I haven't been able to get on since the update. Is there any chance of the server updating soon?

I mean, just switch version back to older one and you should be able to get on again.

But yeah, Update Aquatic would be cool.

I for one, don't want the server to update, namely because I use water in a number of different things on my base and I haven't been able to upgrade that stuff to not use it just yet.

Well I still want the server on 1.8 so my EATS road can still work.

We should go back to 1.7 so the server can stay as it was when we started it and I never have to try to upgrade anything.

I'm not sure. I actually did try to upgrade it last month, and the lag was so bad that it wasn't playable. Even worse, the upgrade changes the map structure, so I couldn't just downgrade back...I had to ask our host to restore a backup from before the upgrade. I've read that there's been a lot of issues like this with 1.13, so maybe we can try again eventually when they're hammered out.

Oh does it change water physics!?  HOW COULD THEY DO THIS!?

It does change some water physics but there are also a bunch of new and somewhat useful features in the update so it does make up for that, I guess. Personally, while the update may be large, I don't think it's worth upgrading at this time but I totally understand that the new features can be pretty cool.

Do you think there would be additional issues when updating across two versions? Besides the aquatic update, there is going to be a "Jungle Update" or something with bamboo, pandas and foxes. Would the server see it as a bigger update, and not be able to handle it?

I have no technical experience in this area, so I just have to wonder.

I don't think it's an issue with the server itself, but with the generated content of the world on it. Minecraft was at version 1.7 when the world was first generated in 2014, and it's been upgraded time and time again over the years. You can almost see how the world has grown over time, because you have to go out a ways from spawn to find blocks that were introduced in later updates, such as granite in 1.8. As I understand it, version 1.13 rewrites the world files so that it's stored in a different format, which is why you can't easily downgrade back once you upgrade.

Long story short, I think it'd be easy to upgrade if we deleted the world and started a new one in the process, but doing that would wipe years of work that people have put into it, some of it from people that are no longer with us. The challenge is how to keep what we have and upgrade, and to be honest I haven't had a chance to delve into that since my initial attempt to upgrade failed.

Edit: I see that 1.13.2 was released last month, which is supposed to fix some performance and upgrade issues. I could try upgrading again when I'm off for the holidays, I suppose.
