  • Welcome to Wintropolis
    Game Rules
    • No one may post in this thread unless they have a character listed in the party members section below.
    • No Godmodding; you are not allowed to give your characters abilities that would go against your character's bio, modify the environment to improve your current situation, or avoid the flaws listed in your characters bios when something that attacks those flaws influences your character. An example of this would be a fighting-based oaf suddenly developing electronic lock hacking abilities when finding himself locked in a cellar.

    • No Powerplay; controlling any other character other than your own. This is especially true in combat, and you should read the examples at the bottom of this list to see what kinds of things you should and shouldn't write. Note that there is a minor exception with relation to the GM; while the GM will never control your character's actions, they may control any effects that influence your character based upon the actions of your character and/or your party.

    • No Metagaming; having your character use any information, either OOC or placed in an IC context, that your character would not know about in the IC context. For example, using any information your character has not derived from conversation but is posted elsewhere about a fellow party member's history, or using information from the OOC thread that is related to the plot, or somehow allowing your character to mind-read the thoughts of another player (even though they wrote these thoughts in an IC context) and having your character respond to or act upon these thoughts.

    • No Unrealism; having your character act in an unrealistic manner based upon the current roleplay setting. For example, you wouldn't have your character randomly walk into a bar and start a fight with someone in that bar. This is also relevant to combat fights, where you should make these fights realistic based upon the actions of your enemies, but this is dealt with in the combat rules.

    • The party leader's decision is final. You may protest it, and in extreme cases you may elect to change your party leader to someone more reputable (through a majority vote of no confidence), but be aware that your party leader is the one who will be making any big decisions, having listened to any arguments presented.
    • The GM's actions are final, no matter what they entail. Also note that the GM will be using the blue color for environmental roleplay, and a bold text prefixed with the phrase GM to indicate any OOC GM notes, such as GM: Note that this room is pretty dark, take that into consideration. No-one else other than the GM is allowed to use either blue text or the word GM in any of their posts. You are allowed to use bold text, and it is required for command words (more on that in a later spoiler).

    • The party will carry a shared inventory, which items the party find or purchase are automatically placed into, and a gold purse. In addition, each party member contains a bag that can hold up to five small items, and are the only items that the party member can access and use during combat scenario's (described in the next spoiler). Any other items that party members want to carry should be equipped, which will modify the character's bio as appropriate. The party should work together to ensure everyone has access to supplies, and inform the GM of any usage, move or removal of items. The GM will then update the lists as appropriate.
    • Any spells that are found should take time to learn. How long is up to you, but please be realistic based upon the spell.
    Powerplay Examples
Imagine two goonies having a fight between each other, one called Albert and one called Benjamin.
    Quote

WRONG: Albert charged boldly toward Benjamin, swinging his knife toward the other man's head. Albert's sword raked the side of the other man's face, ripping through his flesh and causing a torrent of blood to gush from the man's face.

WHY: Obvious example of powerplay. You cannot connect your own attack and you cannot dictate the damage inflicted to another character.

WRONG: Albert charged Benjamin, swinging his knife toward the other man's head. Benjamin jerked his head to the side at the last possible second, but Albert was quick to recover from his missed swing, growling at the other man.

WHY: Even though Albert's player did not indicate damage, he still forced Benjamin's head to move, and exerted control over the other players' character.

RIGHT: Albert charged Benjamin, swinging his knife toward the other man's head.

WHY: This is the safest example -- Albert's actions have nothing to do with Benjamin other than that they are heading toward him and allows the other player to dictate exactly what happens to their character.

RIGHT: Albert charged Benjamin, swinging his knife toward the other man's head, aiming to slice through the other man's cheek and rip the flesh from it.

WHY: This is less safe than the other. Describing the potential damage caused by an attack is alright, but you must be very careful with your wording in these instances.
    Combat Rules
    • The GM will announce when combat mode is activated (or deactivated), based upon the actions of any NPCs or enemies you encounter, and/or the actions of the party. Only when combat mode is active do the following rules apply.
    • During combat mode, each player may only make one action, and should discuss possible actions carefully in the OOC thread. The party should work together to defeat the enemies, but there is no rule against non-participation in a combat event. This rule is reset only after the GM posts. So, it should go GM > Player 1 > Player 2 > Player 3 > GM > Player 2 > Player 1 > Player 3 > GM, etc.
    • During combat mode, a player may put down a conditional action (so that a character performs one action based upon the circumstance). If they do this, they must use the Action command word as follows: Action: heals Albert with Healing Ability if he takes damage, or attacks the goon otherwise. This should be done in addition to the roleplay equivalent. This replaces any use of the Heal command word. Command words should be placed at the end of your post.

    • During combat mode, you will not have access to the shared inventory, except for those items placed in your own bag. You may use your action to give an item in your bag to another player, providing that player uses his/her action to receive the item.
    • During combat mode, injuries may be sustained. Be aware that you are able to indicate which injuries you receive (as described in the health and injuries spoiler), and that you should make it as realistic as possible as to when and how you receive said injuries.
    Health and Injury Rules
    • Injuries may be sustained during combat, and/or when environmental triggers add to your injuries and GM informs you of such, and will affect the one and only stat (Health) that your character has. Unless the GM indicates otherwise, injuries sustained are added to your character by you. Try and be realistic and match it to the current situation, your characters abilities and their actions.
    • Medkits may only be taken by the character in question, if your character has access to one. Healing abilities may be used on any player at any time, according to game and combat rules. Healing another player in this way does not count as powerplay. You will also find most major towns have doctors or nurses who will heal characters, for a price.
    • When you sustain an injury, or heal yourself or another player, please indicate by using the following command words in bold font preceded with the text: Injury or Heal. For example: Injury: bleeding, cut to the arm, or Heal: casts Healing Cast on Albert and removes bleeding. Command words should be placed at the end of your post.

    • All injuries fall into classes, and you may specify only the class of injury instead of being more specific, although the injury sustained must be realistic based upon the situation. The following are the classes of injuries:
    • Bleeding - covers the majority of cuts, scratches or other holes cut into your character
    • Blinded - if you are unable to see
    • Broken* - bones, that is
    • Burned - from fire and heat related objects
    • Dazed - a knock to the head can cause a circle of birds
    • Deafened - too loud a noise
    • Fatigued* - although not necessarily an injury, it's added so you can affect your health stat with this
    • Paralysed - by electricity, or some other thing
    • Petrified* - turned to stone
    • Poisoned* - by poison
    • Sickened* - by illness
    • Unconcious* - the end all... if you are unconcious, you may no longer post; this is the only occasion when powerplay is temporarily allowed, although the party should aim to bring the character back to life according to the players wishes.

*Note that these conditions can't usually be fixed with a simple medkit or healing ability, and will take more effort. There are no rules indicating what this effort must entail, use your imagination.
    Command Words
A few words can be used by players to gain a response from the GM and/or other players. Command words should be placed in bold font at the end of the players post, with the roleplay equivalent of the command word (if there is one) as the post. The following can be currently used as command words:
    • Action: Used to define conditional actions based on how things pan out, as per Combat rules.

    • Decide: Used by the Party Leader only, this informs the GM of their choice to any decision that needs to be made.

    • Describe: Ask the GM to describe something further, equivalent of your character having a closer look.

    • Heal: Heal yourself or another, as per Healing rules. Can be replaced with Action during conditional actions in combat mode.

    • Injury: Describe an injury to your character, as per Injury rules.

    • OOC OR [OOC ...]: Used to bring quick OOC messages into the game thread for direct situational response.

The city of Wintropolis, located in the center of the region of Wintreath, home to an estimated 6 million people from the four corners of the world and everywhere in between. A peaceful place, Wintropolis has a booming technology industry, and some of the brightest minds in the world have made their residence here.

But not anymore. Recently, it was discovered that those with certain genes in them developed superhuman powers. Unfortunately, most of these superhumans decided to use their new abilities for crime. Needing a police force to combat the criminal superhumans, the Winter League was formed.

And that's where our story leaves us. You have just been accepted to the Winter League, and are about to go into your preliminary examination. Good luck!

  • GM: You are all sitting in the waiting room before the testing room. The previous group has just gone in for their test. Now would be a good time to chat it up and decide a party leader. The previous team will conveniently be in the testing room until you have decided.

  • Klause shut his eyes briefly. It had taken him a long time and not an inconsiderable amount of money to get here. Someone else spoke up, and he lifted his head to listen.

"Well, I for one believe that I should be the head of this group as I have the most person centric abilities and can near instantaneously disseminate information to the group. An invaluable skill in combat and otherwise." The speaker was a girl with quite dark brown hair and wearing nondescript clothes. Klause resisted the temptation to use his power, and considered her for a few moments.

He decided to wait for everyone else to have their say, and quietly closed his eyes again.

  • Klause waited for someone else to speak, but no-one was brave enough to step forward. He raised his head and looked at the girl who had spoken.

"Honestly, I don't see why you shouldn't be. You're the only one brave enough to have said anything so far." The temptation to use his power was there at the back of his mind, but once again he refused, shaking his head slightly. Need to get out of the habit of using it for everything, he thought to himself.
