Greetings to everyone running for Underhusen, everyone watching them, and everyone considering voting for them! I started this event last election because there hadn't been a steak fry for some time, but I'm going to keep running it, because even if BSR does the steak fry there's room for two events, right? And who wouldn't want to come to the Castle and enjoy some delicious ice cream? :D

But this is an opportunity for candidate to talk about themselves, their ideas and opinions on the issues, and explain why they're running and why you should vote for them...while having unlimited amounts of free ice cream. So let's get this thing started!

    1. First, introduce yourself, especially to voters that may not be familiar with you. Why are you running for Underhusen?

    2. What's your favourite memory of Wintreath so far?

    3. What one person from Wintreath's past or present would you most consider a role model for yourself, and why?

    4. What do you believe is the biggest strength and the biggest weakness in Wintreath right now?

    5. Recently there was talk about changing the legislature and how it functions, perhaps through another Constitutional Convention. What are your thoughts about the structure and function of the Storting?

    6. Now as before, there's been some talk about our place in the greater NS world. Do you believe we should seek closer relations with other prominent regions, or do you believe we should keep our distance? Has anything from the last term changed or reinforced your opinion on this?

    7. Recently we've seen discussion of real-life political issues become a focus of discussion, particularly on Discord, which has caused a lot of tempers flaring and discord in a community that usually prides itself on being open, friendly, and harmonious. Do you have any suggestions or ideas to promote more civil discourse in these discussions?

    8. And because discussing hot-button real-life issues have become a thing, I'm going to throw the last issue that caused a shitstorm here. Do you support affirmative action?

    9. If you are elected, what's something you would be able to do from your position to build activity in the region, and especially on the forums?

    10. Are there any other issues in the region you feel that the candidates running for election should address?

    11. Finally, what is your favourite flavour of ice cream? :)

  • 1. Hello all! I'm Katie! I'm running for my 4th term in the Underhusen and I just wanted to say that it's been a great time so far! I'm running because I want to continue my tradition of being the source of information about the Underhusen to the populace via my Underhusen Weekly Reports. Other than that, I will do my absolute best to remain accountable to the citizens of Wintreath and uphold our community values!

    2. My favorite memory of Wintreath would have to be when I was appointed as Thane of Diplomatic Officers. That was an immense leadership exercise for me and continues to be to this day. :D

    3. My biggest role model in Wintreath today is most definitely @Chanku! He has been helping me through my duties, the way I interact with people, and much more! He has been a great friend and a shoulder to lean on in difficult times.

    4. The biggest strength in Wintreath is all the new people! More new people are coming in in the past month or so than at any other time since I've joined! I'm super excited for that!

However, the biggest weakness I see in Wintreath is the stagnation of our Legislative system. As much as I know it worries people (after what happened last time), I think we should really rethink how our legislature is structured, learning from what we've brainstormed over the past few years.

    5. I was the one who suggested such a convention, although I seem to be the only one at this moment. My personal preference would be to see a legislature where the terms are increased in length and where a challenge system is implemented. However, I'm more than open to any more suggestions, this is just the opinion I settled on after reading through the debates in our previous constitutional convention.

    6. I believe that we should pursue relations with prominent regions, but with immense caution. Something has come up in the past couple weeks where The South Pacific has approached us wishing to reestablish close relations. This is very exciting, but we have a history of GP individuals not having a very favorable opinion of this region, and so we need to keep such biases in mind.

    7. Sadly I'm not one to talk about that subject. :P

    8. I do not support affirmative action. It was necessary in the past, but is no longer.

    9. If I'm elected, I'll continue to put out my Underhusen Weekly Report. In addition, I will be writing Citizen's Corner articles in the Orendi, and one thing I've been considering is posting the link to the Citizen's Platform on the RMB every time a new piece of legislation is posted.

    10. I feel that I addressed all the issues I'm concerned about at the moment, with the exception of the structure of our Judicial system, which is a debate that I am not knowledgeable on but encourage other candidates to speak on.

    11. My favorite flavor of ice cream is Cheesecake!

  • 1. First, introduce yourself, especially to voters that may not be familiar with you. Why are you running for Underhusen?

I wish to continue my career as an illegal invader. Also, because it's an election and I just can't help myself.

For real, though, I have a feeling the coming session is going to be interesting, and I wish to have a hand on the wheel.

    2. What's your favourite memory of Wintreath so far?

A bunch of ones from the old IRC days. Practically any time that Evelynx and HannahB were around, as they were hilarious.

    3. What one person from Wintreath's past or present would you most consider a role model for yourself, and why?

    Jesus, just one, huh?

Hmm. Probably Reon. He was the ideal Wintrean. He did not let anything get in the way of a united community, and was just a great person to have around.

    4. What do you believe is the biggest strength and the biggest weakness in Wintreath right now?

    Strength: ClickWar
Weakness: ClickWar. It's too good. The community has lost interest in all other pursuits.

In all seriousness, the disharmony we now face is quite unprecedented. Sure, we've gotten heated before, but for things that actually had a concrete effect on our lives in the region. This endless division over political ideologies is something I hoped never to witness in Wintreath.

    5. Recently there was talk about changing the legislature and how it functions, perhaps through another Constitutional Convention. What are your thoughts about the structure and function of the Storting?

To modify a quote from Winston Churchill: we have the worst system, except for all the other systems.

I actually think a better way does exist, but much like politics in general, it's just too divisive a topic to bring up. Therefore I choose the lesser of two evils: don't touch the idea of change with a ten-foot pole, because it's just not worth all the shit we'd have to endure to get there. We have a system. It somewhat works. Let's leave it at this and make minor improvements.

The role of the current Storting, as I see it, is to keep itself busy in between periods where its presence is actually needed, such as in new treaties, court cases and the odd commendation or other. A quiet legislature used to equate to a peaceful community. Discord is proving challenging, however.

    6. Now as before, there's been some talk about our place in the greater NS world. Do you believe we should seek closer relations with other prominent regions, or do you believe we should keep our distance? Has anything from the last term changed or reinforced your opinion on this?

I've actually been kinda convinced that we could do with seeking allies, but still believe we should stay away from gameplay. Cultural ties would be nice, though.

Implement a strict code for how debates should be conducted and mercilessly temp-ban or even permaban anyone who steps out of line. We also need a carrot if we're going to have a stick, though, so some sort of competition with a shiny title for the debater who made the best arguments (and in the most civil way possible) could also be cool, although I'll be honest, I have no idea how to do this.

    8. And because discussing hot-button real-life issues have become a thing, I'm going to throw the last issue that caused a shitstorm here. Do you support affirmative action?

No. It doesn't solve anything. It's a hasty bandaid on a massive, gaping wound. Instead, I believe schools should receive a lot more funding, maybe even to the point of being free, and then everyone can compete on a more even footing.

As unpopular as I suspect this opinion might make me, I've also seen the absolute worst case scenario for affirmative action in my own country. It's not actually used to let previously disadvantaged people have more access to the job market, it's wielded as a political tool by the local government to keep their cronies in power while the blood gets sucked out of the country.

It also instills a mindset in some people that they don't really have to try, because odds are, as long as there's a quota to be met, they're guaranteed a job anyway.

    9. If you are elected, what's something you would be able to do from your position to build activity in the region, and especially on the forums?

I believe it's time to revisit a few subjects, like reform for the courts (or maybe even complete restructuring), a few commendations we haven't gotten to (most notably Chanku's) and at long last, to declare Amalyism as the only right and true religion for any good Wintrean to follow. But don't worry, we won't burn those heretical Potatoists. We will win them over with gallons and gallons of mind-altering drugs the power of our love and conviction.

    10. Are there any other issues in the region you feel that the candidates running for election should address?

Not really. This covered all the main ones.

    11. Finally, what is your favourite flavour of ice cream? :)

It used to be death-by-chocolate, but I discovered a new one today: a melktert ice cream. It was simply divine.

Well I always run for the Underhusen, additionally I just want to carry out the rest of my platform that I've been trying to finish up for the past several months.

    4. What do you believe is the biggest strength and the biggest weakness in Wintreath right now?
Strengths- Our community, it's close and we all hold similar values.
Weakness - Our isolationism, it's overall hurting us in terms of growth and ability to project our own ideals and values.

    5. Recently there was talk about changing the legislature and how it functions, perhaps through another Constitutional Convention. What are your thoughts about the structure and function of the Storting?
I think our current structure works fine the way it is, I do have some more controversial opinions that are less....monarchist than many would like though, so I doubt I'll be proposing those anytime soon.

I personally think we need to play a greater role in the NSGP stage. Our type of community and our values need to be represented more there, and no one else is going to do it for us.

Yes. There are still effects that are lasting due to discrimination that makes it harder for those that receive it to actually get into college.

The structure is working fine as it is. I have to say, the monarchist structure of Wintreath is refreshing for a change. If the citizens want to change the something, then I would support it.

As a former diplomat for two GCRs, I believe that seeking closer relations with other prominent regions will encourage regional cultural growth. And it will enable us to be represented in NSGP.

  • 1. First, introduce yourself, especially to voters that may not be familiar with you. Why are you running for Underhusen?

I am taulover, or Tau. I've been in Wintreath since mid-2015, and have served six terms as Skrifa, including two as Speaker and one as Speaker pro tempore.

I am running for Underhusen because I think this next term may be interesting, and to address an initially minor issue that has become increasingly important as time passed on: the laws page has not been updated in many months. (See my campaign topic for more information.)

I am also currently Thane of Foreign Releases and the Second Patriarch of House Valeria.

    2. What's your favourite memory of Wintreath so far?

My answer remains the same as before: solving puzzles made by fellow Wintreans such as Emoticonius, the many various spam wars in Dumping Grounds and Summersends through the years (and now also Clickwar), forcing a tie in Werewolf VI: Until Dawn, exploring the official Minecraft server with friends... I can't really decide, Wintreath is just that amazing.

    3. What one person from Wintreath's past or present would you most consider a role model for yourself, and why?

If we're talking role models, I think probably Robin. He's at a somewhat similar stage and situation in life as I am, just a few years ahead, which is probably why he is also, IIRC, the only Wintrean I've really asked for life advice from. He does cool things, both in Wintreath and IRL, and from what I've seen keeps a wide variety of interests and hobbies, which is something I've been trying to do with my life as well.

    4. What do you believe is the biggest strength and the biggest weakness in Wintreath right now?

Laurentus jokingly suggested Clickwar, but I think this subject merits a more serious look. After all, Clickwar is the premier cultural event currently, and is paving the road for future original web games on Wintreath. But on the other hand, Clickwar is also a massive sap on our productivity. I know that I am spending time on Clickwar that I would otherwise be spending on more productive things, which affects my contribution to Wintreath both directly—there are times when I would be doing more useful things on Wintreath—and indirectly—it saps time I'd otherwise use for non-Wintreath things, thus reducing the time I spend on other Wintreath things.

Otherwise, my answer pretty much is the same as last time: I see Wintreath's biggest strength to be its community. As time has gone on I've found myself in Wintreath largely to be with the wonderful people here. The many activities to do in Wintreath helps facilitate this, but ultimately I think Wintreath's community is its greatest asset.

Our main weakness in this regard is poor integration of our community. We have long seen in this in our RMB community, which is often quite toxic and does not have much overlap with the rest of our community. We have also now seen this in our Discord community, as an influx of new members has driven up heated and unproductive conversations, often in the sphere of politics. This is possible due to a degree of separation between the Discord community and what I see as our core, largely forum-based community, but because this separation is far less than that between our RMB and forums, it also has had a far greater effect on prominent members of our community.

    5. Recently there was talk about changing the legislature and how it functions, perhaps through another Constitutional Convention. What are your thoughts about the structure and function of the Storting?

I will echo Laurentus' sentiment that the Storting is fine in its current state. There needs to be a responsive legislature in the event that we need to alter laws and such, but otherwise I no longer see low activity in the Underhusen as necessarily a bad thing. I don't see any concrete benefits from changing to a different system, particularly when we weigh in the rather annoying logistics of changing our system in the first place.

    6. Now as before, there's been some talk about our place in the greater NS world. Do you believe we should seek closer relations with other prominent regions, or do you believe we should keep our distance? Has anything from the last term changed or reinforced your opinion on this?

I continue to believe similarly to how I did in the last election: our community and culture are our greatest assets, and we should be seeking out like-minded regions in that regard. They may be new and growing, or well-established (I think Forest was a good test case for the latter). But Wintreath still has done and continues to do well in its own sphere, and I don't think that this is necessarily a high priority.

As I also said last term, we need to continue protecting our community and culture in the wider NS world, especially when our image is attacked in "gameplay" communities. This may potentially entail extending friendly ties to gameplay regions, but we should not become too involved.

The issue with a naive approach to free speech is that it actually ends up hurting and infringing the speech of others. Flaming, bigoted language, and other similar actions discourage others from participating and may even spur people to leave the community.

I still think the best way to avoid these issues is to stay out of politics in the first place. But people evidently want to have these discussions, so that's not a good solution for our community as a whole. If we want to have actual free and open conversations, we most definitely need at the very least to have stricter moderation against flaming, personal attacks, wider attacks against larger groups that may be used as personal attacks, etc. Laurentus and Chanku suggested having enforced guidelines for debate, which may be a good move.

    8. And because discussing hot-button real-life issues have become a thing, I'm going to throw the last issue that caused a shitstorm here. Do you support affirmative action?

As I said in my answer to the previous question, staying out of real-world politics is probably the best move for both my and the community's well-being. But if the Monarch himself is asking me this question, I suppose I'll answer. :P

As Chanku said, affirmative action is still necessary to deal with the lingering effects of decades/centuries of systemic discrimination, much of which has only ceased to exist quite recently and/or continues to exist in some form today.

I am most familiar with the discussion surrounding Asian American college admissions, highlighted most recently in SFFA v. Harvard. While I am fairly neutral on this particular issue itself, what we can see in cases such as these is political strategists (in this case, Ed Blum) hiding behind supposedly grassroots movements and coopting them to turn various minority groups against each other and to advance a potentially white supremacist agenda. Success in fighting and overturning affirmative action in this area creates precedent against affirmative action and additionally turns public opinion against it, making it easier to take down affirmative action in areas where they may be more seriously needed, such as in some various career fields.

    9. If you are elected, what's something you would be able to do from your position to build activity in the region, and especially on the forums?

Typically, the work of the Underhusen does not affect the greater community activity, as most activity (and most of my work building activity) is unrelated to and takes place apart from it. However, in my capacity as Skrifa, proposing and debating bills is still a driver of activity within the Storting and, to a lesser extent, the citizenry as a whole.

    10. Are there any other issues in the region you feel that the candidates running for election should address?

    No, not really.

    11. Finally, what is your favourite flavour of ice cream? :)

Another answer that has not changed: matcha green tea.

  • 1. First, introduce yourself, especially to voters that may not be familiar with you. Why are you running for Underhusen?
Hi, I'm ogunbiyi6422, my real name is Stephen. I have been a member of Nation States since June 29, 2017, and I have been a part of Wintreath for just as long. I'm running for Underhusen because I want to find a way to help Wintreath and have some new ideas and have a real impact on Wintrean politics

    2. What's your favorite memory of Wintreath so far?
When I finished my RP map and everyone appreciated it and considered using it. That really made me happy and encouraged to further do things for Wintreath

    3. What one person from Wintreath's past or present would you most consider a role model for yourself, and why?
I think it would be Katie. She helped with the early stages of trying to do something for Wintreath and she has been very politically active. I think she's a great role model.

    4. What do you believe is the biggest strength and the biggest weakness in Wintreath right now?
My strength I believe is the understanding of how Wintreath works and what it attempts to do. However, my greatest weaknesses is finding what I fit into and serving Wintreath

    5. Recently there was talk about changing the legislature and how it functions, perhaps through another Constitutional Convention. What are your thoughts about the structure and function of the Storting?
I think the storting functions quite effectively with Underhusen and Overhusen being a great representation of how our leaders can help Wintreath. Maybe an addition of the amount of members that can be accepted to either hall might be a good thought though

    6. Now as before, there's been some talk about our place in the greater NS world. Do you believe we should seek closer relations with other prominent regions, or do you believe we should keep our distance? Has anything from the last term changed or reinforced your opinion on this?
I have not been too on top of Nation States politics, but I think our connections are well attached and that we should focus more on developing the region to bring newcomers in.

I think if we are less critical of different philosophies and more open to different political views, we can understand each other and allow more friendly, yet open minded discussions. Some people may feel they need to defend their position if they are criticized because their views aren't widely accepted or offensive. Political discussions can be a little heated, but the active arguments and flaring that can be rude and mean, should have no place.

    8. And because discussing hot-button real-life issues have become a thing, I'm going to throw the last issue that caused a shitstorm here. Do you support affirmative action?
That's a hard one, though I believe it is well intended, it is out of date and actively discriminates against majorities for the bad decisions of their parents. However, we need a better way to allow minorities to easily get into college.

    9. If you are elected, what's something you would be able to do from your position to build activity in the region, and especially on the forums?
I would like to propose some new civil service ideas that would allow newcomers to participate in different ways to help the Wintrean community.

    10. Are there any other issues in the region you feel that the candidates running for election should address?
Not that I can think of now

    11. Finally, what is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
    Chocolate-Strawberry Ice cream
