I have been thinking, and now might be a good time to establish a regional currency by updating the Monarch's Game Bag. Currently, people are given points for various reasons which they can spend on games. If a game costs under $10 USD, it costs 2 points. Otherwise, it costs 4. I propose to modify the cost to cost/10. For example, a $10 game would only cost one point, while a $40 game would cost 4. Games would become a bit cheaper under this scenario, but at this point we have a huge list of available games to justify it.

Some years ago, the community decided to name the regional currency the krone, but we could have a new vote to decide on a name as well.

From there we could build onto the system in the future, but this would be an easy change because it's basically what we're already doing.

I don't see an issue with it. I already have my currency named the krone, so it works well

My only worry would be the pricing busywork of games.  It's easy enough going off of the general base price at the time...but say some games go on sale?  An example being that the Dead Island collection digitally is 44.97 before tax on Steam (or 19.99 for each main game and 4.99 for Retro Rampage).  But right now until the end of the day, the collection can be picked up for 10.65 on Steam.

Another example would be the Bioshock Anniversary Collection which is normally 60 bucks digitally, but I was able to get it on sale on GoG for 20 bucks some time ago.

Will this new points change be reflecting sales that go on?  Or will they strictly follow the normal base price?

Personally, to avoid the hell of busywork and since it's not actual money but points for just doing stuff, I think it should strictly follow the normal base price...and maybe on occasion we can have our own point specials on games where we drop the required points between 1-3 for the higher value games.  That way we don't have to continuously keep up on sales to make sure the point values match the current price if we're going by the 1 point per 10$ setup.

@Michi: In a way, we already do that with games under $10 being 2 points and games over being 4. As with now, it would be based off the base price on Steam.

Is the krone cost being rounded up or down?

And are you suggesting a direct 1:1 conversion from existing points to kroner? At first I was worried that the value of points would be deflated, but based on what you're saying it sounds like you want to do the opposite?

Also, the thought of a currency backed by literal video game copies is hilarious and I love it.

Right.  My only worry was that putting it based off of the current price in the sense of sales would make what is currently easily simple into a complex chore since Steam sales happen all the time.

Base price only would thankfully be much less of a chore to upkeep.  So I just wanted clarification as to what route you were considering on that.

@taulover: I'm not sure what you mean. If it's $10 or less, it'd be 1 krone. If it's $10.01 to $20, it'd be 2 krone and so on. I don't know that it'll be a major change, but I think we have enough games in the library that making them slightly cheaper won't be a problem. Besides that, I can think of other rewards that we can do in the future to cost crone. One thing at a time though.

@Michi: Yeah, I don't think it would be fair to me and Gerrick, my fellow game-offerer, to include sales. We have limited copies of games to give...Steam does not.

Which was why I was hoping you were going to say base price only, haha. I'm totally on board with the change, though.  I love having the points convert like that, and will make those 10 dollar games easier for people to grab.

Yeah so things becoming slightly cheaper is fine, I was worried about the opposite. (Though I think that would mean inflation, not deflation, so whoops.)
