I just found out that my previous knowledge of railguns firing rounds at a top speed of Mach 7 is outdated. The US Navy has been able to achieve a top speed of Mach 10, making railguns even deadlier than I previously thought.

Even if Mach 7 were the top speed, you'd expect the future to do better, right?

I only saw the future railguns as being fast to load, fire, and reload. Also having batteries and capacitors small enough to have rifle and pistol versions while still having a quick firing rate.

They don't have any explosives though onboard—most of a railgun's effectiveness stems from the cheap cost of ammunition and the high rate of fire. Round for round, missiles are more effective, but when you adjust for price railguns blast missiles out of the water.

Railguns blast through enemy armor and tear through anything in their way, making them more effective against armored targets than any missile (barring nukes). It's true that a well placed missile can capsize a ship at sea, but with the new point-defense systems we're putting in place, railguns are our best option for putting holes in enemy ships.

In relation to spaceships, armor piercing is what you want to go with so that you can expose your enemy to the vacuum of space. Whether that be lasers, plasma, railguns, or whatever else we discover, your main goal is to open that ship up like a tin can.

Seems like Mass Effect weaponry will come in handy then.

I just realised I had very few types of class ships. So I'm going to add a little bit more. The latest ship i added was a carrier lol.
