  • Since some people agree that it's becoming a more realistic possibility, let's talk about it. What would such a presidential race look like? Who would win, and who should win and why?

  • I honestly think, as a total us political junkie, that a Sanders vs Trump situation would be the greatest political race to watch since Walter Mondale decided that 1984 was a sure win.

  • It'd certainly be a very entertaining election, to be sure.  I wonder how long it'd take the populace to realise that Trump isn't really saying anything that makes sense.  Just "deport the minorities and imprison the Muslims!!" They haven't noticed yet.  It's actually a little scary, if you ask me.  I like Sanders more, definitely.  :)

  • I wouldn't be so dismissive of Trump. The way that he marries nativism and convinces people that he alone would be able to solve all the problems (without ever saying how) is very similar to the appeals that saw the Nazis get elected to power in Germany in the 1930s. Hitler promised to restore German prestige and greatness in much the same way Trump promises to 'make America great again'. I won't even get into Trump's idea to ban Muslims from entering and making those already here to register with the government. Suffice to say I think it's fearful that Trump may become the Republican nominee, much less our President.

By contrast, I'm currently supporting Sanders even over Hillary Clinton. I think if we're going to turn things around in this country we're going to have to focus on wealth inequality, and he stands as the most authentic voice on the issue as well as a slew of other issues such as civil rights. I'm not sure he'd be able to accomplish his agenda, especially if he faces a Republican Congress, but I think that if we want these sort of things to eventually happen, we have to start electing people that will fight for them and not give into the idea that we're wasting our votes by doing so.

If it comes to a contest between the two, I would hope that Sanders would win, but history makes me worry that nativism might put Trump over the top. =/

  • I don't know, I don't doubt that Trump may continue to dominate the polls, but I'm not so sure that the RNC delegates will vote for him even if he gets the most votes from primary voters. My money is on Cruz or Rubio becoming the GOP candidate.

The Democratic primary will be really close, and I think the same may happen there. Unless Bernie starts to pull ahead in the polls, the DNC delegates may vote for Hillary regardless. However, I'm still rooting for Bernie.

I don't agree with every single one of his policies, but he has moral conviction when it comes to economic inequality, civil and social rights, and the environment. He also doesn't pander or flip-flop like Hillary, he's a non-interventionist, plus he's anti-establishment, which I like.

  • Cruz and Rubio are even worse than Trump.  I'd rather have some weird Trump policies than be shipped out to a Crusade against the second largest religion in the world...

And in my opinion, I think that Bernie can win easy if he gets NH, Iowa and SC, but I don't think that he'll get South Carolina, unfortunately.  He isn't overly well known in the South, I don't think.

And I agree with Sanders on most issues, except on the decriminalisation of drugs.  I really am kind-of conservative when it comes to that.  I think that we should have more rehab, but drugs don't make are already unproductive society even less productive, not to mention that the culture that it promotes is one of momentary individual satisfaction at the expense of the whole community.  Otherwise I totally support Bernie.  He's the best.  Plus he's from Vermont.  They're basically Canadians!! :)

He's essentially a more aggressive George W. Bush with a better vocabulary...and we all know that HE made it into office for not just one, but 2 terms.  So I wouldn't write off Trump that easily.

Hillary has been shooting herself in the foot lately with what she's been doing.  I'll actually be very surprised if she gets any votes at all.

  • ^^The big worry with Hillary would be the e-mail wildcard, which doesn't bode well, especially as the State Department is asking for an extension past the date of the Iowa caucuses to release the e-mails.

If the scandal that's to a great degree been fabricated is backed up by the State Department report, that could be a problem in the general and Trump could honestly win against her (provided that happens).
