  • Empowered RP: OOC/Sign-ups

    Intro
For as long as man has been able to tell stories, we dreamed about ourselves. We told tales of people who could move the world with their hands and shake it with their feet, people who could fly in the air like they were gods, people who could control the forces of nature in mysterious ways, and even those who could control the minds of other men. Many names were given to these sorts of people: shamans, demigods, witches and wizards, and what have you. Today, perhaps inspired both by the Übermensch philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche and by the powerful and famous heroes of ancient Greece, we call these characters "superheroes". These characters are guardians of the right and destroyers of the wrong, balanced by their evil counterpart, the super-villain. Obviously, these characters are fictional, spawned by the overactive imaginations of humans and their complex and often absurd cultures.

But what if they weren't fiction? What if there was a strange world like ours where heroes and villains with fantastic powers walked the earth, waging the eternal war of good versus evil? This world is one that explores that possibility. Here, planet Earth is exactly the same as it is today, except for one crucial difference: the existence of superhumans, colloquially known as "The Powered", or "Supers".

In this world, many stories intertwine: the disappearance of a hospitalized superhuman boy with connections to a possible serial killer sparks a media frenzy and a nationwide manhunt in the United States, a young man who sold his soul to the Devil for special powers is being tormented by his own memories while visiting his family in Nicaragua, a Chinese shapeshifter makes a deadly mistake while she helps a stranded motorist and ends up throwing a wrench right into the machinations of a secret global war, and many more.
The powers that shape these stories have origins from the mysterious and supernatural to the scientific and technological, and are as diverse as the people who wield them. You are one of these powered people, in this powered world.

So, what will it be? Will you use your powers to help others and to save the world? Will you use you abilities to exploit and destroy everything around you? The choice is yours, because you are now EMPOWERED.

    SIGN-UP

Name: (Include superhero/villain aliases, if applicable.)
Age and Gender: (Keep in mind that characters can and will die in this RP.)
Appearance: (A brief description or a picture will suffice.)
Personality: (State here everything about who your character is: what they love, what they hate, what makes them happy or sad, how they react to strangers, any instances of psychosis. Basically anything at all that helps to get into your character's head, so to speak.)
    Alignment: (Lawful/Neutral/Chaotic, Good/Neutral/Evil. Optional.)
Biography: (A short biography of your character. Not necessarily required, but highly recommended.)

Powers: So, I scrapped pretty much all of my spiel on the constraints of superpowers and left two simple golden rules:
    1. Your power must be completely approved by either me or Doc personally before you begin the RP. No ifs, ands, or buts. If we don't think your power will be good for the RP, then you can't join until it's fixed. Simple as that.
    2. Prior to any approval, your character's power must be clearly defined in your character app, complete with all accessories and constraints. No random bulletproofing, no random laser eyes, no random nothing. If it's not here, if it's not a necessary "secondary power" (like being fireproof to the flames you generate from your hands), and if it's not something a RL human can do, then it does not and can not apply to anything your character does.

Obey these rules, and everything should be fine.

Welcome to Empowered! This is the place for all character creation and OOC discussion. If you have any questions, this is where you ask them; if you have any ideas, this is where you post them; if you have any verbal abuse to give after your character was killed, this is the place to hurl it, and so on.

Keep in mind that we are doing "story threads" as well: rather than cramming every subplot and piece of character development into one gargantuan and unnavigable thread, separate threads will exist for each story. You can make any thread you like for any story, but please consult either myself or Doc before starting one.

  • Name: Daniel Llewellyn Morris AKA "The Westside Scorcher", often goes by aliases
    Age and Gender: 27, Male
Appearance: A scruffy looking young man with pale skin and sunken, mossy green eyes. He lets his greasy brown hair grow long and ungroomed, much the same as his patchy facial hair. He often wears a trucker cap with a "DETROIT FREIGHT" logo. His clothes are typically just as dirty as the rest of him, though they have reason to be given how he scrapes by with odd jobs requiring a lot of menial labor. He stands about 6 feet tall with a lean physique. He can often be found smoking cigarettes, and keeps a flask in his pocket more often than his wallet.
Personality: During his workday Daniel is a mostly quiet, but occasionally friendly man who simply wants to get his job done. During the night, however, his true nature comes out. He is a sadistic, psychotic pyromaniac who derives extreme, sometimes sexual pleasure from setting things on fire. He has an extreme disdain for Detroit and the people living in it. He especially hates the ghettoes, and often makes them his targets for arson. He is very controlling of everything and everyone in his life, and wants submission from those around him one way or another. Sometimes he even wishes the world would bow to his whims. Despite all his megalomaniacal designs, however, every day he wakes up and goes to work he is reminded of the worm he truly is, and this anger, this hatred for the world that has seen fit to place him in the lowest rung of society is what makes him want to set it on fire.
    Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Biography: Daniel was born the third of five children to James and Rachel Morris. Daniel's father was a Truck driver while his mother was a waitress. His family was not very well off, and growing up his home life was not very stable, least of all because both parents began to drink heavily and James began to have numerous affairs when he wasn't in Michigan. Nevertheless Daniel looked up to his father, and was crushed when he was killed in an accident while on the road. After that, the family deteriorated yet more, with things only being made worse as his older siblings left the house, leaving only the drunken, depressed mother to lead the household. Daniel began to have behavioral problems at school, and soon started to be absent alltogether, and tried to unsuccessfully run away from home several times. Finally, when he was around 14 years old, he managed to run away for good and never look back, taking with him his father's old hat, a butterfly knife, $300, and the clothes on his back. This is when he started going by assumed names, taking various odd jobs and sleeping wherever he could. Daniel had yet to show any signs of having superpowers by this point, and he wouldn't until he was around 23, working at a truck stop near Saginaw. There, while he was off taking a smoke break, a fuel truck whose driver had stopped for a quick bite to eat suddenly started sputtering. Daniel ran to see what the problem was, only to be caught in the middle of a fiery explosion. Of everyone at that truck stop, he was the only survivor. He was completely unburned, though he was still covered in scratches and bruises. After waking from unconsciousness in the hospital, there was a shift in his body and mind. He felt new desires, and new passions. He had been possessed by the thing he had witnessed. From then on he knew how to manipulate the flames, and what he wanted to do with them. He lept out the window and hasn't been seen in the state of Michigan since...
Powers: The Ability to manipulate and create fires and explosions, and invulnerability to them.

Approved, provided your ability to manipulate is within reason and that, while you might be invulnerable to an explosion, you won't be invulnerable to a kinetic impact or shrapnel from a bomb or artillery shell.

  • Tag.  I think I may have an antidote for this "westside Schorcher".  Consider: An airbender for lack of a better term.  Not necessarily bulletproof, but as long as there's oxygen in the air, he can manipulate it for a wide variety of purposes (Example, ciphoning oxygen out of harmful gasses and water in order to breathe, cause friction around his body to keep warm/keep air perfectly still to move around silently/enhanced hearing and smell due to, well, oxygen).  He also may or may not have "charged attacks/effects" that require stamina and concentration to maintain/pull off.  Example: Manipulate the winds to a hurricaine like-force to dissuade attackers/potential projectiles/fly and glide through the air, or his signature "Death's Breath", where he overloads every cell in an opponent's body with oxygen, causing a (relatively) swift and clean death.

The TL;DR of my character's background is that he is the son of a Mafia-man, but alas was woefully asthmatic.  The Military/Govt. decided to do several experimental treatments on him, in exchange for him ratting on his rivals and allowing his son to be in the military.  As such, he is a natural conduit of oxygen, technically not requiring a traditional respiratory system to "breathe" (though having a set of lungs certainly helps).  Eventually, he found out he could manipulate oxygen for a variety of tasks.  One thing lead to another, and he is now a hitman with a moral compass, who rarely kills.

  • Name: Thurmond þrumði-øx Alias: The Berserkr
    Age and Gender: 22, male
Appearance: Imagine this but with a long ponytail wrapped in leather (P.S. the blood is optional)
Thurmond is a traditionalist in terms of clothing. Spending almost 13 years with a Pagan extremist group is most likely the source of this. He wears loose fitting Rus trousers and High leather boots, though occasionally will wear more regular pants if he is to be in densely populated areas. He wears regular tee shirts underneath a leather modern style gambeson. In winter he wears a Sheepskin coat with a bear pelt collar. He keeps his hair brushed straight back, but lets some of it go wild in the front, and gathers the rest of his long hair in a single braided ponytail which he wraps in leather. He wears a belt with two loops for his axes.

Personality: A little loose in the head as a result of the experiments on him. Often very quiet, sounding very cool and calculating, but at the same time he can turn to frothing rage at the drop of pin and murder everyone in a room. He can be sadistic to his enemies if he wants to, or quite merciful. He is somewhat nervous around women, mostly due to his life in a lab deprived of real interaction with them. This does not apply during a rampage however. His attitude in battle is that of a bloodthirsty killer, and his weaponry mirrors this. He carries dual Viking style tomahawks and a dagger (the words being in Runes not English)
And a Basic bow, which he electrically charges the arrows.

Alignment: Chaotic Neutral, often leaning towards evil.

Biography: Thurmond Þrumði-ox (Thunder-axe) was once known as Ivar Bjornson. Was abducted at the age of 7 by an unusual neo-paganistic extremist group, the Children of Fenrir. This group kidnapped young children who either had previous powers or could receive them in some way. Ivar had the ability to create light static shocks to those around him. Utilizing various implants, they heightened his dexterity and focused his electric talents and trained him how to use them, but severely limited human contact. Eventually the pain and lack of interaction drove the young man, now known as Thurmond, into a bloodlust. He killed nearly everyone in the facility, staff and other children alike, earning his name "the Berserkr". He left the area and eventually calmed down, and began to utilize his talents for his own personal gain, often as hired muscle. A faint electric aura surrounds him, almost like static that one can feel on their skin, and a light smell of rainfall accompanies this.

Powers: True to his name, Thurmond can manipulate electricity. Thurmond has both genetic powers and biometric implants to center these powers. The ways he can manipulate it include being able to fire medium sized bolts from his hands in a direct beam ( not like Count Dooku more like an electrified laser) and he can imbed electric energy inside objects, such as his duel tomahawk blades and arrowheads. He can also use it to overload electrical systems and such. In addition, thanks to the implants in his legs he has an increased jump ability, but nothing too fancy. Drawbacks being his actual beams are not really all that strong outright as they are not large nor continuous, and that his is in almost all other ways normal. He is of a higher strength than some people but that is mostly due to extended physical training. Ulterior problems include the fact that he is easily distracted and or tricked during one of his berserk rampages, and that his powers are useless against anything that can neutralize electricity.

Everything here sounds good to me, provided you don't start treating your air like hard light (like Aang kinda does sometimes). Put it in a character app and you are pretty much good to go.

  • Preface and disclaimer sort of thing:
My quibbles are with the intention of sussing out scope, and aren't meant as a rejection in any way. I just figure asking these lets both sides understand better what they're dealing with, since you might visualize your character one way, but Ashton (who has explicitly stated 'no unexplained powers just magically arising') might see them as just gaining some new power because they were under duress (and 'powers as the plot demands' frustrate everyone with their deux ex machina bullshit).
An additional thing is that, as with literally everyone in comics, my default assumption is that everyone has martial arts skills, is just incredibly athletic and unusually strong, and is generally in the top 5%, if not .01%, of human intelligence, simply because if you look at, say, Batman's Rogues Gallery, the vast majority of them are going to say something along the lines of 'peak physical condition, peak intelligence, skilled in hand-to-hand combat', or words to that effect. That's just sort of something vaguely assumed about comics in general, which is why we don't panic about the One Rule being broken when Batman punches the Joker through 4 walls, because for some inexplicable reason he can take it.
Naturally, Ashton may disagree, and it might not fit the vision of your character, but that's my default assumption, because real talk all superhero things are escapist fantasies anyway, and who wants to have an escapist fantasy where everyone is an overweight, out-of-shape schlub? That's real life!

    Justinian:
It's sort of implicit that if you're resistant to temperature highs that you'll likely be resistant to temperature lows as well, if only through, say, covering yourself in fire which you're invulnerable to anyway.
How do his fires start? Does he just manipulate a pre-existing fire without the ability to create it, or (a la Pyro) is he just kind of making fire from somewhere like Firestorm? Does this fire need fuel of some sort, or is it just sort of the Human Torch style 'yeah nothing's burning it's just fire' kind of fire? Can he shoot it from his hands, is it restricted to touch, is it just sort of 'if it's in line of sight', or does he just need to visualize it (and so could theoretically start a fire in a room he can see through CCTV, or even one he just remembers?)
Does he create explosions just out of nowhere? How large can they get? How small can they get? Can he shape them? How does he target them (see the long question right above)? Is this a very forceful, detonative explosion (which would be more of like Plastique's 'project explosive force' deal), or more of a deflagration (which is a just really fast-burning fire) - essentially is this a real-life, very-little-fire explosion or a Hollywood 'let's just make a FAE for everything' explosion?

Is his thing specifically oxygen? That seems, paradoxically, a bit narrow, but also alarmingly overpowerful to my mind, if he can manipulate it on a molecular level (e.g. stripping all the oxygen out of water, making it just...hydrogen... which is an alarmingly terrifying concept - to say nothing of just ripping the oxygen atoms out of people's bodies and causing molecules to stop being right. And if he can change the state of oxygen at will - well, dumping all that heat from turning the gas into a liquid (or a solid!) would put out an inordinate amount of energy, and honestly it would probably require that an important ancillary part of this powerset would require invulnerability to a wide range of temperatures - or provide it simply by always having a 'bubble' of, er, room-temperature air around him.).
I would be a lot more comfortable if it was more along the lines of being able to manipulate the air in general, but in the relatively more restricted sense that you tend to get with people who 'manipulate the element of air'. So not really so much molecular-level fiddling, just kind of moving it around at various speeds - and of course you could create a Maxwell's Demon sort of situation where you're selectively dumping oxygen/nitrogen/whatever gas off in one specific area, which does seem like that molecular-level fiddling on the surface but sort of excludes actively removing the oxygen from, say, nitrous oxide, or messing with ozone to create oxygen gas and a free oxygen atom.

But yeah on to serious comments.
What is a 'basic bow'? Followup: are his weapons etc. all made out of something fancy (comic-book fancy, like 15,000 folded meteoric iron alloyed with mithril, adamantium, y'know, fancy-sounding shit), or could he be taken out with the simple expedient of breaking his weapons first?
How far can these bolts go? Are these like Cyclops-style, very destructive bolts, or more like an astonishingly convenient taser? You say they're not continuous - so it's kind of like a Star-Wars style blaster gun? How many can he push out in, say, a 10 second period? Can he do both hands at once?
How high can he jump with those implants - over a house, 10 stories, over a skyscraper? Does he need to land on his feet to be okay (e.g. Portal), or does he have enhanced durability?

Personality: crazy to normal humans but they are the crazy ones, fights for the good of mankind (sometimes makes it worse for himself), he's a loner not one for long term relationships.

loves: tech, swords (big ones), fighting, honour in fights if its a unfair fight he'll walk away the harder the fight the more he loves it.

super powers: Intelligence (mad scientist type of intelligence) augmented his strength by 100% and speed by 100% to be the best he can be with a sword.

powerarmour: gives him enhanced strength, speed and toughness can with stand great hits, explosions and fire.

Hm. I'm always wary of hyperintelligence as a superpower, but as long as you don't abuse it at every point you should be fine.
Doubling his strength and speed and presumably his swordsmanship seems to be a little bit underpowered to me, but I suppose you have the bioarmor to correct that.

How much does the bioarmor enhance his speed and strength? What kind of resistance does it have to "great hits, explosions, and fire", because it can't have complete invulnerability to any of those.

You need to lay out these things before I give approval.

Preface and disclaimer sort of thing:

I appreciate that you're taking the time to nitpick because sweet Christ you are good at finding loopholes and things like that. I didn't even think about most of this stuff.

However, for starters, I do disagree with your "automatic peak intelligence, peak performance" notion. While you might see it as a necessity for the escapism of it all, I see it as "powers as the plot demands" lite. Take your Joker vs. Batman example: if Batman were to throw Joker through four solid walls (which, as a unpowered human, he shouldn't be able to do without technological assistance anyways), an unarmored unpowered Joker should be either dead or seriously injured. Now, this doesn't happen, because he's the got-dam Joker. However, that excuse can not and will not fly here. Just because your character can shoot lightning from his hands doesn't mean he automatically can solve highly complex astrophysical equations or lift a car/sprint a marathon at top speed too. It sounds somewhat ridiculous and obvious when I say it here, but that's what opening the "peak intelligence, peak performance" door to everyone would allow for. And not everyone has to be an "overweight, out of shape schIub". In fact, nobody does: everyone can be and should be athletic and smart. But you shouldn't be "peak" anything unless that's in your powers. I might be willing to bend and allow for increased durability and survivability for everyone purely to reduce the hero casualty rate, but at the end of the day everyone's not bulletproof (unless they're wearing a vest or that's a defined part of their powers).

TL;DR: I don't want to take away the escapism, but I think that allowing everyone to have "peak performance and peak intelligence" without having a good excuse for each character is too much. Just having your characters be undefined athletic and smart though is fine.

And about all the evil people, I know, right? This first group story thread will be very interesting, because it's actually kind of a thing that only neutrals/good alignments should logically be involved in. Im going through with it though lol

Alright. So, +500% of a regular humans capabilities and can withstand the damage that an M1 Abrams tank can withstand (without reactive armor): no more, no less. I think that makes sense.
