I thought this was a thought-provoking article that articulated the politically correct culture among some in America and the backlash to it among others. It's interesting in that you have one group that has become so sensitive to certain issues that they feel promoting a safe (some would call it sanitized) environment should trump free speech rights, while another group is so disdainful of the first group that they become the exact opposite, saying and doing things that even years ago would've been considered indecent and vulgar.

But what's telling is where each group placed their energies...while the college students were squabbling with administration over the authenticity of Asian cuisine in the cafeteria, people just miles away were flocking to Donald Trump.

At the end of the day, I run Wintreath the way in line with the way I feel topics and discussions ought to be handled: that people should be respectful to each other and be able to discuss topics in a civil manner, but that no topic should be banned from discussion. Even speech that almost everyone finds objectionable ought to be protected, if only so that society can engage with those sentiments and thoroughly condemn and denounce them. Banning topics or sentiments does not eliminate them...it merely drives them underground and allows them to fester.

My opinion: (abbreviated) Political correctness has gone too far, but people don't need to be dicks either. I don't think I should have to watch what I say so you don't get offended, but I also don't think that I should be actively trying to offend you. Once we lose the ability to discuss problems in society and express disagreement, we have lost a functional society. Just because I'm a straight male doesn't mean I can't have an opinion because I "don't understand."  That logic is absurd. The proper response to oppression isn't to oppress those who share your ideas but happen to be unlike you.

tl;dr: don't try to offend people, think before you're offended

I don't think it's completely accurate to claim that the rise in "safe spaces" is exclusive to the political left. Behind the free speech rhetoric, there's the proposals to censor media under libel laws, as well as what is arguably the Internet's biggest safe space.

The Bubble is becoming an issue for people across the political spectrum, IMO. To suggest that it's only a problem for one side is a gross oversimplification.

It's one side's problem insofar as that side lost the election, to the point that not only will it have no role in determining the policies of the country for at least the next two years, it will be hard-pressed to defend the policies they made in the last eight.

And ironically for a side that believes in inclusiveness, they largely got in this predicament by excluding and writing off a large portion of people in this country. Anyone who wasn't firmly on that side, especially people considering voting for Trump, were written off as racist, sexist, homophobic "deplorables" who were not worth their time. Even the Clinton campaign made the conscious decision not to reach out to white working class people in the Rust Belt who proved to be her campaign's undoing...the same people that were left behind in the Obama economic recovery, mind you.

Is it any wonder then that a good many of them concluded that liberals and the Democratic Party are a bunch of elitist snobs that don't care about them? Is it any wonder that they voted the other party when we didn't even bother with them? Is it any wonder that the Democratic Party has largely ceased to exist outside of the West Coast, Northeast, and urban enclaves?

The good news is that I strongly believe that 46% of the country is not sexist, racist, or homophobic, and that when it comes to it most people actually support liberal policies and causes, especially more rights and freedoms for individuals, less wealth inequality, and a strong social net for those who are less fortunate. We just need people who can and will articulate how advancing these issues is good for everyone, not just various minorities that make up the Democratic base.

So I don't dispute that people on both sides want to see what they believe, but the other side has the luxury of being firmly in power in the federal government and most of the state governments. They don't have to remove their blinders...we do.

I wouldn't say that the reason Clinton lost the election was because the country was racist/sexist/homophobic as much as misinformed, maltreated and broke.  Trump capitalized on the economic message, Hillary ignored it, and well, to quote Bill Clinton, "It's the economy stupid!"
