Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Wintermoot on July 25, 2015, 05:16:06 PM
Welcome to the Wintreath Civilization V topic! If you enjoy playing Civ and would like to have a fun time with your region-mates, consider joining in on a game. Our games are very social and casual, and they're a good way to get to know other people in the community while putting your strategic skills on display! You can find information about our games below. I hope you decide to join in on one!

Quote
How can I join? To join in our games, simply post that you will be available at the time the game is scheduled so we know to include you. We play our Civilization games over Steam, meaning that you will need to have Civ V on Steam and be willing to include me (and potentially other hosts) as a friend so that you can receive the game invites. My Steam is winterm00t (my avatar is a yellow sign), and other hosts will post there's as they need to.

What expansions do I need? The Gods & Kings and Brave New World expansions are required to play in our games. Having the other DLC is encouraged but not required. If someone without a DLC plays we will avoid using Civilizations from that DLC to allow them to play with us.

How long are games? Games usually take at least three hours to complete. If enough people have to leave a game early, it may be decided to stop and base the winner on the amount of points earned at that point. Also, hosts may choose to enable a turn timer to keep games running at a good pace, especially if the game includes players that have historically slowed down games.

When are games scheduled? Regular games are usually held at some point on weekends when the most people are available, but anybody can use this topic to attempt to schedule a game anytime. We can also discuss the details and settings of the game beforehand here!

Sorry for all the posts. :P I wanted to make a new Civ V topic that's neat and organized for new people so I can add it to the new gaming menu that's part of the new header. I hope it'll make our games more visible and open. :)

General information about the next game is in the post above, along with status of players and planned map settings. Please feel free to discuss as we have in the other topic before.

Also, invites to @Chanku, @Hugsim, @Joshua Bluteisen, and @Reon.

I might join, however I do have a few suggestions to change in the Settings.

Map Settings (subject to change):
Map Type: Pangea/Real world (I do enjoy the real world maps)
Map Size: Tiny, Small, or Standard depending on number of players

All victory types enabled

Advanced Game Options:
Enable Turn Timer: Depends on Number of Players
Allow Policy Saving: Yes
Allow Promotion Saving: Yes
Disable Start Bias: Yes
No Barbarians: No
Quick Combat: Yes
Quick Movement: Yes
Raging Barbarians: No
Random Personalities: Yes
The only one that I will essentially refuse to play is if Raging Barbarians is On. Barbarians are only an annoyance.

All they do is make the game more challenging...;-; They're even good under certain circumstances, especially if you invest in the Honor tree!

The start bias should really be a no... It hurts some Civs way more than others not to have the start bias and it makes some much much much harder to play, especially if you get something particularly non-advantageous...
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Wintermoot on July 26, 2015, 03:16:16 AM
But most people don't play those civs, and I hate starting in the desert ;-;
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Reon on July 26, 2015, 10:21:30 AM
That ain't even true... A lot of the Civs are like that... It makes the playing ground way more even for the civs...
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Wintermoot on July 26, 2015, 01:43:31 PM
How is it not true? It's never been a problem in games before...
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Reon on July 26, 2015, 05:38:57 PM
How would you know? A bad game by someone always looks the same and it's quite hard to determine why... Could be barbarians, could be ruins amounts, could be starting spot... It's always hard to tell.
How would you know?
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Wintermoot on July 26, 2015, 05:53:33 PM
Very few civilizations actually require a certain set of starting conditions, and random elements in games make for more variability and challenge. It's boring to start in the same type of place every time you play. By your logic, we should turn off barbarians and all other settings that have the potential to make things difficult for someone...
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Reon on July 26, 2015, 06:15:27 PM
The starting bias makes things A LOT harder for some civs... And far less so for others... And starting biases just make a lot of sense... I would be far happier if we had it...
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Reon on July 26, 2015, 06:36:08 PM
Alright, scratch my opinions... But hold them for our next game... I can't play today.
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Wintermoot on July 26, 2015, 06:42:31 PM
Perhaps in the future the winner of each game should determine the map options for the next game. This will make the games more varied and keep games from all using the same settings...and give an incentive to win, or at least get the most points.

They are an annoyance...

I agree.

The starting bias makes things A LOT harder for some civs... And far less so for others... And starting biases just make a lot of sense... I would be far happier if we had it...

Can someone elaborate on the start bias ?  What does this do?  I never understood it.
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Reon on July 26, 2015, 07:24:06 PM
The start bias lends certain civs to land in certain terrains...  Not all civs have a start bias (the Shoshone for example), some have start biases that are about avoiding certain terrains (Egypt avoids starting in jungle or forests), and some start on certain terrains (India has a grasslands start bias)...

These are the start biases for many of the Civs (http://civilization.wikia.com/wiki/Starting_bias_(Civ5)).

Yeah @Wintermoot I have to agree we shouldn't have start biases on.   It would put many civs at a disadvantage while others have an advantage.

Also Wintermoot you should respond on IRC faster, waiting to hear from you lol.

It's really hard to talk about this because the option is
"Disable start bias: on/off"
And I want it off so the game has start biases and he wants it on so the game doesn't...

The start bias puts people at a disadvantage.  It is very much illogical.  We never played with it on before

The start bias is a balancing mechanism of the game... It provides advantages and disadvantages across the board...
Callin' it illogical is... Well.. Absurd... By the same token not applying all the same bonus and unit advantages to every civ is illogical... Something which you would no doubt call absurd to think...

I have never seen it on.

As long as we have raging barbarians on that should be good enough, leave the start bias off.  It creates a disadvantage for a lot of people and doesn't help things.

I would love to play once I get a decent computer in September. I would have to insist playing with start bias on however, as my favourite civs to play as are Brazil and Venice, and Brazil without jungle looses its Unique Improvement and Venice without the glorious oceans looses both its Unique Unit and much of its trade advantage. I don't like raging barbs, but its not crippling.

Post by: BraveSirRobin on July 27, 2015, 03:48:19 AM
Yeah. Venice needs start bias always... Otherwise it stinks. Same thing with Netherlands (swamp) and Morrocco (desert). They need their start biases to remain competitive in game.

The game ended with a diplomatic victory for me! :)

The game was very fun, but in my opinion it went on for far two long (six hours, not including an hour-long food break). We used the default turn timer settings, but I think sitting it to 1:30 would probably be better in the future. My goal is for a game to last no longer than three or four hours.

In any case, I presume the next game will be next weekend...any date/time good for anyone?

The winner's list has been updated...Hannah won the game via Points Victory. Congrats, Hannah! :D

Based on some issues we've had with games going long, I've decided to adopt some measures in games that I host to make them go faster. From now on, there will be a ten minute "grace" period at the starting time for people to join the game, at which point games will start with whoever is there. If you don't manage to get in on time, I"m sorry, but the times are decided in advance and there's no excuse for missing. Also, I'm turning the turn timer down to 1:15 from 1:30. I hate to do this, but the purpose of having a longer timer was because some turns you just need to do more...but when someone is running out the turn timer every turn, it makes the game drastically longer. Finally, games will end after four hours...if nobody has won at that point, the person with the most points will win via point victory.

I'm glad that so many people want to play Civ, cause it's a game I love, but a game that drags out isn't as fun, and I think three hours should be a reasonable amount of time to conclude the game (with an extra hour of padding for overruns). We have people from a lot of different timezones, including later timezones, and I want for as many people to be able to play and finish our games as possible. :)

Map Type:- Pangea
Raging Barbarians:- On
Start Bias:- On

Is there anything else I would need to state or is that all fine? :P

I refuse to play any more Civ V games until I get a promise from Wintermoot that the games will only be restarted if the game's settings are incorrect. He restarted today's game because the game placed Venice in a Tundra instead of on the coast, and Crush wanted to restart because Venice can only have one city. So apparently if you have a bad start wintermoot will restart the game for you.
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Wintermoot on August 08, 2015, 07:06:19 PM
By the game mechanics, Venice is supposed to start on the coast, but it did not in this case even with start bias enabled, probably due to the small size of the map. This is an issue that nobody could have reasonably known would happen unless it'd actually happened before, so I consider that an actual game flaw. Crushita requested a restart so he could choose another civ, and seeing as it was based on a game flaw, it was only turn 6 and three out of four players were ok with it, I allowed it.

I regret that you don't agree with the decision, but given the facts at hand I stand behind it. I hope you will reconsider in the future.

Post by: Chanku on August 08, 2015, 07:27:06 PM
Actually it has been recorded as starting before. The game may or may not actually place a person with start-bias on. Start Bias isn't really 100%, it's a bias, a chance of it occurring.

(To show that Venice starting in a Tundra/Non-Optimal Location occurs)

The game ended around turn 140 with a victory for me! In fairness, it was a very close victory...I was only ahead of BraveSirRobin by 35 points, and the outcome certainly could have been different if we'd ended on another turn.

Personally I was happy with this game, because I was able to see how my new starting strategy would work out when I didn't have great terrain and didn't get the Great Library, and it was good to see that I was able to remain competitive.

In three turns I would have had both Leaning Tower of Pisa and Globe Theatre... that probably would have put me ahead again...

Ah, but you don't know what I was building ;)

Actually I don't remember what I was building, but I imagine the game would have remained competitive, especially since I was about to found more cities around Hannah's territory. Speaking of which, I think she said she probably wouldn't continue that game...she got tore up by barbarians, it seems. I suppose we could play it with Rome on AI though.
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: HannahB on August 10, 2015, 04:10:31 PM
I was getting wrecked by barbarians and rebels, I was just recovering near the end but where I had planned to expand like 40 turns before the end Wintermoot had already dominated, I have ended up "stuck in a rut". And I can't see any way for me to get out especially since Rome is about a whole Era behind Germany and Egypt...  :P

So I might miss out a revival match, but maybe I would keep going just to bug you guys :))
Either way I think Wintermoot is still up to continue the game. :)

Albionix of International Northwestern Union won today's game through both points and concession victory, proving the region's general inexperience with Civ V warfare by steamrolling over virtually everyone.

Additionally, Govindia is banned from the next four weekends of Civ for unsportsmanlike behaviour, which has already been discussed on IRC and I will not get into detail about here.

Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Govindia on August 17, 2015, 01:46:43 AM
Criticising someone's behaviour is not unsportsmanlike.  The person with the highest score going against the person with the lowest score is kind of a dick move to do.  I regard that as unsportsmanlike.

I have repeatedly requested on IRC for help in terms of practise, as an AI player is not the same against a human player with experience and skill.  It is not unreasonable for someone to help me with practise before complaining in an irrational manner that I am unsportsmanlike when I am getting frustrated because no one has offered to help me when I have directly requested it.

If anything, Wintermoot here is unsportsmanlike for not helping out new players and being unreasonable in expectations.  It is unreasonable to ban me from four weekends when no attempt was made to help me.  @Wintermoot needs to stop being defensive all the time and emotional and should be more rational rather than passive aggressive, IMHO.

As I said on IRC:
(2015-08-16 16:48:38) Govindia: I disagree with the notion that I drain the fun out of the game.   I have asked for help in this game.  I am new to this game.  The AI is not the same as an experienced human player, and that is why I have asked for help from anyone to help me in a game.  It is not unreasonable to request for a (CONT)
(2015-08-16 16:49:22) Govindia: for a human player to help me with my skills.  It is different than going up against an AI.  I have tried going up against the AI on the Prince difficulty and have failed, even in the Civil War Scenario.  I really need help and practise from a human player to help improve.
(2015-08-16 16:49:40) Govindia: If I get more experienced, I would get less frustration.

@Govindia I would suggest playing on Emperor or Diety to hone your skills.  Diety is SO hard, even when you've got experience.  It is a very good way to practice early outs and the games finish very quickly... like 1500 AD quickly.  Additionally, the key to winning Civ lies not through practice, but through mastery of the calculation algorithms.  It's just a very complex math problem, basically... which is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much myself :)

Like I said, bad joke. But then, my whole life is a bad joke, so at some point I learned to love them.

Nahh, Civil War jokes are very nice.  Which battle of the war interests you the most?

Antietam, actually. How such a big battle basically amounted to nothing just fascinates me.

Well of course you won't get better vs Prince AI... you've got to use Emperor or Diety (I have only beaten Diety AI once... and I would call it luck because it was a game with raging barbs and I was Germany...)

Robert E Lee, one of the best Confederate generals and George B McClellan, one of the worst Union generals. I'm a bit of a civil war enthusiast

I'm not sure you could call McClellan one of the worst Union generals...he wasn't much of a strategist and lacked initiative, but he was an excellent administrator and trainer, and under his watch the Army of the Potomac was whipped from a mob of volunteers to a professional army that could compete with any European army of the time. He was beloved by his men, and that's one reason he remained in charge of the army for so long.

Yes, but his terrible tactical leadership lengthened the war considerably and cost his troops dearly. It shows in the Peninsular campaign, he outnumbered Lee but was so paranoid about Confederate troop strengths (helped by his "expert intelligence consultant" Allan Pinkerton feeding him ludicrously generous enemy troop estimates) that he wasted a perfectly good opportunity to crush the Confederacy. If ALL he was remembered for was organizing the Army of the Potomac then he would be well regarded but his bumbling tactical leadership destroyed any chance of that. And that is unfortunate because your right, he was not an outright TERRIBLE general like Pope or McDowell but he is remembered as such, which is why I said one of the worst, not the outright worst.

I was referring to Prince difficulty AI.

I'll have to agree with SirRobin, playing against a Prince AI wont make you better at the game. Playing a couple of games against such an unfair advantage would be a good stepping stone against human players. That's pretty much how I learned Civ 5 and honestly, I'm still not that good at it, I've won a grand total of 1 match online. 1. I've learned not to take it to seriously.

I suppose we'll have to have a difference of opinion on McClellan, but had it not been for his skill in training and equipping the army, it would not have had the success that it did under later generals. He's far from the only Union general that floundered against Robert E. Lee's tactical and strategic mastery...even Grant only finally won at the end because he was willing to sacrifice tens of thousands of lives to press the Union's advantage in manpower and force his way through Virginia.

I wouldn't even say McDowell was a horrible general...he just had the misfortune of being first, and being given both the unrealistic expectations that came with the start of the war and an untrained mob of 90-day volunteers to fulfill them with.

But anyways...

Albiorix won tonight's game with a domination victory, although for most of the game he had more points than myself and Hannah combined, so I suppose it's an either/or victory.

In any case, the current time worked well for a lot of people in the summer, but with people going back to school it's been brought to my attention that it won't work for some going into the future...so the floor is open to changing the day and time we play. Personally, I can play either after 8PM Eastern on weekdays or anytime on Saturday or Sunday, but we'll base it on what time is best for the most people in general.

The reason why I keep dropping off the map for a while is that I keep having to cross over to Malaysia for work. My boss is in real estate and since I'm his P.A I have to join him when he goes there on business. My boss keeps crossing over because the Ringgit is in a free-fall, the value has dropped considerably and lots of Singaporeans are buying real estate through him.

Albiorix won last night's game via point victory after he had to leave and everyone else decided to end the game at that point, although at the point he left the game he was going for a culture victory.

For next-week, we've decided to shake things up a bit and do the one-city challenge! Being limited to one city, players will need to plot the most efficient route to achieve their victory and to prevent their opponents from getting there first. Should be an interesting game.

Basically as long as the start time isn't past 20:00 BST on Sunday I am alright... ^-^

So I guess I could suggest Sunday at 14:00 Eastern time? How's that for everyone?

And one city challenge is the challenge where each human civ can only have one city...

I won by points victory tonight in the one-city challenge, a game that saw a lot of AIs pop up due to players leaving. :P

Don't forget, our games will be moving to Saturdays at 4PM Eastern beginning with the next game!

I won via point victory against Reon in our first Saturday game!

Since we were the only ones playing, we decided to do a skermish map with random civs...I got Carthage and he got Brazil. It was a pretty quick game...I was about 15 turns away from cultural victory anyway. :P

We'll do it again next Saturday!

You guys had a Civ game without me, sacrilege! :)) OK, just kidding :) sounds like it was fun.

I am wondering though, what time it was on Saturday? So I can see if I could make it for a game next week, I was at a party this (last) week and that doesn't happen very often :P so I will be there next time. ^-^

Hannah won via point victory against me and North in the latest game.

From my end, my performance was pretty much shit...I struggled with barbarians for 30 turns, had to take out 15 turns to build units it handle them, and ran into every problem from lack of gold to unhappiness. I didn't even get a religion founded until 1500, and just...every incompetency imaginable. It was a fun game, but I should've turned in a better performance...

Next game will be next Saturday at the same time. :)

But in fairness you haven't been playing MP games for the last year like I have. :P

I think my issue is that I'm focusing too much on wonders...I'm going to have to take a hard look at the wonder list and determine which ones I really want to pursue and which ones aren't worth the time I could be constructing buildings and units...

Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: HannahB on October 04, 2015, 01:04:31 AM
I don't have Skype, but I've found the Steam messenger Voice Chat function usually works fine, and is easier to manage due to the ability to open it up in Shift-Tab :)

Anyway the game: I thought I did pretty well for once :D I have practised quite a bit and have a reasonable build order set-up in my head now, so I try to see what the other players are doing and adapt my strategy to cut them off a bit... :P Sure it's a little meaner than how I normally play, but the more competitive style I have found has benefited the way I play quite a bit. :-\

Also about the Wonders Wintermoot, that last game might have been a bad example, I had a population lead in my capital, and was watching to see what you normally aim to build and tried to cut you off with that :P so that may have clouded how you saw it there. ^-^

You played a good game, but you didn't make me run out of gold or go into unhappiness...those are issues with my own fundamental game. I also think I waited too long to definitely deal with the barbarians, which I just got unlucky with this time around.

Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: HannahB on October 20, 2015, 05:21:01 PM
I'm afraid I have been really busy recently, but its been personal stuff, in reality I can't really feasibly make the old Sunday time for the foreseeable future... However I should theoretically be able to make the Saturday occasionally, as such I would personally like it to remain on Saturday...

Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Wintermoot on October 20, 2015, 08:54:55 PM
I don't think there's enough interest to do two games a weekend, and to be honest I wouldn't want to host and play the same game two nights in a row. We would need a lot more people to make that work I think...

Would making the games earlier on Sunday be better, or would Saturday still be preferred (or earlier on Saturday?)

Tonight's game was won by HannahB by the new concession victory type...literally, she was the last player left in the game, with everyone else having to leave for various reasons. In particular, sorry again to Gerrick...I didn't notice you were gone until long after you'd been disconnected. =/

Edit: Also, there were some people that requested we have the game later...if you want to reschedule the game to a time you know you'll be there, we need to know that as soon as possible, preferably at least a day before. That way I can announce the new time far enough ahead that everyone will see it.

Yea, right around after Wintermoot had to leave, cousins came over, I had to have dinner, and I had to watch a movie with them, so I just had no time after, I did take Elephantine if you were wondering Wintermoot :3

Also maybe next game can we try doing all random civs? It'd be nice to mix it up :P

Kk, and sometimes could we maybe try themed games? Such as modern-day civs(any map is fine),European civs on the Europe map, sea-faring civs on islands or archipelago, etc.

Also I do agree, the AI does tend to do stupid things (https://wintreath.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwintreath.com%2Fforums%2FSmileys%2Fnewdefault%2Fazn.gif&hash=033307988d70c2a6b20aa9b33979b763)

I know, just some civs are rarely used and I tend to like variety when playing civ(https://wintreath.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwintreath.com%2Fforums%2FSmileys%2Fnewdefault%2Fazn.gif&hash=033307988d70c2a6b20aa9b33979b763)

I think the main concern with random civs was that someone would get a bad one for the map that would screw them over before the game even started.

Occasionally I'm home for the weekends, recently it just hasn't worked out that way. The only reasons I'm gone are band trips (which are mostly done now), and I visit family on the other side of the state quite often. I also visit the city I used to live in sometimes and hang out with friends, which is where I'm headed this weekend.  :)

I checked in, I have a haircut at 2, expected for it to finish by 3:30(including other family members). I'm not sure what the traffic would be like, so would it be fine if we started about 10-30 minutes later?

I most likely won't as I have to go home for my wife's family Christmas party thing today. And afterwards I'd most likely go to my mom's house where the internet connection is god awful.

We ended up not recording a winner for the last game, because it crashed around turn 35 and we were unable to get the save to work. Civ multiplayer can suck sometimes. =/

Post by: Barnes on January 24, 2016, 07:54:50 PM
I feel bad because I should've stayed up the whole night seeing the game to completion. It's not often that I get to join a game with you guys due to the fact that I work pretty much exclusively on Saturdays and Sundays now, so it's a shame that I ended up quitting early.

I know next week I can play starting at the normal time, I believe; I think I have off of work for once. And I hope in a few weeks that I can be able to stay up later than last night's game if necessary, but I may be taking a trip up to Michigan one of those days, so I'm not quite so sure.

Again, though: congratulations to Gerrick and Wintermoot for playing a fantastic game... I'm not sure how ended other than spectacularly...

Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Wintermoot on January 31, 2016, 04:22:56 AM
Even though it was just Gerrick and I, we managed to have our game today! And even better, we were able to play it through to the end, and at the end I managed a diplomatic victory.

Duels are always so interesting in Civ...just you and your opponent, on a small map, scrambling to get advantage from the start. It's definitely a different dynamic than normal games...
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Barnes on January 31, 2016, 04:47:28 AM
I'm glad you were able to complete it, and in a timely manner too, mostly because I didn't delay the start of the match :P
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Wintermoot on January 31, 2016, 04:55:41 AM
I wouldn't say that was it. :P

Duel maps are just much smaller, so not as many cities and not as many things to have to manage each turn. I don't think there was a single turn that took more than a minute or two, except once when I had to take a quick break. :)
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Gerrick on January 31, 2016, 05:02:20 AM
Haha well the game is very much different with just two players. I'm gonna say diplomatic victory is some bull though :P
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Wintermoot on January 31, 2016, 05:21:07 AM
It is easier with only two players, but it's a strategy you have to aim for, or at least work toward, for the entire game.

The key to diplomatic victory is city-state allies, so you have to emphasize gold production in order to buy influence...that means making sure you've got as many caravans as you can and you're working on markets, banks, etc. You also have to invest in the Patronage tree, especially so you can build Forbidden Palace once you discover Banking, and then begin the long quest to get your religion and ideology recognized as official so you can score additional delegates. It's more difficult with more players that will work against you, but it's not easy in any game. :P
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Barnes on January 31, 2016, 05:27:59 AM
*marks down notes so I can counter Wintermoot's strategy and finally beat him at his own game*
Title: Regional Civilization V Games
Post by: Wintermoot on January 31, 2016, 05:51:51 AM
That is far from my only strategy...I pursue several strategies and then focus them down as the game goes on and I can see what other players are doing. :P

I'd be interested as well. Saturday works best for me this weekend since my wife will be gone for the night.

I think the Civ games started to fall off because the revived werewolf games started to dominate the Amalyan Quarter, so people are less likely to notice new posts on this thread. Perhaps if Civ got its own board, it might get more attention?

I've noticed quite a few new citizens saying they'd be interested in playing, so we could try reeling them in.

Glory to our great people, the Inca!

After a well played game against our enemies, the heathens Crushita of the Potato Papacy (Venice), xXTheHydraXx of Greece, HannahB of Babylon, and Wintermoot of Egypt, we emerged victorious!

Our world was that of a small Earth. Our great empire was founded in western Russia and expanded south and west to control most of the European continent. Crushita's Potato Papacy controlled most of Southeast Asia, xXTheHydraXx's Greece controlled eastern Siberia, HannahB's Babylon controlled most of North America, and Wintermoot's Egypt controlled the eastern Sahara.

Our lands had very few hills, making our unique improvement, the terrace farm, very underutilized and our unique ability not as helpful. To seemingly make up for this though, our lands were bountiful in a vast array of luxury resources, allowing us to settle more cities. The extra happiness gave us several golden ages, further increasing our production, gold income, and culture. We declared friendship with both the Potato Papacy and Greece, and all was well.

Over time, our religion grew and became the largest in the entire world. It spread to our southern neighbor, Egypt, and across Europe and Asia. Other civilizations founded their pagan beliefs, but they were worshiped nowhere outside their own lands. The tithes followers paid to our empire filled our coffers and supplied us with the gold needed to train and maintain a large standing army.

After both Wintermoot and HannahB retired from the game due to the time and other obligations, their civilizations were taken control of by the AI. This seemed an advantageous time to expand our empire to the Egyptian capital of Thebes, which was protected by a minuscule army. Thanks to the earlier strategic buying of land to the north and east of Egypt, we captured Thebes in just two turns with our catapults and crossbowmen. We sued for peace with the weak Egypt since we only wanted Thebes, but they would not accept.

Little did we know that the treacherous Crushita and xXTheHydraXx were plotting against us. Just after we captured Thebes, the two declared war for our apparent "warmongering". If they had only prepared before going to war, they might have captured a couple of our cities since our army was spread out and Thebes was still burning from the siege. They did not, however, and war changed turns from simultaneous to sequential. Our numerous cities and large army caused our turns to be much longer than their tiny empires, and they grew restless as they built their armies. They called for a temporary peace to switch back to simultaneous turns until they were ready to attack. We graciously accepted their pleas.

During this short time, we were able to negotiate a peace with Egypt, triple the size of our army, and raise a large navy. We would be fighting a two front war, but we had the largest military in the world and strong defensive positions, so we did not worry. The Potato Papacy was going to attack Thebes by coming up the Red Sea with its large navy and bombarding the city with several of their unique unit, the Great Galleass. To combat this, we filled the Red Sea with triremes and stationed crossbowmen along the coasts of Arabia and the Horn of Africa. Greece was going to attack our capital, Cuzco, from the east with its large army of chariot archers, catapults, swordsmen, and their unique unit, Companion Cavalry. To combat this, we stationed several pikemen and crossbowmen near Cuzco to keep the mounted units at bay.

Finally, the time for peace was over and war returned to our lands. Crushita attacked first but quickly found that our legions of crossbowmen destroyed their ships faster than they could destroy our triremes. XXTheHydraXx attacked next, but our armies were dug in deep during the defense and made strong counterattacks that repelled the Greek horde. Soon after the war had started, the two backstabbing heathen civilizations surrendered.

The might of our military and the strength of our empire was unmatched, and it took war for them to find out. Let it be known that we recognize the admirable attempts our enemies made to try to defeat us in both peace and war (Crushita was playing Venice and xXTheHydraXx had a shit start), but our empire was just better in almost every way (save population and technology). For these reasons, our enemies conceded to our great empire, and we took the victory!

Fun game! Let's do it again! :D

Because Gerrick did not mention the Glory of the Potato enough, may the world know of it!

The Potato Papacy was the largest city in the world, her splendor was unmatched, her wonders were bountiful and glorious! Our trade routes stretched the world and our faith was truly great! The heathens of course did not want our faith, but they could have the silly faith spread by the Inca, the Great Potato would repay them in time. Our technology was so great that we nearly eclipsed the great Babylonians to the east (Though such a task was rather hard due to them being, well, Babylon.)

For many years we laboured to build a great navy, unfortunately, us Potatoes are not war-like people and we soon found our navy floundered in the Red Sea. Now of course we could have won in time, but in the end, due to lack of time we gratefully ceded victory to them, though time would have shown that Venice is the greatest of Civilizations!

______________________________________________________________________________
I could have won if I wasn't a lazy bugger :P

Great fun though, we must do that again!

By turn 10, I knew that I was in trouble. :P

For being the only person to start in their Civ's real-life starting position, that position was...just not great, with a lot of plain and desert tiles, so my first order of business was to produce a worker to try to make something of where I was...except that I got caught off-guard and it was promptly captured by barbarians. I eventually managed to get it back, perhaps beating Gerrick to it in the process (I saw that scout right next to the camp my worker was in...), but by then I was pretty far behind and was just focusing on catching up. To my credit, by the time I had to leave I was only 20 points behind the next lowest player, and even managed to build one wonder. :P

In fairness though, I made some mistakes too...in addition to losing my worker, when I saw how bad my position was I should have skipped the competition to build the Great Library and focused on granary and water mill for the bonus food and production, and then competed with Crushita for Hanging Gardens. Afterwards, I should've focused research towards Currency so I could build Petra, and from there my starting position probably wouldn't have been that bad.

competed with Crushita for Hanging Gardens.
Some people rush the Great Library, as Venice, I always rush the Hanging Gardens for that sweet extra food to quickly grow my one and only true city.

There is no competing with me :P

Anyone want to play a game on Saturday evening? I'm looking for hopefully at least a few people in case some people have to quit early/have connection problems/end up unable to play. I don't know what time I'll get done with work tomorrow, but I'm shooting for being ready at 5ish? I'll be able to play all night if others want to, too.

I'll mention a bunch of people who have commented in this thread at some point:
@Wintermoot
@HannahB
@Eldarion
@xXTheHydraXx
@Rasdanation
@BraveSirRobin
@Govindia
@North
@Chanku
@Evelynx
@Hugsim
@Barnes

Plus anyone else who might be interested.

That's EDT, but yeah 5 if that works best with everyone. I'm not sure if I'll be able to any earlier than that -- just depends on how the day goes -- but I could give an update around noonish as to when I'd get done if that'd help.

Yeah, it's the same laptop I've always played on. But I got it to work. :)

In case anyone else ever gets this problem, I went to Steam, right clicked on Civ V in my library, clicked "Properties", clicked on the "Local Files" tab, then clicked "Verify Integrity of Game Cache". I don't really know what that did, but Civ launched fine afterwards.

Today sounds good to start the game. We can continue/finish it tomorrow. I hope that is satisfactory to all y'all?

Also could I get everyone's Steam so that I know what Names to expect? I will fire up the game around 1:30 or 2:00 depending on outside interference over here. Or sooner If everyone responds.

My Steam is Presagio di morte.

It may even be around fourish because I have to help move furniture.

I know this is technically about Civ V but I was wondering if anyone else has Civ VI and what they hink of it. I'm having a hard time with it, myself.

It takes a bit to get used to but I find gunning for science first is the most advantageous move. Other than that I like Civ VI.

I've found Civ VI to be a slower-paced game that requires more thought than previous editions...it's no longer possible to viably pursue every or even most courses to victory, so you have to pick the one you want to go for and make decisions based on that.

Do you have any tips about strategy or the game in general?

Thanks!

My tips are to explore the different civs and experience their different playstyles until you find one you like the most. As well as to keep your eye on gold and happiness while playing.

My personal favorite civ is the Inca due to how their unique ability affects gold income and movement speed, but you'd need a DLC to play them. Out of default civs I like how Rome plays with early war and expansion while still being able to hold their own in the later eras.

Egypt is good for a wonder game, Attila is good for pretty much any military gameplay.

But it is still a good idea to explore the different Civs and experience how they handle in order to find your ideal playstyle.

BNW or base game culture victory?

Post by: Wintermoot on June 11, 2017, 01:45:57 AM
I'm pretty sure we were using BNW.

To be fair though, technical issues plagued players and at the end it was just me and Gatto. I was lucky to get an excellent starting position and not be harassed much by barbarians, so by the time Gatto and his friend had dealt with their barbarian problem I was already online and cranking things out.

Civ V still sucks ass when it comes to having stable multiplayer games, though.

When I said it sucks ass, I was mostly talking about the fact that it crashes and then people have a hard time rejoining, not the actual gameplay. :P

Do those mods improve the stability?

Obviously not very good.

I think the 16th sounds good to me, I’ll just have to tell my boss that maybe he should have me learn how to run breakfast that day.

So I’ll have to get back to you guys on that in a couple days.

I’ll do my best to set one up before the end of the year but it might not happen. I just want to set one for after I get my new desktop.

Still not sure if I want to join... never played Civ online before, forgot it was an option, but I suspect that my play style may not be well liked because I can get vengeful sometimes when someone wrongs me, so I may be like, hmm, I think I'll try a pacifist Science victory this time... and then someone puts a city on the Silver resource I wanted one turn before I could get it and now I have nothing to do with my Settler that I wasted 8 turns on, and then it's like, well, I guess I'm going for a Domination victory now, starting with completely razing the civilization that took my Silver resource.
Actually having trouble getting the achievements in Civ 6 for other victory types because I keep accidentally destroying the other civilizations before getting a victory other than domination which makes it not count, even though it's entirely their fault for being in my way, denouncing me, using a spy on me, being ahead of me in points, or taking my Silver resources. I like Silver.

I have a small amount of experience playing Civ 5 and even less playing multiplayer Civ 5.  The one time that I did play multiplayer I got squished very quickly.  Would a team mode game be a possibility?

Domination is fun tho. I personally play tall but I do enjoy a good militaristic opponent.

Teams? I’ve never played team multiplayer before but I would have no problem doing one.

Are DLC any trouble to you guys or no? Although I prefer to use all DLC due to my main being the Inca, I have no issue not using some.

I do not have a problem with the DLC or the expansions.  Since I am new to Civ as a whole I have had to read up a bit on the game to understand what the heck is going on.  Civilization is significantly different from the Command & Conquer that I am used to.
I would not understand that team mode though so I would need an explanation.
Also how would I find the game once it was ready?  Would I be able to drop in or would I need some kind of "appointment"?

Team mode is the same, it just allows players to form up into teams so that they play together against the other ones. Each player gets their own civilization, but you basically just work together with the other players on your team.
Whomever is the host or already in the game would send you an invite through Steam.

So I got scheduled to work on the 16th unfortunately. As I also have to finish my Christmas shopping that day I will be unable to host a game. As I don't know how many of you would be willing to spend precious days of your winter break/vacation I'll leave the option to do one in that period open for you guys that I can host, as I will be taking quite a few of those days off.

So if anyone is willing to join a game in that period of time, I'm more than happy to host.

I'm off work until the 2nd, so for the most part I should be available, though Fridays probably won't be good for me, and I can't promise I'll end up doing some Christmas things at some points during the break.
