  • While we're waiting for the next game, I thought it'd be fun to see which side everyone preferred to play on and why...wolf or villager?

  • I think overall I prefer villager, just because there isn't the same amount of pressure...your role is to survive and try to figure things out, while the wolves do all the manipulating and stuff. One thing I do like about being on the wolves' side though is that it's a team effort...you get to see all the wolves' insights and thoughts and collaborate on what the best move to make is.

  • On balance, I think I prefer being a wolf, because I'm then essentially responsible for my death (since I have, oh, 80% of the information in the game, outside of 'specific person is Blocker, Seer, etc.').
Either I've overplayed my hand and revealed myself, or we haven't been aggressive enough in purging power roles.
This is, of course, after finally having been able to play a few games as villager; if you'd asked around WW18 or something I'd probably have said 'I have no fucking clue, I've been villager, like, once'.

  • I think I prefer being a wolf or neutral player to being a villager.  That sense of ambiguity is nice when being neutral since you can choose who to align with more than as a villager or wolf and others may trust to share information with you. (although my only experience being neutral is from Town of Salem)

But I agree with Doc that being a wolf is pretty fun.  The main reason for that is because of the night actions that are probably going to make some sort of a difference in the game (even if that difference is making it obvious to other players that I am a wolf :P).  Like Wintermoot I also like the team effort aspect of being a wolf.  I think I have also developed a liking for being manipulative in the game. :))

  • I am rubbish at being a wolf, but it's also the most challenging for me, personally. It's hard to choose.

On the one hand, I am a complete liability to my team as a Wolf, since I am practically always the first scan choice. If it's a game where some sort of mechanic blocks the scan from being successful, like back in Until Dawn, then Wolf is my preferred side, as I love playing those mind games and making the Town a paranoid, fearful mess. I also just overplay my hand sometimes, as I would honestly prefer to take a more back-seat approach, but would get called out immediately, since my town style is so confrontational and aggressive.

I also get fatigued from having to put up the facade necessary to play wolf, and my conscience eventually gets the better of me.

  • Personally I don't find playing a wolf to be stressful, because I try to play the day rounds exactly the same whether I'm a wolf or a villager. It really helps being part of a team though...having a team to come to consensuses with really plays into my style, compared to playing the spy in Spyfall where you're on your own.

Makes me wonder if we could have multiple spies working together in future Spyfall games if they had enough players. :P

@Laurentus: That reminds me of the exchange you had with Aragonn a few games ago, the one that led you to being voted off and exposed as a wolf. As the turn went on, it just seemed like your competitiveness and aggressiveness in trying to get him voted off became out of character. It was one of the things that made me and others feel that something was wrong and led us to changing course.

I don't necessarily find it more fun to be a wolf. Rather, I find it less stressful - because you're not operating under as much information asymmetry and so know exactly who your friends and enemies are - so you'll never wind up in a situation where your erstwhile teammates backstab you because you said one thing somewhat weird and everyone overanalyzed it (except in a bus play, and usually every wolf can see those coming and, often, suggest them).
No such confidence in a villager game.
Maybe it's just a desire for control, in which case being a wolf gives me a lot more of it. I'm more responsible for my own failures, and as a corollary, more responsible for any victories I should win as a result (except in cases where the whole forest burns down, not that I'm talking about anyone in particular, Silv).

  • Between the two choices, I usually prefer being the wolf.  I tend to find both equally stressful especially when the heat is on me, but at the very least I get to have more fun as the wolf...even if like last game I was in my enjoyment of it ends up being a red flag to players who know my usual style.

That being said, I generally enjoy hosting the most because it's like being this big kid version of god watching as their people are fighting and tearing at each other to find out who the bad guys are while knowing the entire time who everyone is and just enjoying the show.  It's also more fun because with each new game, I can find new ways to throw even more mind games at people to throw them off, and I generally just feel more in my element in this spot.

  • @Michi: It sounds like you have fun designing and watching people go at it, but I've always imagined the work behind running a WW game is enormous...the host is the one that has to keep up with all the chaos while making sure things are within the rules of the game. Is that an aspect you like as well or is it something you tolerate because you like the other aspects?

To be honest, the creativity part is what I like the most.  Writing up the flavor during each bit is what I enjoy the most, and seeing everyone get into it and enjoying it is pretty much my favorite part.  Realistically, if there was a way where I could do that and let someone else handle the rules and overall progression, I'd do it in a heartbeat since it's the GP part I generally struggle with in some way.

  • This is a question that I would have answered diferently if you asked me say, 2 years ago.

I used to love wolfing, and hated with a burning passion when I rolled town, specially vanilla villager

because I liked more the idea of fooling the thread faster than they can realize what I'm doing

and that's still fun and all but then someone told me something that sticked to me after a very BAD town game

werewolf is a game where you will statistically roll town more often, so you are half a player if your only focus and/or enjoyment comes from playing wolf

so I reset and tried to up my town/wolf hunting skills, and I find myself enjoying more dunking on wolves than playing as them

I also feel like it is harder to read intent than to fool the thread so improving in that aspect feels awesome looking back :3
