (North America, Europe and Oceania).
Additionally we deployed a technology office in North America.

    The year is now 2025.
The average temperature is 1.1 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

    General Data Update

There's good news and bad news... I'll give you the good stuff first:
-Advanced Drilling technologies, this allows increased expansion of geothermal power and increasing the reachable reserves of oil and gas.
-The Nuclear subsidies are proving quite successful so far, the vast majority of countries have begun many new build constructions, but the focus is mainly to support new increasing power demand and not replacing existing power plants.

The bad news is going to take a while, so brace yourself:
    - There are austerity protests in taxed regions and business leaders have requested an end to the tax fearing permanent damage to local economies.
    - GEO officials were attacked in North Africa, while there were no casualties our vehicles were set alight and our buildings were damaged, the lead agent there has requested we send security assistance.
-Reports indicate that pacific storms hit China, India and South Asia badly, the current estimated death toll is 3 million, regional governments and media bodies have put most of the blame for the extent of the damage on GEO, saying that storm and flood defenses could have prevented this.
-Additionally the government of China has announced that smog and air pollution there has reached record levels, and they are requesting additional medical aid teams to deal with the rising cases of respiratory conditions.

    Next Actions

So that was a really unlucky set of RNG outcomes there, big storms like that normally take a few turns to hit, and the combination of that stuff in China has really damaged support for GEO, and our budget has dropped a little, but it's not too bad overall.

    Here are my suggestions:
We only have enough money to go all in on one of these, but feel free to try and mix and match or come up with your own ideas.

    Suggestion 1: Offices everywhere
    - We should build environmental and welfare offices in the regions affected by the big storm, not only can the stuff from them protect against future hits, it will make them a bit happier with us
    - The nuclear rollout is going well but I think setting up energy offices in the largest polluting regions and banning coal might be worth the idea, that will encourage more development into other energy sources.
    - Finally we should consider building a political office and sending troops to North Africa, if attacks on our agents continue we could lose them there, and all the money we invested in the region would be lost with them.

Suggestion 2: Carbon Caps and Land Preservation:
-Comparing the data over the last 5 years emissions rose significantly, a lot of this is coming from China and the Developed world, cap and trade schemes will begin a process of stabilizing this, it won't reduce emissions immediately but it could hold off further increases.
-Land Preservation will stop the massive deforestation ongoing in Rainforest regions and the developing world, this will prevent escalating environmental damage from spiraling out of control in the near future.
-Overall both of these will reduce the demand for fossil fuels and might increase the effectiveness of our nuclear rollouts.

    Suggestion 3: Headquarters
-We can now found GEO headquarters, this would be a huge project costing $100 on it's own, but it would allow us to enact global bans on things, develop a space program, and influence the environmental outlook on the whole world, it's an investment but it could pay off.
-Also since this takes a big bite out the budget, the most cost effective thing to do is; in all the regions currently rolling out nuclear also start committing to renewables, this effectively doubles the pressure to adapt less polluting power sources

As always ask any questions and provide any suggestions ^-^

$749 specifically, with the taxes, but a bunch of that is tied up in all the roll outs.
We actually have an agent everywhere, NA in the image is uncoloured because we built the tech office there and Japan's is uncoloured cause I checked up on it. That's my bad. :P regions we don't have agents in don't show up there at all.

  • Ok, I'm going to again suggest we build offices. I've put suggestions for each office type (as well as specific regions in parentheses), though I got my info from a FotW wiki, so the region stats could be different than our scenario. And if we need more money for something, I'd be OK with Tobin taxing Japan (if it's well developed like the wiki says).

Political Offices: Regions most susceptible to instability. (N. Africa, Mid East, S. Africa)

Welfare Offices: Regions that are less developed. (China, S. Asia, India, Mid East, N. Africa, S. Africa, L. America, Russia)

Environmental Offices: Regions more susceptible to natural disasters and shortages. (China, S. Asia, India, Mid East, N. Africa, S. Africa)

Energy Offices: Regions that are big polluters. (China, N. America, Europe, L. America)

  • Through intense study of the winds and the sea, I propose that we 1d6=1 ...Follow Gerrick's lead! By that, I mean we should focus on 1d6=4 ...Energy Offices: Regions that are big polluters. (China, N. America, Europe, L. America), if there needs to be a specific focus.

You really did very well with this Gerrick, you didn't have to do all that and go to the wiki and come up with a big outline like this. It's awesome, thank you. ^-^ I'll be putting it into effect right away, just want to let everyone know that all this is great, but not necessary to participate.

Also, thanks Elbbsas for somehow finding away to decide things about this stuff based on dice-rolls, that's pretty impressive :))

  • Thanks for the responses. :)

    Previous Actions
With what I was given the actions I took were:
    -Maintaining the Nuclear Rollout
-Maintaining the Tobin taxes in N America, Europe, Oceania and now Japan
    -Doing what Gerrick said to the letter;
-Deploying political, welfare, environmental, energy and technology offices in target regions, allowing us to
           preform significantly more actions.

    Results and Events
The year is: 2030, warming from pre-industrial levels is:1.15 degrees Celsius

    Positive Developments:
-The invention of Smartgrids has been finalized in North America
-Global GDP has increased, leading to a higher effective budget for our operations

    Negative Developments:
-Current global uranium production does not supply the new demand, while production will increase steadily currently the full capacity of constructed nuclear generation won't be used.
-North Africa has continued to destabilize hindering out operations, at one particular incident local security forces abandoned our offices, leaving our agents
-Activists in India have demanded more action in the region, there is extreme stress on the water supply, overcrowded residential areas and ever worsening pollution.

    Data Overview

    Regions:
North America - Energy Office, Tech Office
Latin America - Welfare Office, Energy Office
Europe - Energy Office, Tech Office
Northern Africa - Political Office, Welfare Office, Environmental Office
Southern Africa - Political Office, Welfare Office, Environmental Office
    Russia - Welfare Office
Middle East - Political Office, Welfare Office, Environmental Office
India - Welfare Office, Environmental Office
China - Welfare Office, Environmental Office, Energy Office
South Asia -  Welfare Office, Environmental Office
    Oceania - Tech Office
    Japan -  Tech Office

    Suggested Actions

Our budget is $1094, with $400 of that coming from already implemented Tobin taxes and $150 being spent in office and agent maintenance, there area also all the continuing cards which have already had their costs deducted. With this much money I'd recommend repealing the previous Tobin Taxes.
So the nuclear rollout has been hindered recently with the uranium shortages, that isn't a super big deal, the supply is only short about 0.5% globally, which isn't having a big impact. Although if we want to we can motivate increasing production in regions with an energy office.
A really great thing to do would be to start running awareness campaigns in every region that can (with a welfare office), this can greatly increase support for the organisation.

To cover quickly again what the new offices can do:
Welfare Offices also allow us to run education and medical campaigns which really boosts support.
Environmental Offices can deploy storm and drought defenses this also greatly increases our support and reminds countries that we are doing our job.
The Tech offices can quickly spread new inventions to parts of the world where it could take decades to reach otherwise.
Energy offices allow us to incentivise or disincentivise any resources production/use.
The political offices allow us to send security forces or fund black-ops.

Also all of those initial project actions are still available, feel free to suggest anything small or large.

So I decided to drop the multiple numbered suggestions, since no one seemed to like them. :P Also I've been a bit anal and haven't removed the taxes or rollouts cause no one told me to >:D sorry, just think that works a bit better... I've never had this much money in fotw, so this should be interesting, honestly this is a pretty fantastic start, well done guys. Good luck with this next turn.

    HANNAH NO
NOW MY DICE ROLLS WILL BE MARGINALLY INCONVENIENCED BECAUSE I HAVE TO MANUALLY DO IT!!! AHHH DECISION PARALYSIS AHHH! =P

In all seriousness, 1d6=6 I think we should make use of our welfare offices to run some awareness campaigns. How convenient, both North Africa and India have welfare offices. Going back to those suggestions earlier, studies show that 1d6=2 working on Carbon Caps and Land Preservation is a good idea. I have no idea if that's too much to do at once, but the dice never lie.

  • Here are my suggestions listed in order (so keep going down the list until out of money):

    Repeal the taxes, by god!
    Awareness campaigns
    Cap and trade schemes
    Land protections
Commit to renewables if there's any money left

By the way, I also liked the numbered suggestions. :D
