How to Stop Overthinking

    A lot of us have issues with overthinking things, to the point that it can cause anxiety and depression. Traditionally the way this has been handled in therapy is with cognitive behaviour therapy, where you focus on the thoughts to challenge them or transform them into something better or more realistic. However, this article suggests that metacognitive therapy, or simply letting go of the thoughts and not dwelling on them, can be more successful. In a nutshell, it goes on to state that you can't control trigger thoughts (or thoughts that draw our attention) but we can control whether or not we engage with them.

    It was a fascinating article with strategies on how to handle negative trigger thoughts without falling into the trap of avoiding situations that cause them altogether, so I thought I'd post it here for anyone who has an issue with overthinking or dwelling on negative thoughts. :)

  • @Alturismo: One of the mantras that keep popping up as I explore more about mental health is that you can't control your thoughts/feelings, but you can control your reaction to them. In many ways, that's what therapy is...someone helping you learn techniques to mitigate or cope with the thoughts and feelings you have. If anything, there's a growing body of evidence that your actions can have an impact on your emotions just as much as your emotions can have an impact on your actions (if you let them).
