Politics in Wintreath

  • Hello everyone. I am a new member to Wintreath and wanted to see if I could try and enhance the politics that goes on here. I understand that a sense of community is the most important aspect of this region and I don't want to change that.

My idea would be to expand on the idea of recognised 'Houses' in the land.

A set number of Houses (5-10 say) could be allowed to exist. When new members join, they join one of these houses, who have internal community and politics going on within themselves, with a leader.

As the region is a monarchy, Houses could battle with each other and work together to have control of the main offices of state.

    Just a thought.

  • First of all welcome...We are happy to have you here...

Well as far as I know, we have no Magna Carta here, so the full authority remains to Wintermoot.
This would be a lovely idea though, sounds like the world of Harry Potter...New members choose a house, internal rules...and blah blah blah :)

  • Hmm.
We have a houses system that is growing, but it is mainly for Roleplay means. We intend to grow it and with Ghant pushing more IC stuff we might keep it growing for Wintreath Roleplay material.
The thing with what you are suggesting, and I hate to point this out again, is that this creates division. This region was created because of the political division and strife in Spiritus. What you are suggesting could be fun, and I could be wrong and everyone would just do IC things and still be nice to each other. However, I must say that there will always be someone who will come along and ruin this. I think we could use the House system in roleplays, but most of our politics attempt to be non-divisive and as non-competitive as possible.
A little breakdown of our political system might help explain why houses is a bad idea.
We have the executive branch, composed of the monarchy and the Riksrad cabinet. This is the king and his advisors and his ministers. Integration gets members; Culture works on RPs; Defense works on our regional military; FA works on our relations with other regions; WA on our regional vote on WA proposals; and Information on our regional announcements, Orendi, etc. The king presides over this and though the Riksrad is given a large degree of freedom, if the king does not want something to be done or does want something to be done, the Riksrad must do so.
The Overhusen is appointed by the king as well, but their only job is to vote on legislation that the Underhusen drafts and passes.
The Underhusen is elected and drafts bills proposed by members of the Underhusen or proposed in the Citizen's Platform. Once these bills are drafted, edited and voted on, and they pass, the Overhusen looks over them.

As you can see, there really isn't a politics game here. We are all working for one thing, and that is to make Wintreath a safe and welcoming region.
I do not oppose your idea if you want to run an RP.
But I do oppose it in our regional government. Wintermoot holds power overall and he wouldn't enjoy infighting, even for 'fun'. The thing with infighting, or any 'playfighting' is that it would eventually lead the region to real infighting. This system would create grudges and resentment and we cannot have a government that works on that. We do not have political parties and we shouldn't because then lines get drawn and people have to choose sides. In the Underhusen and the Overhusen every member votes on their own inclinations, not because their party is voting one way or another, but because they find something wrong with the bill that needs to be fixed, or because they liked the bill.
Once again, I will say, you can start an RP if you wish to have face-offs between houses, but I think that this region does not need the infighting that houses would create.

  • In addition, to create a regulated system like this you would have to pass a law and/or amend the constitution, which means you would have to pass it through the Underhusen and the Overhusen.
I know for a fact that, due to the political clusterfuck that happened in Spiritus, the region that the founders of Wintreath left to create Wintreath, this bill would probably not pass the Underhusen and would definitely not pass the Overhusen.

    That is all.

  • The thing is, nobody just ups and decides to have a divisive, drama-laden community...it happens slowly, bit by bit, over the course of time. You have groups that form within a community, you have falling outs, you have decisions and events that divide people, and mix that in with politics, which is competitive by nature, and eventually there you have it. Obviously, we can't prevent all those things from happening, but our region is set up to allow us to go in a firm, steady direction with input from the Citizens of the region. It's spawned a wonderful community that gets along and is more interested in fun than pursuing political agendas.

And ultimately, there are plenty of political regions out there. I think our community focus helps make us special as a region. :)

I don't think there's anything broken with the way our region runs, so I'm not inclined to try to fix it.

Yes... sorry I came off as a bit of a jerk >.>
It's a bit of a touchy idea though. If you would start an RP for it, which involved taking control of a fictional side of Wintreath, but not the actual gameplay political side, I would join :)

Indeed we do. If you are interested, I can go into detail. It has it's pros and cons, but so far there has been no real infighting. I like it.
