On mobile, all the buttons at the bottom of each post (quote, modify, like, etc.) don't fit in threads where I'm a mod, and so the "like" and "split topic" buttons are cut off. (It's only a problem in portrait mode; landscape is fine.)

I'm personally not a fan of the condensed buttons, especially on desktop. Hiding features behind menus leads to unnecessary clicks and makes it harder for new members to discover said features, which has already been an issue.

Would it be possible for it to dynamically hide buttons based on screen size, much like the username/avatar placement?

(But even on mobile, it's solved by scrolling, which is something you'll have to do to read the content anyway.)

Not that big of an issue though since the features are rarely used (though, since there is no thread search feature on this forum, Ctrl+F'ing the Print page is actually quite useful and I use it fairly often).

Right off-hand, you shouldn't have the empty space on the right side...the post space should go from one end of the screen to the other at that point. Do you know what resolution your phone is? I'll try to reproduce and fix the issue.

I only hid the buttons that are probably rarely used...I might be biased, but I actually like the buttons hidden on desktop view because it makes things look cleaner, and I think it'd actually help new members find buttons for things that they're more likely to need, like the post button.

I'm considering moving those buttons to the right side of the row with the topic title and changing their formatting to fit, but that depends on if I can get the forum button code to cooperate with me there.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Core Prime. A quick Google search says it's 480x800 pixels (can't find the actual resolution anywhere on my phone, but I assume that's correct). I should mention that all pages load zoomed in so that there is no empty space (the screen lines up with the gold borders), but if you scroll right or zoom all the way out, there's the empty space/rest of the page.

Think it might be related to the category titles at the top of the page. This one has a long one ("Gatekeep's Post - Citizenship and Ambassador Applications"). v

As a web developer you've probably already heard a lot of the discourse around that, so I won't bore you with it.

FYI I have the same issues as Gerrick.

The fact that it bleeds out of the page container isn't much of an issue, but needing to zoom out on non-topic pages to see the content is rather annoying. Given that the main draw of a mobile site is not needing to zoom in/out to see the content, this sort of defeats the purpose and leads to me turning on "Force desktop site" on my profile.

I have an iPhone SE (same form factor as iPhone 5S for those unfamiliar).

Not all pages have been optimized for mobile. At the moment I'm only focusing on the topic page, but may take up more pages in the future. PM is a pretty low priority, so I can't guess when I'd get around to that.

Today I worked on the bottom post buttons (quote, modify, etc.). I removed the images, which I think looked outdated, and made them look more like buttons. I did some special work with the the like button too...now if you're the author of a post, the button will be darkened and struck through to show that you can't like your own post. If you've already liked a post, it will say Unlike instead of Like (though more work needs to be done to make the button change between like and unlike when you click it).

It doesn't really resolve the issues with mobile, but I think it improves the look of the page...and we'll get there. The solution for mobile is probably to make it so some buttons collapse into a menu below a certain resolution, which is a good bit of work with SMF's code.

These new buttons look nice. Given how you're removing lines I do feel the lines between them could be a bit softer?

You said this doesn't solve issues on mobile, but it does solve one: the like button is now far easier to click without zooming in, even on the desktop site.

The button also looks cool after you click it (though unfortunately that's gone after you reload). I also like that it's possible to tell that you've liked a post, though I do miss the like count being in the button.

However, there is one issue I do have with the like button, which is that it's kinda too similar to the other buttons. Those open new pages, while this one does something different, and I think that would generally imply a different design, much like in the original design.

Also, although the icons are outdated, they do fit all the other icons on the forums (unless you're looking to do a complete overhaul of all of them). And icons in general are still most common, and perhaps even more modern (compare old reddit with new Reddit: the former has no icons and the latter does for comment actions). Maybe more modern-looking icons (Font Awesome icons or something for example) might work? Though I do think I enjoy this look of lack of icons for post actions.

Edit: I'm actually enjoying the look of the buttons quite a bit, they complete the look of the new theme on the desktop site and make it more cohesive as a whole. I might start using winter-dev but still forcing desktop site since other pages are still not optimized for my screen size.

@taulover: The like button does need more work...part of the issue is the script that updates the button after you click is outside the theme, meaning I can't edit it without changing it for all themes. When I do work on it though, I'll try to update it in a way that includes the like count.

I took a look at Font Awesome...as icons go, they look neat, and their free ones would cover the post icons, but I'm on the fence. I actually like the look of not having icons...it looks cleaner and more button-like.

I discovered in the course of working with the button that you couldn't remove likes before...you could at one time by disliking a post, but when we removed the dislike button that removed that ability as well, which is now restored. I also worked on the collapsing menu buttons, which was a major pain in the ass to work with, but now on very low resolutions, the remove post, split topic, and report post button will collapse into a 'More' button that will show a menu when clicked.
