Huh. I didn't know that.

Now I'm wondering what other words people consider formal/informal depending on their initial encounter. Kinda like the difference between saying "You're welcome," "No problem," and so on in response to "Thank you."

Some people consider "you're welcome" rude because it implies the speaker is fishing for compliments. (As in, when someone does something, then sarcastically says "you're welcome," to prompt the other into saying "thank you.") Meanwhile, some consider "no problem" rude because it implies the speaker thinks the item they are being thanked for to be trivial, and they don't care about the other's thanks.

I don't remember where I read that, but talks around my family seem to support it.

In french too we sometime use our "you're welcome" sarcastically, but that doesn't mean it's rude to say it when someone said "Thank you".
 It's the (If speaking not writting) tone you use that define it. If you say "you're welcome" with a smile for me it mean you're happy to have helped me.
So it depend of the context.

What I find really interesting is that may languages have a response to "thank you" similar to "no problem", such as Spanish de nada ("of nothing"), Chinese 不客气 ("don't be polite") or 不谢 ("don't thank"), etc.

Now I really wish I was bilingual.

You don't really need to know other languages to learn linguistics... (Incidentally, Tom Scott, whom I linked to above, is a linguistics major who only speaks English.)

No, not in regards to linguistics. It would just be interesting to compare and contrast them.

Chopsticks master race!

Chopsticks are great. They hurt my hand a bit, but they're better than sporks.

I haven't used chopsticks in about 3 or 4 years.

O.o that's a very long time not to use chopsticks.
