Hi everyone, I'm so happy you could join us. Many of you know me, but did you know I'm a actually a Wintreath wildlife biologist. With the permission of the Regional Park, we will be examining and identifying the many animals and creatures that inhabit our regional park. Feel free to post some of the animals you've seen or heard about.

Kestar Deer (Odocoileus Kestarius)

Named after the Wintreath's royal family, this rare and endangered type of deer has only been seen in the wild for a few times. Poached and hunted to almost extinction, they were originally darker in color but evolution favored pure white individuals that could blend in the with the snow of the Frosty Realm of Wintreath. There is an estimated 1,000 individuals. Back in the days of old, there used to be several of these deer in the royal palace's garden. It is characterized by its pure white coat, pale blue eyes, and the fact that both genders have antlers. They normally are very picky and only seem to eat 1 type of small shrub found all over Wintreath.

Very little is known about the deer, but I found this one as a buck alone. Its mother was most likely killed and I raised it on my own, and hopefully I'll be able to find another one to mate it.

You can come pet it, but do not do this in the wild, however this deer (Arya), is used to humans.

Weeble Weevil

Named after the shrill calls the adult males produce, the Weeble Weevil is widely considered to be the most devastating pest to Wintreath's snow cotton textile industry. The adult females lay eggs inside of snow cotton bulbs for warmth, and then the larvae eat their way out. Because the weevil has an incredibly short lifespan, it produces hundreds of larvae in a very short time, causing them to quickly spread and devastate vast amounts of snow cotton fields.

Many types of insecticides have been developed to combat the presence of the weevil, but as it is unusually adaptive, no method of permanent eradication has yet been created. To curtail the weevil's spread on smaller-scale snow cotton fields, some farmers train different animals to hunt them, most commonly small birds or hornets.

Thank you Gerrick. A research team is currently studying a new treatment to get reduce the numbers of those nasty, yet natural things.

Moo Shoat (Ovis iries hircuiscis)

This strange dairy-cow shoat colored is a very common wild herbivore living on the top of Mount Himmel. A descendant of a sheep-goat hybrid that must have also met a cow down the line, its the best of both worlds. It boasts the best and most highly sought milk in all of the region and is prided for its thick wooly coat. Loved by all, this animal has been unsuccessfully domesticated for centuries. While their children may be extremely cute and found in petting zoos, they are real stubborn bloaks. They also boast some of the longest lifespans of any herbivores, the longest living for 114 years. I have known this 40 year old shoat for almost 25 years, and they rarely stay or obey, but this one, never hurts me.

Enough laughing! Its stubborness but supposed loyalty makes it one of the most coveted animals in all of Wintreath.

Great Dawcreekian Bear (Ursus Dawcreekius)

Named after it's native homeland of Dawcreek, this species of bear was the result of global warming causing the polar bear population that had inhabited the north to mass migrate down south into the vast forests of the country, interbreeding with the grizzly bear population that inhabited the forests prior to the migration.

Due to their genetic background, they're well adaptable to both cold and temperate climates and can mostly be seen roaming in the fall and winter seasons, often hibernating in the spring and warmer seasons. Great Dawcreekian bears are carnivorous, their diet being made up of mostly fish, small animals, and medium animals, allowing them to live up to a lifespan of 20-30 years. Most notable for their mixture of white and brown fur, they've since become an icon of Dawcreek, being given official status as the national animal and displayed on the Dawcreekian coat of arms.

Humming Mantid

These are an odd sight for those familiar with the animals they came from.  Because there isn't as much sunlight as other places, pollen and nectar are hard to collect and the extremely fast metabolism of hummingbirds doomed them to die quickly because of the extreme cold even when they weren't being outcompeted by Snowbees and attacked by Beeterflies.  There also are not that many small insects and generally they fly or are social, territorial, and aggressive enough that snatching individuals isn't worth the danger.  Seeing the struggles of hummingbirds and praying mantises a sympathetic scientist realizing they probably wouldn't be surviving for very long into the future decided to try to merge the animals.  Shockingly the merging succeeded in producing fertile Humming Mantids.  They keep the small size of their predecessors but combine some of their characteristics and hunting styles.  They are solely carnivores who hunt small insects like the Arachnosyte, Weeble Weevil, and sometimes hunt Beeterflies or follow those being pranked by a Betterfly to hunt the insects they disturb.

They mostly resemble the praying mantis in appearance except they have sharper teeth and claws and have small wings which flap at a similar rate to butterflies but they have kept some of the hummingbirds' agility.  Their metabolism is faster than the mantis but slower than the hummingbird enabling them to actively hunt and catch butterflies on the fly but they also will find a good perch and wait in the style of the mantis for weevils, aphids, beetles, butterflies, occasional bees, and other small insects.

An odd hunting behavior seen when they follow those being tricked by Betterflies is that they sometimes ignore the easy to grab insects disturbed by the victim of the Betterfly and instead will either catch the Betterfly or rip off small amounts of skin from the victim of the trickster and fly away to eat them.
The way they tend to hunt Beeterflies is to fly up to an individual, snatch or impale it on its claws and quickly bite it to death, and fly away before the swarm is able to respond.

They are generally a combination of green, yellow, or other rainbow colors in their appearance so that they can blend in with certain plants and flowers but they solely exist in the warmer areas of Wintreath where the snow is not everywhere.  Sometimes the ones that attack the victims of a Betterfly transmit parasites but generally Humming Mantids are not a threat to humans.  Some have even been tamed and will follow their owner while protecting them from any Arachnosites, Beeter and Betterflies they can catch.

Riksrad Sharse (Equus Chondrictythis cabinetis)
An odd combination of the traditional shark and horse, this variety of Sharse was named in honor of the cabinet of Wintreath, which was brutally eaten by one of these in the early days of Wintreath. Known for their speed, agility, and rambunctious diet, these can be seen prying through the forests with their razor sharp teeth. Interestingly, they lay huge eggs similar to their ancestors sharks but raise their children by milk similar to that of mammals and horses. Living very long lives, they are the main culprits to supposed shark attacks. No one has ever dare ridden or milked these animals, and if someone has, they have never lived to tell the tale. However, most sharses are quite shy and will only attack when provoked. The riksrad sharses are said to have developed a craving of human flesh, especially flesh from members of the Wintrean government. Beware!

Feathered Lizard (Lacertillas avis)

One of the most ancient animals in our region that and a "living fossil" that has virtually stayed the same for 100 million years, the feathered lizard is a beautiful multicolored lizard with interesting feathers. Scientists have still not figured out what these feathers are used for, it is possible that it is a vestigial organ.

Highly traded in the exotic pet trade, it is known for being very calm, quick, and incredibly adaptive. It mainly feeds on weeble weevils, and they have been the center on studies trying to reduce the impact of these nasty critters. While they mostly live in the deep tropical forests of Wintreath (the non-snow side) it can be seen crawling around people's houses in the metropolitan city, and they are most likely pets that escaped or could no longer be taken care of. They are also quite the tricksters and for the lizards who have several feathers, can are even known to be mistaken for small feathered birds. Many people have been told to be wary of these when seen in the forest, as they are known for purposely attracting more dangerous animals to the site of these ignorant adventurers.
