  • Hello everyone. I am going to try and organize the first ever Wintreath Forum Based Chess Tournament. Here you can come and sign up for the tournament and read how to play. So the games will be updated as often as possible so be sure check back to see if its your turn. I will post a picture of each game after each move so you have visual representation of your chess game. Sign-ups will be left up for a week. Then I will design the tounrey bracket. HAppy playing!

  • Out of curiosity, wouldn't it be easier to use a chess website rather than have everything relayed on here and then have to post pictures of all the moves? Or is this meant to be a more spammy version since we're in the spam forum?

  • In short, yes. It would be easyer, BUT: where would be the fun in that? I mean who uses common sense? Not me! Its overrated! Who wants to do stuff the easier way!?! NAAAAHHHH!!! I wanna choose the most difficult path possible...lol

(Anyhow, I figured it might drive up the traffic of the forums. Maybe inviting non-citizens to play.)

  • The major fallback I think we had with the Hearthstone tournament was the difficulty of aligning schedules, not only for the actual players, but also for spectators. With this forum based execution we'd eliminate both problems, which would make it easier for people to participate.

I would also suggest against the traditional bracket system, as that may end up holding the tournament up. Replacing it with some sort of scoring scheme would allow the tournament to progress despite of any number of participants falling inactive.

Perhaps start with Free for All, and once some sort of order is established in certain time period break it up to small sections with bracket finals and automatic forfeits in n days in case anyone falls inactive?

Just suggestions, In any case, I'm in! I suck at chess, but it'll be fun at least for a while. :D

  • Yea im not very good either but i think it would be fun. Does anyone have a suggestion on how the scoring system should work rather then the bracket system?

  • First thing that comes to mind would be something along the lines of having three sets of statistics: games played, victories and honour. Played games and victories should be pretty self-explanatory. Beating opponents with better victory ratio would earn honour points.

(Because beating 10 amateurs should not be equal to beating 10 good players.)

Final points would be victories + honour.

  • Though I agree with you, creating the honor system, i think it will be a statistical nightmare. But I do like games played and victories. Winning in less then 25 turns gets you and extra point?

  • That would only serve to further increase the lead of the great players, not sure if doing that is necessary? :D They're likely to lead the scoreboards without additional rewards for humiliating novice players.

Purpose of honour points was to challenge people to play matches that'd be harder for them to win, a low level of matchmaking. Pretty much the opposite of rewarding speedy victories.

It's your tournament, I'll play no matter how you set your rules. :P

  • If enough games are played, we can set up a rating system. If you beat someone with a higher rating than yourself, then you gain proportionately more points than you would have if you'd beaten someone with the same rating as, or lower than yourself, and your rating would increase only slightly if you beat someone with a lower rating. And obviously, if you lose, your rating would fall based on who you lost against as well. If person A with a rating of 1300 loses against person B with a rating of 1000, then person A's rating should fall dramatically, while person B's rises dramatically.

We can award upsets in each round and everything.

So how this would work is that everyone starts with a rating of 1000, and then we go from there, with the ratings rising and falling depending on who plays against who.

Of course, if we decide just to use Chess.com (which would definitely be my preference) then all of this I've just described would be fairly automated.

  • We can play a round-robin tournament. We used to do it to determine our board order in the nationals.
