I know that you have to be of a certain age to understand the nostalgia behind AIM...other than perhaps ICQ, for a lot of us it was the first instant messaging client we ever used (it certainly was for me). It harks back to a time when being personal on the internet was less casual and the people we were personal with were more treasured, and our internet lives were very separate from our "real" lives.

But the article also has an interesting piece drawn from an interview with the CEO of Discord, and from the way he talks it's obvious he feels that Discord is a spiritual successor to AIM, and it touches on the games Emily is Away and Emily is Away Too, games that revolve around interacting with friends (who are always girls) over AIM. In fact, to commemorate AIM's closing, Emily is Away Too released a free DLC that's apparently supposed to reskin Steam Chat to resemble AIM circa 2006.

I think it's an interesting read for all, even those that never used AIM.
