"If you try to be all things to all people, you're nothing to anybody." —Sen. Harkin

Hello Wintreath and welcome to this the EIGHTH ROBIN STEAK FRY!!  As always, we've managed to put together a healthy pile of steaks and an even healthier pile of candidates this election season, and invited them here to connect with you, their future donors constituents!
Good afternoon candidates, citizens, flora and fauna!  Welcome to the 8th Harkin Robin Steak Fry!  Assembled before you today we have a great many valorous visitations of various vexations candidates from every corner of Wintreath standing before you in the hopes of serving you in the Underhusen and beyond!  As always, they hope to connect with you, the citizenry, on their views on Wintreath today, the future of the Underhusen, and the future of this community as a whole.
Apart from the questions of the citizenry (which I hope are more numerous this cycle than those of the past) we have compiled a few starting questions for the candidates which generally prove informative about their political views, philosophies, and ideas of good governance.  These first few questions are as follows:

    1. Before we get into the real meat of the this event, as always, I want to ask all the candidates—what make you decide to run for the Underhusen or other positions?  What do you think should the main goals of our Underhusen and of the wider government of Wintreath?

    2. As has been shown time and again in the annals of history, both in the digital and physical world, to survive and prosper, a community must grow.  What do you believe is the best way to return Wintreath to a regime of growth in NationStates and beyond?  Do you have any proposals for the growth of Wintreath that you can implement as a government official?

    3. What, other than inactivity, do you think is the biggest problem facing Wintreath at this point, either as a NationStates region and or a community (or both!)?

    4. Do other NS regions have any programs or operations that you think we could emulate to enrich our community here in Wintreath?  If so, please share, that we might emulate them!! :D

    5. Who is your favourite politician (real or fictional) and why?

    6. What is your favourite form of government?  Why?

    7. What do you think makes a successful democracy?

    8. Are you capable of being online for the duration of this session of the Underhusen?  How "active" do you consider yourself on the forums?

    9. Now we're not too formal here.  I don't want this to be a a place for candidates to get on their soapbox, but rather a genuine and free exchange of ideas, so:  what questions do you feel every candidate should be asked?  As this is a bit more of an informal event (it's a steak fry, after all) feel free to engage in debate (but preferably mutually beneficial discussion) with your fellow candidates and upstanding citizens of the Wintreath community!  :)

    10. And now, the most important question of all—how would you like your steak?

Well, I always run for the Underhusen and besides, I do think that some changes to the law and legal side of Wintreath should occur.

Well as a Skrifa, I can generally aid in the writing and passing of laws and acts, among other things.

    3. What, other than inactivity, do you think is the biggest problem facing Wintreath at this point, either as a NationStates region and or a community (or both!)?
Entryists. Because we have a general government it is somewhat more open to people wishing to try and enter Wintreath for their own gain, while this isn't that big of an issue, I do believe it is one that we might need to address a bit more.

    4. Do other NS regions have any programs or operations that you think we could emulate to enrich our community here in Wintreath?  If so, please share, that we might emulate them!! :D
    Not at this time.

[quote[5. Who is your favourite politician (real or fictional) and why? [/quote]
I've stated this multiple times before, and I'm too lazy to look through all of my answers, but I know one of them is FDR and another is Bernie Sanders. FDR because he helped the country through the Great Depression and Bernie Sanders because of his integrity.

    6. What is your favourite form of government?  Why?
A Democratic Republic, and generally a Federal Democratic Republic when possible. As to why, it is because I view it as the most just form of government in a large group. When it comes to a Federal Democratic Republic I really like the method that Germany uses.

    7. What do you think makes a successful democracy?
A 'democracy' is prone to demagoguery and manipulation. It is where two wolves and a sheep vote on what to have for dinner. A successful democracy can't be really formed, because it is a Democracy.

    8. Are you capable of being online for the duration of this session of the Underhusen?  How "active" do you consider yourself on the forums?
My general prior activity with the Underhusen generally speaks for itself.

  • Yes, finally, an election I'm running in that has a Robin Steak Fry! :D

    1. Before we get into the real meat of the this event, as always, I want to ask all the candidates—what make you decide to run for the Underhusen or other positions?  What do you think should the main goals of our Underhusen and of the wider government of Wintreath?
I'm running for Thane of Embassy Dispatches because organizing the Orendi, puzzle dispatches, etc. is fun and I'd like to continue sending things out to our fellow NS regions.

I'm running for Underhusen mainly to bolster the activity of the election and potentially the Storting term as well. I do have some plans (such as keeping the laws page updated and granting more Commendations and possibly Paragons) but I'm not going to be too ambitious this term.

Within NS, there's much that can be done to improve our standing among regions. Building stronger relations with other regions would definitely be a plus. At the very least, regularly posted updates are important to show that we still value our commitment to diplomatic relations, something I have been doing and hope to continue to do as Embassy Dispatches Thane.

It would also be nice to expand into non-NS areas, with Wintreath being the hub, but practically that's a long way off and difficult to implement.

    3. What, other than inactivity, do you think is the biggest problem facing Wintreath at this point, either as a NationStates region and or a community (or both!)?
In general, outreach, recruitment, and integration. It's always difficult to bring people into the region and especially the forums (and convince them to stay), especially when the issue is exacerbated by the divisions between different parts of Wintreath (RMB, forums, Discord, etc.).

My brief stint as Thane of Integration has led me to realize that this is a complex issue with no easy solution, unfortunately.

    4. Do other NS regions have any programs or operations that you think we could emulate to enrich our community here in Wintreath?  If so, please share, that we might emulate them!! :D
None that I am currently aware of.

    5. Who is your favourite politician (real or fictional) and why?
Hmm, I do like the Star Wars Legends version of Mon Mothma.

A charismatic and idealistic leader. Champion of the people in a corrupt society, then a pro-democracy revolutionary, and finally a stateswoman who balanced competing and potentially destabilizing factions in a nascent wartime republic.

    6. What is your favourite form of government?  Why?
I'm a fan of the efficiency of a parliamentary democracy. (Though considering that I don't live under one, perhaps actually experiencing it would be different.) For good representation, I like mixed-member proportional for the balance of ideological and regional representation.

In NS, constitutional monarchy is probably best, since it reflects the massive power that internet admins hold.

    7. What do you think makes a successful democracy?
The single most important thing is a political culture that supports democracy and legitimizes the democratic regime and process. Without that, any safeguards you put in place (such as transparency requirements, good voting systems, legal rights) are easily bypassed and/or ignored by the people in power.

    8. Are you capable of being online for the duration of this session of the Underhusen?  How "active" do you consider yourself on the forums?
In all likelihood, yes, considering that I am (by most metrics) the most active person on the forums.

    9. Now we're not too formal here.  I don't want this to be a a place for candidates to get on their soapbox, but rather a genuine and free exchange of ideas, so:  what questions do you feel every candidate should be asked?
    No, not really.

    10. And now, the most important question of all—how would you like your steak?
Medium. Or medium well, if you can do it well (heh) while keeping the meat tender.

  • 1. Before we get into the real meat of the this event, as always, I want to ask all the candidates—what make you decide to run for the Underhusen or other positions?  What do you think should the main goals of our Underhusen and of the wider government of Wintreath?
I decided to run because I was nominated, I’ve been in the past 7 sessions, and I just like being in the UH. I get to help the region grow and prosper, and I have a say in how my region is run. I’m not sure what the UH’s main goal should be, but i think it should be to stay active and at least do something that helps the region.

I think the best way is to just listen to the community and seriously consider their suggestions to grow Wintreath. Just changing thing up or adding things every once in awhile can help.

    3. What, other than inactivity, do you think is the biggest problem facing Wintreath at this point, either as a NationStates region and or a community (or both!)?
    Heresy toward the Holy Potatoe

    4. Do other NS regions have any programs or operations that you think we could emulate to enrich our community here in Wintreath?  If so, please share, that we might emulate them!! :D
    Not really

    5. Who is your favourite politician (real or fictional) and why?
    Donald Trump
    I don’t know

    6. What is your favourite form of government? Why?
The US one. Because it works.

    7. What do you think makes a successful democracy?
A good balance of power and good leaders who listen to their people.

    8. Are you capable of being online for the duration of this session of the Underhusen?  How "active" do you consider yourself on the forums?
I’ve answered this in my campaign. I haven’t been active in May, but I will be active enough to do my duty as a Skrifa if elected.

I guess one question I have is “Are you a Potatoeist? If not, are you at least okay with Potatoeists?”

    10. And now, the most important question of all—how would you like your steak?
    Medium well.

So now I have tried Robin Steak, BSR!

  • 1. Before we get into the real meat of the this event, as always, I want to ask all the candidates—what made you decide to run for the Underhusen or other positions?  What do you think should the main goals of our Underhusen and of the wider government of Wintreath?
This is a meaty question, but in as simple terms as possible - at one point I had the impression that there was no basis for citizenship in our legislation. That's since been demonstrated to be false, since it's in the statutes, but given that the rights of citizenship are outlined in the Constitution, it should also be where the ways in which one can gain citizenship in the first place are - as is the case for almost all constitutions worldwide, wherein the first section tends to delineate how citizenship is established.
As for the goals of the UH and the government as a whole - I think that the UH should have a light touch, but I think it's also incumbent on the rest of the government as a whole to ensure that they can get things done. As we saw with the citizenship deferral issue this session and the one before, legislation for it was sent up to the OH 3 times, but sentiments about how the legislation was somehow incomplete were not voiced until such time as the OH brought it to vote, despite UH debate taking place in a publicly visible forum. I think any objections shouldn't hesitate to be raised - whether in the public channels that the Speaker makes available, or in private ones like PMs - for the specific reason of avoiding that kind of debacle where a simple piece of legislation takes so long that the very reason for it being proposed is obviated before it's even done.

Being...involved in the public face of our NS-side of things, the RMB, it's my opinion that the RMB needs to be presented, and thus seen, as a welcoming face of an inclusive region. That, more than anything else, is going to get people to put their foot in the door - because even though we have a lovely community both in forums and discord, the first impression is the most important, and that first impression for people coming from NS specifically is going to be the RMB. Having active moderation is the first layer, but on another level people should be communicating on the RMB reasonable often as well - because especially as someone who was resolutely only on the RMB for years, if there hadn't been an active and honestly lovely community of people, I might well have gone somewhere else entirely before deciding to step foot into the forums.

    3. What, other than inactivity, do you think is the biggest problem facing Wintreath at this point, either as a NationStates region and or a community (or both!)?
We need to decide whether we're going to be actively involved in gameplay, or cut all ties. As it is, we're kind of in this nebulous halfway point, where we sort of care about gameplay things, but have no military or way to project ourselves in any of those groups. Some form of referendum on the subject would probably be the best way to establish a community-level idea of which way we want to head.

    4. Do other NS regions have any programs or operations that you think we could emulate to enrich our community here in Wintreath?  If so, please share, that we might emulate them!! :D
I only vaguely recall this, but I think there was a region called Illuminati(? maybe) that had these increasingly intricate 'signups' of sort as someone progressed throughout the region. I don't know if that's useful - but maybe it could be handy thing for us to implement on a governmental level, where if you're running for office you need to say more than sort of those bare-bones things about yourself that we all did in the citizenship application - so that we don't just know your platform, but more about you as a person.

    5. Who is your favourite politician (real or fictional) and why?
Weirdly, it might be a guy like "Boss" Tweed. Which, er, doesn't make me look very scrupulous, since he was convicted for corruption and fraud, but I think machine politics were (or really, I suppose, would have been) a precursor to the sort of strong political parties you see in places like Britain or Germany - as opposed to the incredibly weak ones we have here where there hardly seems to be a whip at all. Because if your party has no central direction - well, what the hell do you stand for? Nobody knows. Machine politics ensure that someone is providing that central direction that gets things done.
A more scrupulous example might have been Richard Daly (the elder), but I wanted to point out that there's a lot of unsavory elements to machine politics, as opposed to merely highlighting the general efficiency and administrative success associated with the Chicago Machine's running of the city (at least until the machine collapsed in the late '80s and Chicago lost the plot completely).

    6. What is your favourite form of government?  Why?
I mean, practically speaking, a benevolent dictatorship. The problem is, those don't last very long, and are usually followed up by profoundly unbenevolent dictatorships.
My preferred one among practical choices would probably be a semi-presidential democracy, a la France, with the strong-party elements provided by parliamentary systems, while retaining the unifying character of presidential figures.

    7. What do you think makes a successful democracy?
I'm a fan of more information, not less. The key to note is information, as opposed to data - we all have better things to do than trawl through inane babbling drivel, but being able to see the brass tacks so you can get down to them makes everyone make better decisions.

    8. Are you capable of being online for the duration of this session of the Underhusen?  How "active" do you consider yourself on the forums?
Barring unforeseen death or accident, yup. As to activity - I actively lurk and infrequently post, if that makes any sense. But seeing as I'm pretty much always on Discord, if anything suddenly came up I'd be aware of it within sort of 12 hours or so (in the worst-case scenario where I fall asleep and then need to go to summer classes immediately after waking up).

I suppose the most prudent question would be 'Are you going to propose any joke legislation'? (The answer to that question: if it were easier, god, yes, I would - but because it's more work to draft joke legislation than I think would provide enough amusement to justify it, I wouldn't). Which, I guess, saves me from cheapening the institution of the UH thanks to the power of laziness. One vice saves me from another.

    10. And now, the most important question of all—how would you like your steak?
    Medium.

  • 1. Before we get into the real meat of the this event, as always, I want to ask all the candidates—what make you decide to run for the Underhusen or other positions?  What do you think should the main goals of our Underhusen and of the wider government of Wintreath?

Well, I've run for almost 11 consecutive sessions now so, might aswell continue the trend eh? Don't fix whats not broken! On the goals of the Underhusen I feel that its main purpose is to fulfill the responsibilities that the constitution delineates to it. Most of the actual work pushing forward the reason happens in cabinet, thats how the region is set up. The Underhusen is at its heart I feel a judicial body these days, even if its also the legislature, there simply isn't that much to pass in terms of legislation. We respond to needs when they happen and thats fine with me.

Wintreath is on a good path I feel. Even though activity slumps and rises we shouldn't always take that to be a crisis. We're a well functioning, friendly and open community, growth will come with time.

    3. What, other than inactivity, do you think is the biggest problem facing Wintreath at this point, either as a NationStates region and or a community (or both!)?

    See Mathylands answer.

    4. Do other NS regions have any programs or operations that you think we could emulate to enrich our community here in Wintreath?  If so, please share, that we might emulate them!! :D

I mean, obviously. Other regions are objectively more successful then us in many ways, its just figuring out why isn't so easy. Unfortunately I do not have any revelations at this time!

    5. Who is your favourite politician (real or fictional) and why?

Historically? I've always been a fan of Pedro I, Emperor of Brazil, the little known(outside Brazil of course) monarch who charted Brazil onto a bright path, only to be thwarted by a small group of Republican revolutionaries who didn't like him abolishing slavery. A wonderful example of a benevolent monarch.

    6. What is your favourite form of government?  Why?

I mean, I'll echo what Doc said about a benevolent dictatorship. If only it worked for long. I'm a fan of parliamentary democracy, but also of the socialist democratic state if done correctly.

    7. What do you think makes a successful democracy?

Good leadership! I feel a need to give praise to Wintermoot every time I see this question. Our democracy and Winterath with it are only as strong as they are because our central leadership is so strong!

    8. Are you capable of being online for the duration of this session of the Underhusen?  How "active" do you consider yourself on the forums?

I obviously wish I was more active, but with summer well on its way I feel I can be far more active then before.

    9. • It's a joke being bandied about in Discord last night taken to its logical conclusion.
We were observing that Abstain got a huge rush of votes from Johanna, and had thus conclusively beaten Crush and might beat whoever's polling in 4th. I then jokingly changed my name to Abstain and declared I had the election on lock; Crush and Trader then proceeded to join me, and in Trader's case, make that, uh, post.

  • While this started off very much as a joke, I'm actually serious about running. If @Wintermoot lets this slide, which is doubtful but here's hoping, I would mainly want to pass legislation protecting the vote of abstention to prevent someone from doing this kind of thing again along with (or possibly as a part of) an omnibus bill updating old legislation to have the correct language. It would be a number of minor updates and clarifications on various laws, as an example, not all documents referring to the UH refer to the representatives as Skrifa, using different wording as they were written before the term was coined or applied to the UH. There are other possible things we may add to the omnibus as suggestions are made but this is my primary goal.

While growth is not the specific focus of this rather quickly put together campaign, it's something I would be wholeheartedly capable of looking into as I have experience running a number of discord communities with 100+ and 175+ members.

I want Wintreath to be filled with life unlike ever before. I want to see it grow and I see the lack of it as one of the main issues with Wintreath but of course it's not something that we can rush into, there are many things we can do to create rapid growth but it may not be sustainable or may bring in the wrong kind of people, which would create more issues than it helps to solve. I would like to foster a discussion about growth and make it part of my campaign in the next session.

As for activity... Well, it's clear I'm not very active on here. Reaching back to the issue of inactivity I believe there are many things we can do to increase engagement and other things of the sort which may help to solve many problems. I've been inactive for a number of reasons; life, my mental health and work come to mind as the major sources of such but seeing as all 3 are improving, I will be able to be considerably more active from now on.

We have a bill that protects abstention.
    Definition of Abstention Act

    3. The term "abstain" in regards to votes for elected office shall be defined as any vote or lack thereof that does not select from the prescribed candidates in the election.
       (a) The candidates in an election are defined by the Monarch or other election official in accordance with section IV.2 of the Wintreath Fundamental Laws.

    4. Votes marked "abstain" shall not contribute for/against any majority or supermajority for the passing and/or ratification of any bill, nor shall votes marked "abstain" contribute towards the election of any candidate.

    Enforcement
    5. This act affirms the right of any citizen to abstain from voting during any vote and for any purpose.

Indeed we do, but not protecting it from stuff like someone changing their name to Abstain to win an election.
