I'm sorry, but if a majority of Americans have fallen so low as to vote Trump, then Bernie could just have forgotten about it. Bernie would have been a common sense candidate, something that is clearly lacking in modern America.

Well actually, according to Google, as of the vote counts right now, the majority voted for Clinton. Trump just got more electoral college votes.

No, the plurality voted for Clinton, not the majority. No candidate received the majority of the the popular vote.

Who first decided to use this hare-brained system? They should be dug up, reanimated, and taken out back to be shot.

That would be US Congress in 1803 who made the 12th Amendment to the US Constitution, which was then ratified by all the (at the time) 17 states governments...

Actually the Electoral College was apart of the original constitution. The 12th amendment merely changed how thry selected the President and Vice President.

The original Electoral College system was even more stupid because the Founders didn't realize that political parties would develop. In it, the second place became vice president, which of course led to some rather hostile working environments.

Also, the reason why the Electoral College (which nowadays is fucking stupid) exists is that the US was at the time much more decentralized. The idea was that each state's legislature would choose the Electors to vote for the President, and then that Congress would pick from the top five candidates. Because of the two-party system, the Congress picking part doesn't happen very often, while state legislatures eventually decided to hold popular votes to determine the Electors.

I really hope the US holds some kind of referendum or something to change that system... The combination of the electoral college and the 2 party system in the US is the perfect storm to create things like a Trump presidency...

I really hope the US holds some kind of referendum or something to change that system... The combination of the electoral college and the 2 party system in the US is the perfect storm to create things like a Trump presidency...

There is no way this is going to happen. Both parties of decades upon decades of infrastructure dedicated to campaigning in swing states, and they won't welcome a change in the status quo. The Constitutional amendment process is intentionally very difficult, and considering that the Republicans have just won both the executive and the legislature under this system (and soon, the judiciary as well), they're unlikely to get this through.

The closest thing we have to a solution is the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. Basically, the states that sign on agree to award all their electoral votes to the popular vote winner if more the total electoral votes in the states that have signed up reach 270 (enough to gain a majority in the Electoral College). That way, they bypass the Constitutional requirement for an amendment. You might notice, however, that all the states that have signed on are Democratic safe states. Republicans have already benefited twice now in recent memory from the Electoral College, and are not going to be very willing to change that.

What does a referendum entail? Are people pretty much at the mercy of the parties to get that done? If so, the system ensures it's impossible.

Oh and I forgot to mention, amendments to the US Constitutions cannot be done by referendum. They either must be approved by two-thirds of both the House and Senate, or be approved by a constitutional convention called for by two-thirds of the states. And then three-fourths of the state legislatures must approve it.

Most of the armed militia groups are right-wing groups that sprung up during the Obama years. In them, Trump would have an existing paramilitary force if it came to that...not to mention that it's possible he would have the support of the actual military.

An successful armed revolution against Trump is even less likely than a constitutional amendment ending the Electoral College.

Thomas Jefferson believed that there should be an armed insurrection at least once every generation. "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

Of course, he had the benefit of not living in today's world of fantastic military power...at the time he wrote that, farmers could pick up their muskets and launch an insurrection. Not so easy today.

Armed revolution doesn't necessarily mean guns, tanks and armed hill-billies.

If you can find a way to kill everyone in the white house all at once, with some sort of chemical weapon (science fuck yeah), then you stand a much better chance, and it's much more calculated. Then just proceed to make all succeeding politicians' lives hell.

For god's sake, I do hope people realise I'm not serious. Mostly.
