Average lifespan is 120-150, right? So would it make sense for me to be around 70/80?

Keep in mind, though, that leaving home wouldn't in itself be enough to make our father pass over you. Either you did something you shouldn't have or you didnt do something you should have. So I don't think your reason for leaving initially would have been business, although your travels likely equipped you to run the shipping side of things very well now.

I was going to put myself in my 70s, so it looks like we're thinking alike!
Okay, so it appears that the elder Valerians' focuses are breaking down as follows:
 - Taulover: Shipping
 - Colberius: Banking
 - Aragonn: Shipbuilding
 - Laurentus: Politics

The sons should each choose one of the above for their focus, as well, so that each one of you is being prepared to take over one aspect of the House's holdings in the future.

And being focused on one category does not mean that you can't participate in others, don't worry. That goes for younger and elder Valerians alike.

Yeah, I imagine my character wouldn't have been able to do whatever he did to save the king if he didn't have a few of the skills and knowledge his brothers and nephews did, so that makes sense.

Perhaps a life as a banker just wasn't for you, and you walked out of the family and its expectations for you? That in turn caused our father to disinherit you, and you only came back after years of travelling and were shocked to discover that our father had died in the meantime?

Another would be that we had received news that you had died in your travels, and SURPRISE SURPRISE, that news was exaggerated as you just randomly returned one day.

Hmm, @Wintermoot, if you were a RL king, and you made me a noble, would there ever be any circumstances under which you would forgive me if you ever found out that while undoubtedly saving your life and extending your power well beyond what it was, I also murdered entire foreign noble families to have them replaced with more easily manipulated distant cousins to achieve my goals?

I'd like my character to be a ruthless bastard, but I'm having trouble thinking of a way to work around that particular detail.
