The Lore and Peoples of Mithra
    Magic
Magic: Magic in the world of Mithra is a diverse mostly considered natural force found in every living thing. The source of magic in a person is the soul and it can be considered another muscle of sorts, as such every person makes use of magic in some form throughout their lives. Visible use of magic however is restricted to those who spend their lives’ strengthening the soul. Most humans only live long enough to master one field of magic, and as such become more reliant on the use of magical items which store magical energy from generation to generation. Dwarves are a step up from humans in magical capability due to their longer lifespans, able to make use upwards of three fields of magic proficient at maximum. At the top of the naturally humanoid races in magical capability are the elves who dominate the study of magic with their two millenia long lifespans.

Being found naturally in the environment, people can develop affinities for different fields of magic by way of their homeland. As an example coastal peoples will be more inclined towards water magic, those who live in the forests will be more inclined towards wood or plant magic etc. Repetition can also form magical bonds, even in the most mundane of tasks. An old washerwoman might magically be able to get rid of even the toughest of stains, and someone with a silver-tongue might actually have magically honed their skills. Some lands also affect how magic is cast. Only the Bothnian’s can sing their magic into being, though the skill is limited to their bards who almost never leave their land since they lose their abilities outside of it. Any Sarvanist, though those whose family has ties to the land they live in experience it much more powerfully, can seemingly will the land itself to their defense when invaded, opening up holes in the land to devour anyone who dare step in it with ill-intent. They lose such mind-boggling power when they leave their home country however.
    The Races of Mithra
    Humans
Humans: Your standard, run of the mill humans, just like us.
    Subcategories
Haragladians: One of a number of human-elf hybrid races in Mithra, Haragladians were originally a semi manufactured race by the ancient Elven Empire of Polletus, however the selective breeding that saw their creation is long past, leaving their race to be primarily the product of natural uninhibited crossbreeding. Traits of the Haragladians include their burgundy colored hair, their silver eyes (A trait passed down from their Polletun ancestors) their near perfect night vision, and their longer than human lifespan ranging to about 250 years barring any unnatural causes of death which are so very common. (View Haragladian culture for more detail)
    Elves
Elves: The elves are a race with a long lifespan and a longer history, one well remembered by those of this race. Once rulers of much of the world, they’ve seen quite the decline in the last millennia, as it turns out the shorter lived races are somewhat terrified of their seemingly immortal rulers, especially when they seem to be liable to such cruelty. The elves are what you’d expect of their name, tall, slender, almost otherworldly and extremely competent in magic given enough time, but unlike humans they have far more variety amongst them and few nations to call their own.

Majilian Elves: The direct descendents of the Ancient Polletun Empire, the Elves of Majilis are a rare and pure breed of elf ruling over their enslaved human populace. Perhaps the “purest” of any elven population, they are the most distinctly elven of elves. Their population is diverse in both the colour of their skin, hair and eyes, with only the most outlandish or specific colours off limits. While the colour of their skin respects the normal laws of the world, their eye and hair colours are almost like a game of chance, with seemingly no consistency between parent and child.

Galliforian Elves: Among the descendents of Polletus, The Elves of the Frozen Realm of Galifor are well known for their hardiness, generally shorter lifespan (By elven standards) and their smiths who forge the legendary and iconic Galiforian steel that gives off a black hue.

Bothnian and Kanbian Elves: The Bothnian elves are the most tragic of all the elven races, if you’re an elf anyway. Their entire kind, descended from the Galiforians, were the inhabitants of regions conquered by the marauding Bothnians, who took their cities, settled the land, and enslaved them, making them no more than floor washers and prostitutes. Their luckier brothers, the Kanbian elves, were taken over by the Bothnians brother nation, Kanbi. While still not in control of their own nation, the elves of Kanbi live side by side with their Kanbian counterparts, though there are strict laws in place forbidding interbreeding, leaving the Kanbian elves and Kanbian humans mostly free of each other’s influence in that respect. Physically they are shorter than other elves, in particular Bothnian elves, mostly due to malnutrition, though also as an adaptation to the harsh northern climate. Their skin is fairer than other elves and is almost porcelain white in some cases.

Juru Elves: Among the more diluted bloodlines of the Elves, the Elves who dwell in the Hidden Kingdom of Juru are fairly run of the mill elves that share the complexion and language of their human Juru counterparts. There is often little to distinguish between them except their above normal stature, pointed ears and slightly darker complexion from the dusky Juru skin tones.

Medeans: The people of the oppressed capital of magic in the west, the Medeans are an elf-blood dominant hybrid race that inhabit the land of Medeas, which is currently a province in the Burjionese Empire, a land known for its rather strict control over the use of magic through the Church of Siglaeism, a religion that Burjion’s denomination of holds a belief that elves are demons, making the Medeans a primarily hunted race in their own land.

Azumans: The Azumans are questionably elves, questionably humans, certainly Azumans. It is said that any elf who lays eyes on them would call them human, any human elf, and any dwarf would simply give up. Despite not being truly of either race though, their magical abilities harken back to their elven blood, though they are all in tune with nature magic. Living in great tree houses in one of the most magically blessed lands in all of Mithra, the very land itself seems to have changed them. They stand in height between elves and men, with the same being said to build, distinct features blending together beyond recognition. It is their eyes, as green as the leaves of the forest they live in that gives them away.

    Dwarves

Dwarves: The dwarves, much like the elves, harken back to Mithra’s older days where humans didn’t have quite so much dominance, but unlike the elves are almost gone from the world. Only two distinct groups of them yet live, with their only commonality being that they live in the tunnels their ancestors dug out for them. They are much like expected, short, stout and hairy, with booming voices and a liver the size of a young dwarven child. Their hair and eyes generally come in darker colours, while their skin tones vary depending on where they’re from.

Kalad-Dun Dwarves: The Kalad-Dun are the smaller of the two dwarven groups, living in the harsh desert that gives them their name, in small, self sufficient communities, structures ranging from rather large pyramids carved into the mountains to squat holes in the ground containing no more than a few ragged families and whatever keeps them alives. Unsurprisingly being the only thing in the vast desert has made a few of their towns popular with outsiders looking to trade across it, but most Kalad-Dun dwarves live insular lives with the few families that inhabit their homes. Despite this though they don’t seem to be going away anytime soon. Appearance wise Kalad-Dun dwarves will generally look similar to the people in their community, and this has allowed otherwise recessive traits in dwarves to come forth, with surprisingly colourful hair, not to mention a variety of skin tones and eye colours.

Rhian Dwarves: The Rhian dwarves are those native to Rhiannon, the massive sprawling underground metropolis that spans multiple nations underground. Once controlling a large empire in Galindia, they suddenly retreated to their city having seen the Empire of Polletus fall to human rebels. Despite having become more insular in recent centuries, they have continued making some of the most beautiful metal crafts in all of Mithra, their craftsdwarfship having not falter in beauty or demand. Their fame doesn’t mean they’re seen very often outside their mountain home however, though young dwarves are liable to run off to see the great wide world and a few expatriates live in other places. Their very existence in the greater world is mostly maintained by Thorndainian traders, the only people besides themselves allowed in their halls. Appearance wise they’re much of what you would expect of dwarves, though some variety is maintained because unlike any other dwarven community there is enough individuals to support noticeable regional differences between sections of the vast cavern city.
    Dragons
Dragons: Dragons are a race small in number but massive in impact. Many among themselves consider themselves to be the oldest race in the world, and in memory they no doubt are, for no dragon has ever fallen to old age. Innately magical in a way that transcends the connection their humanoid counterparts share to the world, they possess many magical skills. All dragons can change at will into a humanoid form that generally reflects the humanoids they have been around. This form can be somewhat adjusted by juvenile dragons, but older ones are locked into whatever they have. When they are in their dragon form they have short range telepathic powers to communicate, though language is still a barrier and it’s uncomfortable enough for the receiver that most simply choose to speak in their humanoid form if they can help it. Their humanoid form also functions as something of a second life for a dragon, as while their wounds will stay on whatever form they are wounded in, their other form will remain unharmed. This has left some dragons without humanoid or dragon forms because they are damaged beyond repair but have clung on to life long enough that the dragon was able to switch.  Appearance wise they come in all colours of the rainbow, though they will generally be of a similar colour to one of their parents. If one was to pick a real-world dragon counterpart it would certainly be western dragons.

Manatian Dragons: The Sons and daughters of Zykara, the Dragons of Manat are much like all others who inhabit the Manatian peninsula, Sarvanists. A religion born of an ancient strife, the Sarvanist Dragons are the most fanatical of Sarvanists, fighting on the frontlines to cleanse the world of the demons who possess most of Mithra’s populace. What makes Sarvanist Dragons and their arch enemy kin the Jeddites unique is their bond with humanoid races. The Sarvanist Dragons in particular must bond with a humanoid to survive, those few that cannot find a partner often die for many given reasons though the true cause has never been confirmed. Manatian dragons suffer from an unfortunately short lifespan due to their never-ending defense of their homeland and struggle to see the world freed of demons, meaning they are often small in size and do not possess the wisdom of their older counterparts.

Jeddite Dragons: The Sons and Daughters of Jeddiam, Jeddite Dragons are the second most populous group of dragons, dwelling on the Isle of Ceske their race are the sworn enemies of the Sarvanists. Much like two sides of the same coin, the Jeddite dragons share much in common with the Manatian’s and are responsible for the Sarvanists isolation from the rest of the world. Unlike Manat’s dragons however, they can live without a bonded humanoid, though many
go insane. They suffer from the same longevity issues that plague Manatian dragons, taking about as much as they give, though perhaps due to sheer luck there are a few more older dragons then are found in Manat.

Juru Dragons: The Juru dragons are a small group, but not without their impact. They are known for their wisdom and knowledge, being followers of the Librarian of Juru, the ancient dragon who keeps the greatest library in the world. They are often sought out by people in search of answers.

“Free”/Other Dragons: Dragons, being the mostly undisputed lords of the skies often don’t care much for the borders those on the ground set and often ignore them and those who care about them all together, living lives free of their interference on isolated mountains or in the hearts of deserts. One never knows who might stumble into them or how they’ll react. These dragons will often end up with the humanoid form of the first one they stumble onto, occasionally creating a near perfect copy of the person they encounter.
    Mendier
    Mendier

Hyrrokin: Children of the Wolves, Hyrrokin is an overarching term for Mendier races of the half-human half-canine variety, ranging from the Dire Wolves of Bothnia, to the Anuban Dingos of Pr-Akash.

Felesons: Children of the Cats, Feleson is an overarching term for Feline related Mendier

Nagos: Children of the Serpents, half human half snake Mendier

While not playable I must mention the Lepesons: Children of the Rabbit, the Lepesons are a tragic almost exclusively enslaved race that breed like rabbits and have the maximum human maturity of a ten year old.
    Cultures
    Cultures:

A quick note here: You will receive a more in depth description of your culture once you’ve picked it (You can even ask me for it before making your bio) but I thought it would be better for everyone to start with an outsider's perspective of the culture and maybe get to learn more from their fellow characters! Or just be a xenophobic asshole if you wish :P These are just supposed to be brief overviews of the general worldview of a culture, you can subvert them as you wish. Also we haven’t included two continents and we’ve only included playable cultures for the sake of time, as this is already long enough!
    Cultures of Al-Bukana
    Al-Bukanans

Pr-Akashi: The people of Pr-Akashi are nothing if not a big fan of rituals. There are expected rituals to waking up, going to sleep and praying. There are also expected rituals to making certain meals, because the Pr-Akashi believe that keeping a structured and ordered life will keep the gods happy, it is for this very reason that your characters are in the situation they are in!

Himyar: The Himyar are a varied people, some live in cities, others in Al-Bukana’s harsh mountains or vast deserts. It is their tribal society and respect for it that makes them one people. No Himyar would ever deny a person their rightful blood due or disrespected the sacred laws of a haram, where no weapons are allowed and no blood is to be shed.

Jari: The people of the Jari river are a varied, bickering bunch to the point where argumentativeness is almost a virtue. No one should ever give up a point where they are right, unless they are proven wrong!

Barash: The Barash are another large group, spanning the now broken so called empire of the “Jasilis” the insulting term their Majilisian overlords use for them in their land. They also are the majority culture in the Oasis states and the Kingdom of Ubanal and are a generally loyal and dedicated people to those that are close to them. They can also be great mercenaries, for the right price.

Majilisians: Proud, vain, arrogant, what other terms are suitable for the elves of Majilis? Having recently gained the upper hand against the human kingdoms they border, perhaps they have the right idea.

Yabani: The Yabani live in the mountains south of the Majilisians new empire and have loosely tied themselves to it for the time being. These people are warlike, but mostly against each other and they have a huge appreciation for fine craftsmanship. They hold their spider tamers almost sacred in status, and they alone hold the secrets to the fantastically light, strong, and beautiful silk armours they produce.

Dalgunian: The Dalgunians would not be a people were it not for politics. An obstenibally Barash people, they are the only people in the world who trade with Manat, despite the risks. This has made them rich, as the goods Manat produces can often not be found anywhere else in the world, in particular its magical items. On the other hand they are targets for anyone who feels like allying themselves with the Jeddites and their ships have been sunk in ports as far away as Kemuanac.

Uban: The Uban are somewhat distinct from the rest of the Barash, holding the only large and truly independent state of their people. They hold honesty in high regard and view lying as a crime, though plenty of deception goes on nonetheless.

Sarvan: If one was to ask whether Sarvan refers to the people or the religion, the answer would be yes, because they are one. Fanatical in purging the world of demons, they’ve killed few but “converted” many, leaving a people with an appearance as diverse as those who live in the world, though they are liable to have red eyes.

Jeddite: The Jeddites are the Sarvanists intractable enemies, seen by many as a noble organization committed to fighting evil from their island home, and weird fanatics by others. Unsurprisingly endless war takes a toll on population, but they also do not recognize marriage since the only true life beyond is between a person and a dragon in their opinion and sex is open and free. This freeness applies to many aspects of their lives, as their homes are open and for their own people so are their wallets. They are extremely wary of outsiders, though anyone who has gained the trust of a dragon is welcome and all dragons are shown respect.

Kalad-Dunian: If you’ve met a Kalad-Dunian you should consider yourself honoured in their opinion, for they are a venerable race who aren’t liable to leave the great homes their forefathers built. Even if that home isn’t much more than a hole in the ground where they grow mushrooms to gnaw on.
    Cultures of Galindia
    Galdinians:

Ignore the random location names, they were part of the map generator
Haragladians: A traditionally militaristic and honorbound culture living in the north of what is now the Eclenian Empire, this culture is not limited to native Haragladians but also their more human counterparts who live alongside them in the mountains and highlands they call home.

Eclenians: A descendant offshoot of Haragladia, the Eclenians are a highly respectful and equally respected culture who reside in the southeastern corner of Galindia. A publically reserved and privately passionate people, Eclenians pride themselves on being reliable to their friends and enemies alike. Their most well known physical trait is their signature dark blue eyes.

Burjionese: Within their own borders the people of Burjion are among the most peaceful and kind folk you can come across, with a love of earth and things that grow. They are also amongst the most religiously fanatical cultures in the world making even Sarvanists look tolerant by comparison. Should you be any form of Infidel, the average Burjionese will look down upon you as being the lowest of the low barely worthy of the air you breathe, and Taurok forbid you are a heretic, then you would be wise to raise your guard and pray to your heathen gods for mercy, for the only mercy Taurok will give you is Holy Fire .

Roncaleans: If there is Business to be had, then a Roncalean can be found no further than a stone’s throw away. Originally the term could be used to describe the ethnic group found on the Isle of Roncalas, however today it is so diverse that it is by now a byword for merchant. In fact the most high praise you can give to a merchant is to refer to them as a Roncal.

Bothnians: Much like the Roncaleans, the Bothnians can be summed up in one saying. If there is blood to be spilled, a Bothnian will be there. The Bothnians are the peak of warrior culture from the ground up, the Bothnian culture and society is built upon the premise of blood being spilled. All in service of their God Ukonusko the World Sunderer, whom every Bothnian warrior has the pleasure of entertaining with the most perfect dance of battle, and filling his chalice with the most thirst quenching drink of blood. This has left the Bothnian state almost entirely controlled by women, with Bothnian slave traders in particular known for terrifying their counterparts in cultures that would prefer to see women left out of such exchanges.

Kanbians: While the Kanbians have much of the appreciation of the Bothnians for blood, they are not obsessed with it. Just because men are best as warriors doesn’t mean all men must be warriors. They also include elves among their numbers as more than just slaves, which sets them apart from the Bothnians systemic slavery of them. They are in many ways simply more moderate Bothnians. Just don’t tell them that yourself.

Soerians: In the best possible definition the term Soerian refers to a person from the Soerian Subcontinent of Galindia. However to refer to someone from Soeria as a Soerian is a blatant if by now expected admission of ignorance. Soeria is one of the most divided lands in all of Mithra, home to a plethora of ethnic groups and cultures that are both insulted and proud to be called Soerian. The best possible analogy I can make about the Soerians is this. Soeria is like water, if you pass through gently you will find little resistance to your visit, but if you enact violence upon it, it becomes harder than stone. It is for this reason that the term Soerian is a most paradoxical one to use.

Medeans: The oppressed masters of magic in the west. The Medeans are best defined by two things, their extremely talented use of magic, and their near constant state of being a conquered people with varying levels of rights and autonomy. At present, the Medean homeland is controlled by the Burjionese Empire who despise both Elves who make up the majority of the Medean ethnic group, and magic that is unsanctioned by their religion. This particularly cruel overlord has led many Medeans to become nomadic fleeing their homeland and scattering across the world as wandering bands of gypsies.

Rhian: The last remnant of the once great Dominion of Rhiannon, the Fortress Kingdom of Rhiannon, is home to the Rhian Dwarves an extremely reclusive people who trade only with their completely engulfing neighbor and by now purely self-proclaimed vassal Thorndain. These people are well known for their eccentricity and are liable to flights of fancy.

Thorndainians: The Thorndainians are a proud people, with a rich history of sucking up to Rhiannon and hoping for the best. In all seriousness though you will struggle to find better friends to have then in a Thorndainian, just don’t get on their bad sides. They have a long memory for slights and you’d be surprised at how many ways there are to slight them.

Gremoraens: One of the two primary cultures of the so-called “Lake Sisters” cultural group, the Gremoraens are a people known for their deadly serious nature, and extreme work ethic, but also for their jubilant celebrations of holidays and festivals many of which are unique to their land, including their most famed harvest festival that sees families come together to celebrate the year’s hard work and the spirits of family and friends who have passed on.

Silestrians: The younger and often regarded as softer of the Lake Sisters, The Principality of Silestria is surrounded on every side by significantly larger kingdoms that could with some effort easily conquer the lakeside land. However, barring some raiding by the Eystarins to the west, and the occasional land claim by the Burjionese to the south, the Silestrians have been left unharmed by its neighbors. This is in no small part due to Silestria’s incredibly shrewd diplomats, who much like the rest of the people build their lives on peace and kindness. It is because of this that the typically hostile Eystarins are close allies and friends to the Silestrians who happily let the Eystarins’ mounts graze on Silestrian grass. And the Burjionese? Well it’s somewhat hard to invade a Principality that’s surrounded by large, powerful friends.

Eystarins: The faithful servants and guardians of horses. The Eystarins are a generally nomadic people who live on the backs of their sacred mounts.

  • Name: Saerien
    Age: 50
    Gender: Male(neutered)
    Race: Draconian
    Cultural background: Uban
Bio: A rugged warrior, Saerien has long been pitted against tyranny, and has many skills that allow him to actually do something about it.  At 50, Saerien is still young among Draconians, which are known to live to 2000.  He also has some minor martial magic, but prefers the cold steel of his twin long swords to magic.  Saerien is a Mercenary.

I am unsure what you mean by Draconic or Draconian, this world has Dragons, who are immortal as long as they aren't killed by other means. Please read that section and take it into account in your bio.

    Name: Athano
    Age: 730
    Sex: Male
    Race: Elf
    Cultural Background: Galiforian
Bio: Once a distinguished member of the most elite order of knights in Galifor, The Wardens of the Dark Angel. Athano has been cast out from the order and his homeland for an unspeakable crime. Having lost his purpose in life Athano has wandered the world aimlessly for decades in his full suit of Galiforian steel armor, earning him monikers like the Black Knight, and the Lost Reaper.

    Accepted, how surprising :P

    Name: Dartai
    Age: 18
    Sex: Male
    Race: Human
    Cultural Background: Eystarin

Bio: Dartai is truly a champion of his people's sacred duty. He never has faltered in his love of the equine wonders that have filled his life. Even at his relatively young age, he believes it to be his duty to connect with the horses and perfect his skills on horseback. He rides all over the world, connecting with the horses of the land. With bow and lance in hand, Dartai tries and spread this love wherever he goes. He makes a good companion, and a trustworthy ally.

Accepted! I knew the Eystarin would catch your eyes.

Can a character have asexual or nonsexual as its sex?

Go right ahead, just give a reason. If the culture you pick would be particularly against it I'll mention it but you do have some leeway in shaping the world given to you.

  • OOC: Sorry if this is bad.  I don't know much about RP.

    Name: Elliot the Cannibal
    Age: 20
    Sex: Female
    Race: Human
    Cultural Background: Uban
Bio: Not surprisingly given her background, Elliot is an honest person.  She also is a generous and studious pacifist who knows some interesting magic.  She was a little girl studying magic when she first realized that she liked the taste of people.  The magic that she realized she had makes her happy every day but it disgusts other people because of how it is applied.  She is able to grow skin to extend her arms and other parts of the body.  She can then cut off her skin and eat it, although she prefers to prepare it first by cooking and adding other foodstuffs to it.  She is famous as a pariah among the Uban because she told them that she could expand her body and eat it which many found disgusting but they didn't try to stop her from continuing the practice.  She has always wanted to be a scholar and was intrigued by the Juru dragons that she has heard legends about.  She would like to find them and join their scholarly retreat.  She has never fought, never learned how, and has never had the will to fight so she is (pretty much) useless in a combat situation even though she always carries a sharp object to use as a knife.  If anyone is hungry she will use her magic to give them some food from herself.  Because of this she has a very high pain tolerance but tends to tire easily because of the inevitable blood loss.  She doesn't necessarily have good health either but she has managed to exist despite her lifestyle.  She is also rather quiet and physically unfit but she can have a sharp wit.  She is known among the Uban as a nice companion despite being rather unpleasant.  She does have family but she left as soon as she could because they didn't like her practices.  She has been a beggar of sorts without doing any actual begging because she has always been able to scavenge what she need or was provided things as a stayaway kind of message.  She has been packing all of her study items and has been getting ready to set out on a journey to meet new people and study the world.
