Robert E Lee, one of the best Confederate generals and George B McClellan, one of the worst Union generals. I'm a bit of a civil war enthusiast.

  • @Govindia I would suggest playing on Emperor or Diety to hone your skills.  Diety is SO hard, even when you've got experience.  It is a very good way to practice early outs and the games finish very quickly... like 1500 AD quickly.  Additionally, the key to winning Civ lies not through practice, but through mastery of the calculation algorithms.  It's just a very complex math problem, basically... which is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much myself :)

Like I said, bad joke. But then, my whole life is a bad joke, so at some point I learned to love them.

Nahh, Civil War jokes are very nice.  Which battle of the war interests you the most?

Well of course you won't get better vs Prince AI... you've got to use Emperor or Diety (I have only beaten Diety AI once... and I would call it luck because it was a game with raging barbs and I was Germany...)

I'm not sure you could call McClellan one of the worst Union generals...he wasn't much of a strategist and lacked initiative, but he was an excellent administrator and trainer, and under his watch the Army of the Potomac was whipped from a mob of volunteers to a professional army that could compete with any European army of the time. He was beloved by his men, and that's one reason he remained in charge of the army for so long.

Yes, but his terrible tactical leadership lengthened the war considerably and cost his troops dearly. It shows in the Peninsular campaign, he outnumbered Lee but was so paranoid about Confederate troop strengths (helped by his "expert intelligence consultant" Allan Pinkerton feeding him ludicrously generous enemy troop estimates) that he wasted a perfectly good opportunity to crush the Confederacy. If ALL he was remembered for was organizing the Army of the Potomac then he would be well regarded but his bumbling tactical leadership destroyed any chance of that. And that is unfortunate because your right, he was not an outright TERRIBLE general like Pope or McDowell but he is remembered as such, which is why I said one of the worst, not the outright worst.

I was referring to Prince difficulty AI.

I'll have to agree with SirRobin, playing against a Prince AI wont make you better at the game. Playing a couple of games against such an unfair advantage would be a good stepping stone against human players. That's pretty much how I learned Civ 5 and honestly, I'm still not that good at it, I've won a grand total of 1 match online. 1. I've learned not to take it to seriously.

  • I suppose we'll have to have a difference of opinion on McClellan, but had it not been for his skill in training and equipping the army, it would not have had the success that it did under later generals. He's far from the only Union general that floundered against Robert E. Lee's tactical and strategic mastery...even Grant only finally won at the end because he was willing to sacrifice tens of thousands of lives to press the Union's advantage in manpower and force his way through Virginia.

I wouldn't even say McDowell was a horrible general...he just had the misfortune of being first, and being given both the unrealistic expectations that came with the start of the war and an untrained mob of 90-day volunteers to fulfill them with.

    But anyways...

Civ on Sunday at the same time...anyone in? :P
