  • The Exodite Dominion
    The Species
The Damli, also known by their scientific name daemonae peregrinus and by Exodite, are a sentient race of bipedal humanoid carbon-based mammals. Although they share many characteristics with IRL humans, they have several major differences, both superficial and internal, that allow them to be easily differentiated from most other humanoid species.
-Damli skin is usually colored on a spectrum between pale white and a deep dark red, due to naturally occurring pigments produced by skin cells and blood flow. Very rarely, pigments produced by psychically enhanced skin cells allow for green Damli, although these deviations typically die before breeding age due to other medical complications that are activated by the mutation. Much Occultist attention is devoted towards developing a gene therapy treatment that allows for the psychically active green-skin mutation without the complications, to little success.
-Damli are born with, and grow up using, an extra pair of fully-functional arms in the center of their torso. These are creatively called "underarms" by members of the Damli species, as opposed to their "upperarms" which, like other humanoids, begin at the shoulders. The bone, spinal, nerve, cardiovascular and muscle structure is modified heavily to optimize the use of the additional limbs, making the specifics of internal Damli anatomy very different from those of humans.
-Somewhat in connection with the above, although the average height of Wanderers are approximately the same and (after accounting for the extra arms) the average weight is similar as well, Damli hearts 25% smaller and significantly weaker than human hearts, and their lungs are about 10% smaller as well. This is due to the fact that, before their exodus, the atmosphere of the Damlicant homeworld was extremely rich in diatomic oxygen which the life on that planet used intensively for respiration, so intensive improvement of their cardiovascular system was not an evolutionary priority until they reached other, less oxygen-rich worlds. Limited biological engineering has allowed for some improvement in this state of affairs, but there are still many environments where the constant use of rebreathers or pressure suits are a requirement for otherwise healthy Damli.
-Although they have acquired agriculture and all the trappings of advanced civilization, the Damli are carnivores and predators by nature, and their prominent canine teeth and superb senses show it.
-Damli have breeding seasons. During these times, males produce steroids and get hyper-aggressive, the females ovulate and easily become emotional, and both sides become ready to... erm... do their thing at the drop of a hat. The specific timing of said seasons varies by clan (a term designating groups equivalent to human "races") with random overlap. For social cohesion, the Admiralty has chosen to keep it that way, making sure units are genetically diverse so that the vast majority of the unit won't have their judgement clouded by neurochemicals at any given time.
-Damli require a comparatively vast amount of calories to maintain a high body temperature for their body processes. Adult Damli require a base intake of 5,000 calories each day or they will either starve to death or die of hypothermia, depending on the circumstances.
    History
To understand why the people of the Exodite Dominion are doing what they are doing, one first must take a look at their history.
In the beginning, what we would eventually come to call the Damli were an unremarkable species, born on Exodius, a small rocky and wet planet orbiting the star Ghastarian V. Forming clans and city-states that evolved into nation-states and empires, they loved, fought, lived, and died over the course of millennia. A religion was born, inspired by their psychic experiences, worshiping the Great Other that lived far beyond the holy mantle of stars. The priests of this religion also served as scientists, creating the position that most Wanderers are currently familiar with as "the Occultists", those who seek out and make an attempt to understand the hidden. Slowly driven by war and demand, their technological capacity eventually increased and plateaued at a level approximately equivalent to that of humanity during WWI. Both fueled and pruned by constant war, Damli society seemed to be at a standstill.

Then, one clear night nearly a thousand years ago, everything changed. From the stars they fell like meteorites: a small group of refugees from the collapse of some galactic nation who were seeking a home suitable for oxygen breathing, carbon-based life arrived at the Damli homeworld in a small fleet of fire-breathing ships. As soon as they landed, these settlers began to build small villages and industry to support themselves, fueled by advanced technology. Naturally, the empire on whose territory the Outsiders (as they came to be called) had landed was not pleased with this turn of events, and sent an army to destroy these people from the stars. A fierce battle occurred, with the Damli using blades, rifles, and artillery, and the Outsiders using laser weapons and missiles. After three days of constant fighting, the battle ended. Although the settlers from space were highly advanced and a few of them were even versed in close combat, Warriors they were not, and the Outsiders eventually succumbed to the overwhelming numbers of the Damli forces. The empire, damaged as it was, saw the value of what they found and collected the advanced technology left behind and enslaved the Outsiders, using both to reverse engineer and reconstruct Outsider technology under the guidance of the Occultists.

As news of this development spread, it sent shockwaves through the governments of the Damli world. Invaders from another world were a part of the human psyche since the beginning in one way or another, but to the Damli, the thought simply had never occurred. Those few brilliant minds who had, whether by pure conjecture or by study and calculation, came to realize the possibility of extraterrestrial life were branded as heretics by the Occultist community and were promptly forgotten amidst the myriad wars and struggles of Damli civilization. The Occultist community understood and agreed with the mathematics and observations of these few Cassandras, but disagreed with their ideas on principle: the moons and planets of their home star were clearly lifeless, and such an idea was useless in an environment that required constant study of psychic abilities and war. Any mysterious psychic signals from the stars were obviously just coming from the Great Other, and should be interpreted as such. However, now they had their evidence, in the mysterious metal lying in crates in their laboratories, in the blue flames and yellow beams that Warriors swore on their sacred honor that they witnessed on scorched battlefields, in the dead-eyed and weeping slaves they now lorded over that were unlike anything else on this planet. A drastic change was needed in Damli society, and it needed to happen now. Fueled by fear of reprisals from the heavens and by confusion, war between Damli ground to a halt for the first time ever. Briefly.

The final war between Damli was as brutal as it was sudden. In the wake of this discovery, the three largest empires on the planet and their vassal states formed a council. They came to the conclusion that, if the greater universe was anything like their own world, war with an advanced warrior species from the stars was just around the corner. If they did not act immediately, drastically, and decisively, the entire Damli species would be liable to utter annihilation. In order to combat this threat, they decided to unite under one banner, thereby uniting two thirds of their world under one flag: the Exodite Domain. Their forces were made into seven approximately equal forces, which were placed in the hands of a council of seven Admirals, the best military and brightest commanders of the Damli world. Among themselves, they shared the advanced technology stolen from the (now worked to death and dissected) Outlanders to convince the other nations into joining or, if that failed, to force all others into submission. Although many capitulated and joined the ranks of the Domain, an intense yet futile effort was given by a few the remaining Damli nations to defend their sovereignty. A holocaust ensued: not fully understanding that the devastation they could cause could make their world uninhabitable, the armies of the Dominion made liberal use of their new laser carbines and atomic weapons. Rebel nations were reduced to deserts of radioactive fire and ash overnight. Entire clans disappeared from historical records, eliminated in the total war for the future of the Damli species. Ultimately, all who resisted were either eliminated by the unstoppable weapons of the Dominion, or were captured and made into slaves to build what was needed next. This world would no longer suit them. For the first time, the Wanderers stopped looking at the stars with curiosity and reverence. Now, on clear nights, they looked up at the galaxy with covetous and hopeful eyes.
    Government & Society
The Exodite Dominion is a mixture of a technocracy and a stratocracy, a military government dedicating to leading the species to conquer the stars while maintaining the functionality of worlds they conquer, settle, and leave behind. Their entire society is divided into castes which are determined via a series of tests given to young Damli as soon as they first reach adulthood at the chronological age of 15 Earth years.
-Builders: "Those who are chosen to create". Builders are the largest single caste representing about 45% of all Damli, and their duties are diverse. Frequently working alongside Occultists, Builders are responsible for the organization of their workforce collection of resources, building and producing ships and all manner of technology, and maintaining the numerous Fleets. Many Builders are doctors as well, treating ailments sustained by Warriors in battle and by Builders in accidents or disease. Wise Admirals pay close attention to the Builders, as if something is crucially wrong with an aspect of the Dominion, they are among the first to see it.
-Warriors: "Those who are chosen to fight". Warriors are the backbone of the Exodite Dominion's military forces, representing about 39% of the total Damli population. Trained in the use of weapons ranging from planet-cracking Executioner bombs to Laser Carbines and Caishing nanoswords, Warriors lead the charge, both to conquer new lands for the Exodite Dominion and defend the established Damli settlements from encroachment. Among the Warrior class are officers below the upper Admiralty such as Ensigns, as well as Pilots and their Captains (the specific command structure will be explored in detail under the Military section).
-Occultists: "Those who are chosen to see". Occultists serve a triple role in Exodite society: priests, scientists, and guides to psychic skill and advanced technology. They lead strange psychic rituals to ensure success and victory by invoking the power of the Great Other. They also perform continuous experiments of all kinds from the mundane to the outlandish in order to enrich and empower the Dominion over her enemies. Working in tandem with Builders (as well as those under the command of builders) and occasionally Warriors, great and terrible works of technology and engineering are wrought with Occultists. Occultists are comparatively rare, representing about 16% of the population.
-The Admiralty: "Those who are chosen to lead." The Admiralty are those who are specially chosen to be the leaders of the Exodite Dominion, representing a fraction of a percent of the total population. Although in each generation there are hundreds of Damli chosen to be in this class, only seven will actually be appointed  by the Council to be an Admiral at any given point. The rest are assigned to leadership positions among the pilots, Builders, and Warriors until an existing Admiral dies, resigns, or is otherwise unable to lead. Admirals are trained to understand concepts of science, Damli law, politics, psychology, and all sorts of strategy to assist them in their decision making. The one goal of the Admirals of the Exodite Dominion is to make sure the Damli species prospers and expands: anything else is unimportant.
-Slaves: Formed from the ranks of races subjugated by the Exodite Dominion as well as criminals and traitors from the Damli species, Slaves by far form the greatest number of sentient beings in the Dominion. Their job is relegated to primitive resource collection and refinement (i.e. labor-intensive agriculture, mining, and production). Slaves have no rights under any Admiralty law, and any Exodite can do with a captured slave as he or she wishes.
    Military
    Army
The Exodite Army is the ground force of the Dominion's forces, and where most of the Warrior class can be found. Working hand-in-hand with the space-borne Fleet, they go into battle with fearless hearts and the goal of conquest.

    Medic
    Sergeant
Specialist (Combat Occultist, Demolitionist, Combat Engineer, Scout)
    Major
    Colonel
    Brigadier
    Terrestrial Force General
    Council Admiral
    Units & Loadout
    Standard Soldier/Marine
-Weapons: Two 5.45x39mm laser ablation Carbine weapon ("standard Carbine") with four "hard ammo" magazines of 45 rounds and two extra nuclear batteries. Side weapons include a Caishing nanosword and two plasma or standard fragmentation grenades.
-Armor & Equipment: Standard armor is unpowered magnalium armor over the chest, head, and crotch area held together by modified kevlar clothes, and a mithrilium helmet with a reinforced quartz visor and a oxygen supply. Extra equipment, such as additional life support, shields, and night vision can be attached to the armor as specialized modules if available.

    Land Gunner:
-Weapons: One standard Carbine (same gun as the Soldier), without the Caishing sword, and grenades. Uses a Plasmafire guided missile launcher with ten missiles, a 12.7x99mm autorail with four standard chains of 300 rounds, or other types of anti-armor weapons or artillery ranging from short range MLRS to long range railcannons.
-Armor & Equipment: same armor as the Soldier/Marine, with the addition of night vision-capable target designators and long-range radio communicators as a standard loadout, along with a load-bearing industrial exoskeleton if needed.

    Medic:
-Weapons: One standard Carbine, a 9x18mm incendiary gunpowder pistol (2 clips of 20 rounds), and a shorter nanosword.
-Armor & Equipment: Along with the standard Soldier armor, medics carry extra life support gear as a standard as well as advanced medical supplies (such as nanites and painkillers) and a strong but unarmored combat exoskeleton. They also have a standard communication radio.

    Scout:
-Weapons: 9.3x62mm semiautomatic coilgun sniper rifle with a dual optical/infrared scope with a computerized HUD readout. Extra weapons include the short-bladed nanosword and two multipurpose small infantry explosives that can be programmed to fulfill a variety of needs.
-Armor & Equipment: Scouts typically wear lightweight, unplated carbon-fiber armor and a primitive electronic active-camo shroud to hide their movements along with a electronics-filled helmet. Scout gear is filled to the brim with powerful sensors to analyze the enemy and a powerful transmitter to send and receive information to Fleet ships and Army commanders.

    Sergeant:
-Weapons: Two 7.62x51mm autorails with 6 cartridges of 45 rounds, a plasma-edged Caishing sword, and 5 grenades (hellfire, fragmentation, concussion, plasma, etc.).
-Armor & Equipment: Sergeant armor consists of a similar build to standard Soldier armor, with the magnalium and kevlar being replaced by mithrilium and carbon fiber respectively, giving it a massive boost in armor strength. A powerful exoskeleton also gives the Sergeant armor class a boost in maneuverability. A robust communication array allows them to control battlefield movements.

    Combat Occultist:
-Weapons: Standard loadout for a CO is one standard Carbine with ammo and an electricity-enhanced Caishing sword. Depending on their specific mission, they can carry a number of devices: arcing electric weapons, flamethrowers filled with Hellfire compound, dispersal machines for chemical or biological weapons, and psychic enhancement apertures are among the favorites of the Occultists. In hand to hand combat, they can use voltnets, which are electrically charged metal meshes used to incapacitate and capture the enemy.
-Armor & Equipment: Combat Occultists typically wear the standard Sergeant armor class, although they are occasionally given permission to use War Mantles on account of their understanding of the machines. They also carry scanners, syringes, and occasionally nanites for their scientific purposes.

    Demolitionist:
-Weaponry: One 5.45x39 mm coilgun with spark arrester, one short unpowered nanosword. Demolitionists, depending on the situation, have access to explosives ranging from concussion grenades to nuclear weapons, with fragmentation and Hellfire landmines being the most common.
-Armor & Equipment: Demolitionist armor is a heavy, thick, multi-layered suit with layers of insulation for thermal protection, as well as heavy lead plating for protection against radiation and shrapnel. Most Demolitionists also have a decent power system protected by the armor for easier handling and mobility of dangerous explosives.

    Officer (Ranks: Major and above):
-Weaponry: Two 11.43x77mm overclocked laser Carbine rifles with 4 batteries and 8 cartridges of 50 "hard" rounds. 10 holsters for different types of grenades or mid-sized multipurpose explosive devices. A decorated Caishing nanosword with an energy-field blade enhancement also is carried at all times by members of the Officer corps.
-Armor and Equipment: The specifics will vary determining on the rank, but all ranks Major and above possess a War Mantle and the armor and communication equipment that it comes with. These ranks can order specialized supplies to be dropped by the Fleet, giving them much greater room to use materiel.

    Fleet
The Fleet is the total summation of the Exodite Dominion's aerospace attack force. Using hundreds of thousands of large and powerful starships, they work tirelessly to ensure the territorial advance of the Dominion and to ensure victory in the vast and hostile abyss of space.

    Technology
The Exodites have a variety of unique technology that will be explored here in brief.

    Military Technology
-Laser Carbines: standard-issue portable laser weapons fueled by multi-use nuclear batteries. Capable of punching through most infantry armor as well as thin terrestrial vehicle armor with no more than five hits. If loaded with bolts made from depleted uranium or a similarly dense alloy, this anti-infantry weapon can rapidly become a useful anti-armor weapon at close range.
-Caishing Nanoswords: Named for the sound made when drawn from their vacuum sheaths, Caishing nanoswords are sharpened down to the atom at their creation. A unique silicon-carbon-iron alloy allows them to consistently be sharp down to the molecule even after use. The blades are capable of slicing through mithrillium alloy if given enough pressure, and can be enhanced with plasma and electrical coatings.
-Hydrogen bombs: Self explanatory to anyone born after 1961. The Exodites like 'em big. Like, planet-cracking big.
-Antimatter Explosives: harvested from gas clouds and produced by giant particle accelerator arrays on settled worlds, antimatter projectiles are available for use by Exodite Army special forces or by the largest Dreadnoughts of the Fleet.
-Plasmatip missiles: space-borne projectiles approaching a target protected an atmosphere by heavily shields will have a small onboard nuclear generator works to produce a layer of plasma on the leading edge of the missile, giving it greater penetrating power and freeing it from much atmospheric interference.
-Cloaking: Primitive cloaking devices can allow stationary objects to be invisible to most kinds of visible light, and allows for moving objects like Scouts and Scout vessels to remain undetected.
    -Reaper: TBW, Researching
    War Mantle
The War Mantle is the name for an extremely advanced regenerative infantry power armor, crafted delicately by the most skilled Builders and the wisest and most learned Occultists for commanders on the ground or in combat.

-Defense: Making liberal use of nanotechnology, the War Mantle uses microscopic shock absorbers, super-strong carbon fiber, and the highest power energy shield that you can find outside of a spacecraft to protect it's wearer. In testing, users have actually been seen throwing out the folds of the Mantle to "intercept" high-caliber bullets coming from stationary guns (obviously, the reflexes aren't actually that fast to intercept bullets: they blocked bullets they knew were coming).

-Strength: Micromachinery and a thin yet high-strength mithrilium load bearing exoskeleton not only renders the heavy armor super light to it's wearer, but gives the user strength and agility abilities unseen anywhere else, except perhaps for industrial lifting exoskeletons.

-Sight: As the War Mantle is predominantly used by high-level battlefield commanders, the helm of the armor is packed with sensors and micro-supercomputers (the processing power of IRL iPhones) as well as a highly encrypted and powerful communication line, allowing for the wearer to be extremely aware of his surroundings and able to access all tactical options.

-Regeneration: Nanites play a large role in the War Mantle. Using carbon from wrecked parts, dust in the air, or even scrubbed from CO2 in the atmosphere, they can repair the armor over time. Large wounds take longer to heal than small wounds, but as long as the Core isn't significantly damaged, given enough carbon the entire Mantle can be rebuilt from scratch.

-ONE WITH THE ARMOR, ONE WITH THE FIGHT: The nanites also do something rather... unsettling, when a Damli puts on the War Mantle. They immediately and seamlessly merge the armor with the body, nerves, and muscle of the operator, turning the War Mantle and the Damli pilot into one symbiotic organism built for the destruction of others. This allows for a flawless and smooth and easy command of the myriad parts and controls of the Mantle. However, the disadvantages of this are spelled down below.

-The one weakness, the Core: the crystalline fusion battery and the surrounding micro-quantum computer system that fuels and commands the entire War Mantle is called "the Core", and it is typically worn either on the chest or the back of the operator, depending on their preference. The Core is heavily armored, but if it damaged beyond repaired or destroyed by a high-powered explosive or anti-tank weapon, the entire Mantle system would be disabled, rendering the armor greatly weakened, unable to regenerate, and too heavy to be carried. And, if the power of the Core and the nanites were to fail before the emergency ejection sequence is complete, or if the Damli pilot had received significant brain damage before activating the armor... Let's just say the result is very painful and very ugly, even if the pilot somehow briefly survives.
-Hellfire compound: "Hellfire" is the generic Damli term for the real-life chemical Chlorine trifluoride (ClF3). Used as an incendiary weapon, the chemical is a favorite of Occultists and Demolitionists, since it is incredibly reactive and can even set fire to ashes. It is usually kept as a liquid in quartz containers within weapons that utilize the compound until it is ready to be used.

    MEDICAL/OTHER
-Medical nanobots: known by the Builders as "medic in a bottle" and to Medics and Occultists as "nanites", these are microscopic robots designed to destroy cancer and diseases as well as repair damaged tissue (only if given the time and material to do so, however).
-Scanner: A pocket supercomputer that uses a fluctuating beam of light to scan objects and tell everything it can about the object to it's user.
-Mistarillium alloy: a special alloy made from gold, aluminum, carbon, and traces of several heavier elements, mistarillium is an indispensable resource of the Exodite Dominion. It is heat resistant, lightweight, strong yet flexible, but incredibly difficult to work without using advanced tools and precise engineering at extremely high temperatures.
