  • After finishing his meal Sergeant Prydin pulled a pipe and tobacco box out from his pocket.  As he went to light his pipe he shot a glance at Mor, "So Findandrel, why lie about your experience?" he let out his first puff of smoke, "A good friend of mine had it on good authority that you were a veteran mercenary before you joined this army."

Corporal Kharis looked over at the sergeant a bit startled and bewildered. "Sarge?"

Mor looked just as shocked as Perren and the Corporal. "Who, me? Well, first, I'm Morredir, Sergeant, Finandrel's me da, but second, y'see, I'm just a recruit, I don't know nothing about no war and little enough about fighting, why, I was relying on you and the corporal here to teach me everything you know ab-"
All at once, the facade of surprise collapsed into a knowing grin, the slouch he'd adopted gradually morphing into a straight-backed stance even as a wavering voice and stammer gave way to a wry, confident drawl.
"Ah, you got me. Riding fair beats slogging in the mud with the foot troops, and I've not the size for the lancers, so it's always been your lot I've had in mind. I figured if I got a real post I'd do the straight thing, but finding out I didn't even rate as a private? Well, for shame. So I thought I'd take this whole mess of training as a paid holiday of sorts. That plan's not worth much now, I s'pose. But well done, sergeant."
He stood up from the fire, stretching his legs out as he continued to talk. "By the by, who's your mate? Someone I might know? Another war-dog son of Kalein returned home to fight for his kin?"

  • The Sergeant let out another puff from his pipe. "It's nothing against your skill Morredir. It's a new army, everyone who joins for the campaign gets the same training. The Corporal and I just got it sooner so that we could train you lot. Such grand holidays come when you live long enough to earn the title Evocati. As for my friend? You should know, all sergeants know each other. I certainly wasn't going to meet a batch of fresh faces without learning a bit about them first." Prydin chuckled.  "Alright, the lot of you, finish your meals quickly and get to sleep. We march out at dawn. Corporal Kharis, you have first watch."

Kharis's back straightened into attention, "Yes Sarge!"
