  • There really wasn't much advancement in technology from 1700 to 1800, so I threw in an extra century for steam engines (trains and ships), repeating rifles, hand cranked gatling guns, revolvers, telegrams, electricity (plus early light bulbs), ironclads, etc. Public transportation gets a nice boost in effectiveness and accessibility, pioneering becomes a more achievable feat, and trade can be made quicker over greater distances. You still have cannons, though slightly more sophisticated, and muskets, but there's the ability to improve upon what you have. Plus airships came about before 1900, so you can still have those.

    • To sit back hoping that someday, some way, someone will make things right is to go on feeding the crocodile, hoping he will eat you last - but eat you he will.

  • Since these things will become available at like 400, I guess I am sort of okay with that.

  • If 400 must be reached before any of these things can be obtained, why even bother?

  • My Dear Jean-Luc!
  • Super easy tech system:  All techs from year 1700 available.  All other techs accessible by year of invention-1700 multiplied by two:

    Ex:  Cotton Gin (1793) = 1793-1700 = 93*2 = 186.  (Available at 186 tech)

Does that sound like an ok-ish way of doing things?  :)

(I stole this format from tau, but who am I not to copy a great system? :-) )

  • I'm sure we can work out a graduated system that starts well below 400.  If we incorporate other stats, that'll make it easier to allow lower SA scores.  See below for an example of the type of system I mean.  (These numbers are arbitrary; the values are unimportant.)

    Example Tech Advancement System
Advancement: Stat Requirement 1, Stat Requirement 2, etc.
Railroads: Scientific Advancement 200, Public Transport 1500
Telegraph: Scientific Advancement 275, Information Technology 3500
Repeating Rifle: Scientific Advancement 250, Arms Manufacturing 4000

We'd have to predetermine which technologies would be regulated this way, and by what stats and values, but I think a system similar to the one modeled here would be worth implementing. Making scientific advancement the only determining variable is quite limiting, in my opinion.  Different nations have different priorities, and that should be reflected in our tech development.  (Also, what are we going to do about obtaining technologies via trade or espionage?)
Super easy tech system:  All techs from year 1700 available.  All other techs accessible by year of invention-1700 multiplied by two:

    Ex:  Cotton Gin (1793) = 1793-1700 = 93*2 = 186.  (Available at 186 tech)

Does that sound like an ok-ish way of doing things?  :)
(Slipped this in while I was typing.  :P) I was going to suggest something like this myself, and think it could be used in conjunction with the system I suggested.  My only concern is that, while looking at inventions during this time, I found that it wasn't always clear when they were actually invented.  Some inventions were designed long before a working product was constructed (eg. locomotive), and others had a long progression of ever-improved upon versions (eg. ironclad). Once again, we'd have to agree on what techs would be unlocked this way, and what exactly would be unlocked at what point.

  • Ah, fuck it. Let's just use 1820 tech or so, and go back to the simple system of having all our tech's effectiveness be determined by a combination of Scientific Advancement and military prowess (for war-specific tech).

Obviously, if a country enters into an agreement with another country to buy itself some good gear, then it should face some limitations. This is one area where NS stats actually make things difficult, since we can't adjust our economic stats according to big purchases.

  • I just want to suggest that timeline only should only limit how advanced things can get, and primitiveness can always exist (for example how I am training my nation) because there are even tribes and some countries today with relatively primitive technology.
