  • Long a bastion of paid subscription games, this November EVE Online will be going free to play with some caveats. As I understand free accounts will have limited access to skills and ships, but otherwise will have the run of the universe, or whatever size space they're in. :P

I've always wanted to try out this game, but my aversion to game subscriptions has prevented me from doing so. Now that it's going free to play, I was wondering if anyone would like to try it out with me in November. :)

  • Doubt my laptop can handle it, but I'll look into it as EVE always looked interesting to me.

  • To be fair this doesn't really change all that much for EVE Online IMO. Currently, IIRC, EVE Online gives you one month free and after that you have to pay...however you can pay for your subscription within in-game currency which you can get during that one month you got free...this doesn't really change all that much.

  • EVE Online requires a decent amount of time really to be able to do anything of note. EVE Online also isn't really meant for more casual players in how it goes about things.

  • Most MMOs require a decent amount of time. :P

It'll probably be like The Elder Scrolls Online...I'll play the hell out of it over my vacations in November and December, then drop it when I go back to work in January.

  • EVE Online requires a decent amount of time really to be able to do anything of note. EVE Online also isn't really meant for more casual players in how it goes about things.

I played EVE for about 4 months a year or so ago, and it does have one of the best and most realistic economies in a game I've seen, although the market has nearly crashed a few times thanks to some really large corporations (eve's equivalent of guilds).

To buy the subscription with the ingame currency first you'd have to find someone selling it, the way it works is you could ~overbuy~ your subscription since everything is handled via PLEX, since you would turn in a PLEX token in exchange for continued playing for the next month. Lot's of people sell it as a way to earn quick credits in the game. The thing about it is it's starting value is 1 billion credits... 1,000,000,000... trust me, only really large ingame corporations can even begin to pay for it. Check out the ingame market data on this stuff.

Basically it's really in-depth, but importantly it does mean that everything in the game has an effective (although tiny) equivalent cost in real world money... and since things in the game can be actually destroyed, you can get news stories like this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25944837 "Eve Online virtual war 'costs $300,000' in damage"

  • Also if you are curious on what the meta-game of the game is like.
    Video
The things shown on this guys map are player made and run corporations and regions that have purchased or conquered territories.
Does it remind anyone else of NS?

  • I've spent a good amount of time playing EVE Online (years in the past) and have been in two main corporations. I can say right now it's a very spreadsheet-like game, and that in order to gain maximum enjoyment from it, you'll want to play with friends; soloing is not that fun.

Also, be prepared to lose your stuff. If you get destroyed in EVE, you'll lose your ship and anything carried on it, and get back only insurance money (if you bothered to insure it that is).

  • It's a gameplayer's wet dream, except that I'm sure it takes more work in EVE than making a few clicks every 12 or 24 hours. :P

I was afraid that was the case, Wuufu...on the other hand, the stories that come out of the game seem absolutely epic in a way I've never heard of with other MMOs. They have to be doing something right.

  • If a bunch of us start playing, we MUST make a corporation together :D It would be awsome ^-^

Oh and, uh, I actually really enjoy "spreadsheet-like games" :)) probably because I love spreadsheets 8)

  • I would most certainly join whatever corporation you muster though I'm a trader/miner by heart and do the occasional PVE missions. I'm not much of a PvP fighter. We could also explore wormholes.

And yes, the epic things come from political maneuverings (taking down enemy corps from within), financial theft (stealing people's money, one person setup a bank and stole a lot of money from it) and giant space battles (when entire alliances, groups of corps, have it out at each other).

In some ways, it's a lot like NationStates :P
