Good lad. Was totally testing you.

On a related note, what's everyone's opinions on Bloody Marys? My RL friends universally hate them, but I personally think if they're properly made (i.e. with spices and a garnish, not just vodka and tomato juice), they're amazing. Especially if you're having one with a big breakfast or lunch.

Incidentally, one of my friends and I have been trying a variety of Whiskies lately. I've yet to find a bourbon I'm crazy about, but Balvenie 21 and Aberlour 18 have come out as my favourite Scotch. Lagavulin is also superb.

I've never gone the easy route in this area...on some level, deep down, I want it to be like this. I want it to be a challenge...something I have to work hard for and take risks at and even then may still not even be possible, because at the end...if it all works out, and I'm just a bit lucky, and something actually comes of it, I know that it's something special...something worth taking those risks and working for and just...having. And even if it doesn't work out, it's a reaffirmation of what I have really always wanted...perhaps something I've needed after drifting for a few years and edging ever-closer to cynicism.

Looking back at what I just wrote, I can almost find my inner emo kid again in all that...the person that wasn't afraid to feel and be vulnerable, before a crushing combination of NationStates and real life taught me the need for emotional discipline. It may have gone too far when I started to close myself off to make myself invulnerable to being betrayed and back-stabbed. It's not something that I decided to do...it's just something that happened because it hurt so much...but in the end, it's not worth it. It sucks not to have a group of close friends you can open up to and share anything with...it sucks to feel like there's nobody to spill your soul to...it sucks to feel like you're completely disconnected from everybody else. I would rather be open and vulnerable than closed and invulnerable. I can still be disciplined without being closed...I think I can, at least.

But here I am...taking up my old habit of making these sorts of introspective posts in SWOYM, sprouting off just anything I'm feeling or thinking. A step in the right direction, right?

Trying to locate mead that ships to South Africa is ridiculously hard. I guess I'll have to be a patriot and narrow my search to local breweries only.

Coincidentally, is there anyone here who has tried mead before, and can point me in the right direction? This will be my first time.

Oh man, I have had a few kinds of mead and I thought it was great! I thought it was really nice much nicer than beer (for me at least).

Sadly it was all at the paisley beer festival in June (and I get the irony).

Haha, yeah, people can't seem to make up their minds when they try to classify meads.

I got a series of blank expressions when I asked around about meads with my friends. Apparently, South Africans have absolutely no desire to try it.

It might just be the fact that alcohol is Scotland's biggest export but I hear about it all the time here, loads of distilleries and breweries offer it as a bonus with their regular stuff: though it is seen as a very premium thing unlike whiskey, cider or beer, and thus is really hard to find in shops and especially online.

As someone who has ties to the local SCA/Ren Faire community here, mead is big down here and I have tried varying kinds.  ask and ye shall know as best as possible @Laurentus.

Hmm, I'm considering wiring money into some foreign person's account so they can buy a bottle, and then hire some independent shipping agency to get it here, at this point.

EDIT: Or perhaps I should try my hand at brewing some.
