  • tatte, you mentioned earlier that it's easier to privately contact your preferred Skrifa, so why didn't that happen here?
Because, quite literally, all of the skrifa have been for it.
    EVERY
    SINGLE
    ONE
    OF
    THEM

for this session. The last session the only person that didn't support it was Hannah and she took a more apathetic approach in that election. It obviously makes it hard to contact them privately when you know that you will probably be shrugged off or not really considered...

EDIT: Corrected a mistake in my claim

  • But who voted for those Skrifa? It was obvious during the last two elections (the regular and the special election) that this issue would be the most important thing this session would deal with, and the current slate of Skrifa are who the people voted for.

Perhaps the failures in this portion of government extend to the current system, too. =/

  • While they do support it, that doesn't mean they're going to shrug it off if your opinion differs.

To say that really shows that you don't know your Skrifa very well.  :\

It's really not like Barnes, Laurentus, or even BraveSirRobin (to name the three that are probably seen the most) aren't going to listen if you were to PM them about it.  They've each shown to be very receptive to what others have to say.

Hell, wasn't North even against it at one point?

We were elected out of a constituency, a constituency who felt we were the best citizens to represent their interests. As such, the Skrifa are quite open to receiving input from the citizenry about the state of affairs, and especially myself as one of the leaders of the legislature. Yet, from those who have opposed, and even from those who have supported, I have not received even one piece of correspondence regarding the bill, or even about anything law-related, during either of my terms here. I'm bitterly disappointed and feeling slightly betrayed.

If this is how the public wants to oppose the bill, that's fine, but it only strengthens my feelings of needing an open assembly more, seeing as how with one, we can skip the entire process and go straight to the heart of debate as shown here.

  • Also Wintermoot almost ALL of the candidates in the elections for this session have been for the act...I was one of the few (if not the only one) actually campaigning against it. Thus it left people without a true 'voice'.

Further Wintermoot you might want to review posts like this where apathy begins to set in. I have also talked to HannahB,  and she has stated she has tried to speak up against it but was lambasted. She has been trying to talk, but was ignored. Eventually she just became completely apathetic and stopped speaking up because she was afraid of being lambasted again (Her words not mine). This would cause others, whom are against it, to become silent because of the same reasons. They think: "Well shit if that happens to her, then I might as well not bother." and support it, even though they don't.

(Also @HannahB can confirm what I am saying, and I am trying not to misconstrue or misrepresent her points)

  • @Pengu and @Weissreich, we were ever so close to a three-way runoff. As far as I can recall, our campaigns differed only slightly when it came to things we wanted to implement?

(I'm speaking under correction, since it feels like an eternity ago, and I couldn't view any of Pengu's recordings, because South African data prices are insane).

Actually, my implementations have normally echoed yours, and the process of an OA has been no different since I've wanted to go that way for a while and still do support it.

I just want to see this process perfected before it's implemented, and if we're having a vocal number of people coming forward speaking against it, then there's work that needs to be done...and I think some of what Weiss has suggested is the way to start.

But like I just told Wintermoot, it's also clear that we have more problems that we need to work on that aren't going to go away with the implementation of the OA, and are just going to shift to that.

So before we go in prematurely with something that sounds amazing (because it really does), we need to sit back and look at things from a different standpoint so we can get this to a place that people won't be so opposed to (especially since some people in that opposition DO support an OA, but not in its current form).

But why would they have to have a candidate with a completely differing viewpoint for that?

Any good Skrifa/Speaker knows that you follow the will of the people, not just your own opinion.  If people are speaking out against an act, then you listen to that.

The Skrifa and Speaker we have now are very excellent with that.

  • The question I have is how many people just want this to be "tweaked" further, and how many people are against an open assembly at all. I know Chanku and Hugsim are opposed to the open assembly as a concept, and I suspect that a few others are as well.

If there's a lot of opposition to the mere concept of an open assembly, it's probably not worth further discussion.

  • Are they? We have gotten to a point where people have said that they were consistently shouted down when they tried to speak out.

And personally I feel like you aren't actually listening. The opposition has been shouted down creating apathy. Further lets not pretend that any elections on here are nothing more than glorified popularity contests, for the most part. Sure they may have agreed with my position, but disagreed with how I went about doing so. They may have felt it would have been useless to vote for me. There are multiple things that could have made someone not vote for me.

  • No, I asked the question to prove a point. Our campaigns were so close, both in content and in the number of votes we got, that it baffles me that we got in, as our campaigns were quite formative for this Act, and we all agreed some things would best be added later. And yet we ended up so close together. That definitely displays that there's a huge problem with our current system too. One that prevents us from even considering an alternative, since we have to fix this problem before we have any hope of getting to an alternative anyway, since this system is supposed to lay the foundation for the next one.

Also, at Chanku, which post are you referring to there in that thread you've linked?
