Lately I've been researching VPNs, whether I need one, and which one to choose. I've decided that it'd be a good to get one for my phone and work laptop if nothing else, but I'm still looking into which specific one is right for me. I'm considering NordVPN or ExpressVPN at the moment.

I thought it might help to see if anyone here used a VPN, and if so which one? Do you like the one you're using? Would you recommend it?

I've only ever used free ones solely for watching BBC, CBC, etc. which of course are all sketchy and should be turned off the instant you're not using them. And also company VPNs for work from home.

I used one when I lived in the city since I download a lot, and I believe it was called GhostVPN.  Comcast is a super touchy company when it comes to what you do on their networks, so it's pretty much required.

I don't use one up in the mountains, though.  I still download a lot, but Viasat so far has been incredibly relaxed on that kind of stuff.  But when I go back to the city, I'll definitely more than likely invest in one again.

Thankfully my ISP is small and doesn't really care what I do. At school I usually just stream or find Mega/Google Drive downloads.

I use a work VPN, but I don't think it does much for privacy and security beyond being needed to access the network. Otherwise I've never used one, but I'm thinking that I should for my phone and work laptop too. Because I'm on a limited data plan, I tend to use the local wifi when I'm on the internet and that's one specific case where a VPN is supposed to make you more secure. I've also thought that I might be doing work from places other than home in the future too, and that'd be nice to have.

Since my first post, ExpressVPN has apparently been purchased by a company with a shady adware history, so that may be why they're pushing out ads. Their CIO is also alleged to have violated US hacking laws by providing the United Arab Emirates technology to help them spy on dissidents and human rights activists.

For those reasons, I wouldn't recommend ExpressVPN. Technically they still seem on the up and up, but it makes me uncomfortable knowing that the people leading it aren't steeped in the privacy principles you'd expect people running a VPN would have.

Well my post was before the purchase, but one of my favorite youtubers used to advertise them in his videos on occasion.  Though I don't believe he has since their recent acquisition.

And yeah, the fact it's a company that was known for distributing malware gave me all the hesitancy of ever getting it.  Those are just icing on the cake on why I'd never currently touch it or any other VPNs that they own.
