An Auburn woman calling herself an ambassador for God and his son, Jesus Christ, filed a federal lawsuit Friday against all homosexuals.

Sylvia Driskell, 66, said in the suit that she is petitioning the U.S. District Court of Omaha to be heard "in the matter of homosexuality. Is homosexuality a sin, or not a sin?"

In a seven-page letter framed as a lawsuit, she cited Bible passages that described homosexuality as an abomination and against nature, and she said never before has the nation or the state been "besiege(d) by sin."

"Will all the judges of this nation judge God to be a lier [sic]?" Driskell asked.

She said she petitioned the court because she feels it imperative to stand up for the moral principles on which the nation was founded.

  • Moving this to the serious discussion forum, cause it desperately needs new content.

Something I've noticed in the last five years or so is that many social conservatives are in their own little world with seemingly little recognition of reality...on issues like gay rights they still believe they represent the vast majority opinion when that hasn't been true for a long time. It doesn't help that conservative media tells these people that they're right and that the other side are just a loud minority of trouble-makers that hate God and hate America that want to take away all their rights.

She's made such a fool of herself, and the sad thing is that she may never realize that.

  • This is unfortunately not exclusive to America. Many (not all) creationists share these sentiments all over the world.

While somewhat amusing (or sad/horrifying depending on how you look at it), there really isn't anything that we can say to them to make them see reason.

  • But what is somewhat unique to America is that there's a powerful media industry that reinforces their beliefs and allows them to essentially live in a bubble. I'm told that many conservatives were shocked (shocked!) that Obama won re-election back in 2012, because they had been told by these media outlets that there was no chance in hell that he could win and they believed it. This is one reason why you see so many conspiracy theories the right-wing...they can't believe that their views aren't in reality, and their views are backed up by the 'news', so obviously there must be some subversive liberal conspiracy. And a bunch of rich people that are involved in the industry make even more money off the whole thing.

It's really quite depressing, when you think about it.

  • Its a product of the ever-expanding gap between the "moderate" conservative and the "moderate" liberal. Gerrymandering, a royally fucked voting system, and (h/t to mooty) a media machine that reinforces extreme beliefts with sensational reporting leads to whackos like this lady having the confidence in herself and her justice system to go out and actually spend real money on this.

  • (*bashing head on wall with each word*) I. Hate. Morons.

I myself am a Creationist Christian, and it's people like this who make it so that no one can take us seriously.  Many of us are nothing similar to all of the grossly ignorant, seemingly uneducated members of the Christian church and Conservative political parties who manage to claim the international spotlight with their stupidity and/or discriminatory hatred. But, as with most groups in the world, we are identified only by those on the fringe of our group, and the label is given to all of us.

  • My father is Jewish, and my mother is a Protestant. They are both excellent people. The problem isn't the religious people themselves, but their doctrine. The bible really isn't friendly to homosexuals, women or many other groups and individuals. And the bible contradicts itself wildly as well.

So to me, it really seems that the more well-adjusted and open minded followers of these religions turn a blind eye to the more extreme practices and follow only the civilised ones. I truly believe the problem will continue as long as we pretend that the bible is okay.

Wait wait wait...so long as we pretend that the Bible is OK?  Do you want to abolish the Bible?  Is this something Congress should do?

I can't speak for other religions, but the Bible is not the rulebook for the Catholic religion (that's called the Catechism), and it was never meant to be. The Bible is a collection of stories and letters and legends collected by early Christians inspired by divine intervention. It is meant to be read, discussed, debated, and contemplated by groups and individuals and to assist them in their individual faith journeys. Every relationship with God is different, but we connect because we all share the Bible and our belief in its underlying concepts as a foundation of our other beliefs. It was never meant to be read literally. One of the first things I remember learning in Sunday school is to not read the Bible like a story book but as you would read poetry - analyze the content instead of taking it as straight fact.

  • LEVITICUS 18:22 Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.

LEVITICUS 20:13 If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable.

1 CORINTHIANS 6:9-10 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

There just isn't much room for interpretation.

And no, I don't believe the bible should be outlawed and abolished. If we do that, we're no better than religious extremists that want to burn anything that doesn't agree with their own collection of holy books. All that inspires is strife and rebellion. As society advances, more and more people are becoming atheists and agnostics. So I literally don't have to do a thing but let people slowly move away from these religions as they realise for themselves that they don't make sense.

  • Scott v. Sandford : 4. A free negro of the African race, whose ancestors were brought to this country and sold as slaves, is not a "citizen" within the meaning of the Constitution of the United States.

    5. When the Constitution was adopted, they were not regarded in any of the States as members of the community which constituted the State, and were not numbered among its "people or citizens." Consequently, the special rights and immunities guarantied to citizens do not apply to them. And not being "citizens" within the meaning of the Constitution, they are not entitled to sue in that character in a court of the United States, and the Circuit Court has not jurisdiction in such a suit.

Quoting the Old Testament and treating it as fact is the same as quoting the above and not recognizing the political, social, and cultural attitudes at the time it was written.

  • For a moment, let's overlook the idea that an all-seeing, all-knowing, all-powerful god would change his views on so much that he condemned for the (supposed) first 6000 years of creation, since an all-knowing god wouldn't need to be "corrected" or "softened" (and no, I'm not quoting you, Point Breeze) by the coming of his son into the world, and his son's own experiences of mortality.

Corinthians 1 and 2 are both part of the new testament. Of course I could be wrong there, seeing as I'm agnostic.

  • The real issue here is jurisdiction. Mrs. Driskell (henceforth referred to as The Dumb Plaintiff) has fiiled a suit against an entire people whose existence spans every country on earth, from a U.S. Court. The suit demands that the court extra-judicially charge foreign homosexuals in addition to homosexual citizens of America. Clearly, the suit itself is unconstitutional in this matter as well as in regards to the 6th amendment (specifically the right to trial by an impartial jury), not to mention the separation of church and state. No court in The U.S. can legally make a ruling that The Dumb Plaintiff wishes to see, nor can it make a ruling opposite to the wishes of The Dumb Plaintiff.

And let's keep in mind that The Dumb Plaintiff didn't reference any laws in the suit. Thus the case cannot in any form be decided.
