  • The guns look so real, though...it looks like a real gun shop. :P

Then you've never been to a real gun shop apparently.

Go to an airsoft store, then a gun store.  There are differences.   The Orange tip being one of them.
There are differences, yes, but the ones we were viewing that day didn't have orange tips.

Ah, in the US, they're required.

Also, here's a bit of a thing that explains firearms laws in the US:

  • I know a person with bipolar disorder and severe emotional issues.  He does not have a licence to carry a weapon, nor does he have any sort of certification saying he knows how to handle a gun.  He's had a history of suicidal tendencies and temper tantrums.  Anyone who knows him shudders at the thought of him having a gun.

And yet he walked into a WalMart - A FUCKING WALMART - and bought a gun.  Just bought it outright.  Had to wait a little while, but went shopping while he did.  Bought some beer and some underwear, and then went and picked up his gun.

    That's a joke.

  • Indeed that is. O.o

I feel I should come in and defend people with bipolar disorder, as I suffer from it myself, and many of us are perfectly stable if we work out, follow a healthy diet, take our medication as needed and really work with our medical teams, but what you've just described is absolutely crazy. It's really asking for trouble to have someone with such severe emotional instability being able to buy a gun with no screening process or license whatsoever. O.o

In South Africa, the requirements you have to meet to legally own a firearm are incredibly strict, and with good reason.

  • If bipolar disorder is properly handled, it isn't a problem.  I get that.  But he doesn't handle it at all.  He doesn't take medication.  He doesn't work out.  He doesn't do anything that would help keep him in a healthy place.  I'm not saying people who have bipolar are a threat or anything like that.  But he is.

  • Don't worry, I didn't feel offended in any way. :)

And for the record, I understand that it simply isn't all that smart to have someone with bipolar legally own a gun, either.

I just feel it is my duty to occasionally chime in about bipolar disorder, as there is a lot of prejudice regarding the illness. :)

  • Studies show that most mental disorders can be either partially or fully alleviated with diet and exercise alone, and yet doctors in America prescribe medications because they know Americans probably won't follow a diet or exercise. But that's another topic entirely. :P

Earlier this year the West Virginia state legislature passed a bill that would have removed the requirement for people to get training and a permit to carry concealed guns in public...the governor vetoed it, but it came that close. Apparently having to prove you know what you're doing with a firearm infringes on the right to bear arms.

Somewhat related, in Montana a 17 year old boy accidentally kills his friend after being startled awake by someone tapping on his window, immediately grabbing a gun at his bedside, and shooting him through the window. More here.

  • Well, look, I can only speak from experience here when I say that I HAVE to take my medication and go to therapy. :P

I've had some epic mood swings when I've attempted to bare-knuckle it and only 'treat' my bipolar with dieting and exercise. :P

But I will say that I am in the lucky position to have a great psychiatrist and psychologist, and they are light on the meds.

Some other psychiatrists are fucking scary with what they'll prescribe.

  • Indeed...obviously what each person needs will be unique, but there's a good case for doctors in the US over-prescribing anti-depressants and doing so in lieu of diet/exercise and therapy. Not to mention that anti-depressants are a huge business over here, with pharmaceutical companies constantly marketing them directly to the consumer.

That is very unfortunate and disappointing.  The problem simply is two fold: Enforce the current firearms laws, don't add more laws and regulations as is.  Then properly treat those with mental disorders.

However, depending on the state, the screening process for a gun ranges from strict (California) to pretty lax (Idaho, North Carolina apparently)

  • People with mental disorders aren't any more likely to kill people with guns than those who don't...
And also, this is the most off-topic I've seen us in a while!
