Not that I actually know the answer but it would be quite probable, especially if the archaeology in question is historical, and I would assume any magic (seeing as you are a mage) would be tied to some of an ancient tongue, as is typical of fantasy settings.

He could probably decipher some bits of it. Parts about it being built to hide from the dragon-infested skies and such, but the period in which it was built was a transitionary time between classical Elven and the modern dialects. Thus, it may require more time to decipher the precise meaning through comparison with contemporary writings.
