You can almost hear the older folks thinking
"Young people ruining something else." So few young people are drinking alcohol in Japan that the government is organizing a competition to find new ways to get young people drinking. The article notes that while 30% of people in their 40s-60s drink three or more days a week, only about 8% of people in their 20s do. This means less tax money from liquior, which has gone from 5% of overall tax revenue in 1980 to just 1.7% last year.
So the solution is apparently to get young people drinking again. xD
Maybe next year we can get people to take up smoking again, get those taxes back up.
