I think I'm with North on this. Trump hasn't really given up anything and as for surprising his own military, he did. But it's something that they must have decided about while negotiating and as I will state, it doesn't give up much. Holding off on the war games was a good idea, they do nothing but piss off NK, who goes about lording their, "You scum will pay, we have nukes" scheme they've been pulling for so long. Yes, it helps soldiers to train, and also yes, if they haven't figured out how to work together since at least 1997, well, there's no helping them.
What's more concerning to me is that Trump did legitimize Kim, North Korea and their human rights abuses. In a fucking horrifying statement he made on national television which was being broadcast over the world because all eyes are on this event, when probed about Kim's human rights abuses he stated, "I think Kim loves his people... [H]e's just doing what he needs to...". That's a word for word quote there. I'm surprised it's not all over the god damn news, had Obama done this, he would have been vilified on the every news station across the country and the world for weeks and people are glossing over it.
Aside from all of this, I think opening talks with NK would have been a good idea if we had a competent president in that there White House but, well, we have Trump. We can't get everything, Kim won't give that to us right away, but we can convince him to give an inch now, soon we'll be able to take a mile... If these discussions hold up...
Edit: Expanded on the War Games comment.
