Long story short though, on Monday a Muslim student in Texas who has an interest in creating electronics and robotics and has won awards for it brought a homemade clock to his school. Suspecting it to actually be a bomb, teachers confiscated it and called the police on him, so then arrested him, took him to a juvenile detention facility, fingerprinted him, and took mug shots. The charges were dropped after it was found to be a clock as he had tried telling them, but even then the school suspended him for three days.

I can understand how some people may have seen it as suspicious, and obviously if you see something that's suspicious you're going to call police instead of trying to handle it yourself, but at some point it had to be discovered that there was no way this was a bomb, and to put someone through that experience...we're supposed to be encouraging people that are interested in things like this, not arresting them. And he was still suspended from school to boot...he's still being punished for...pursing an interest in electronics and wanting to show it off at school?

The question is...would a white Christian been subjected to this sort of treatment?

Hell no. Discrimination at its finest. This really is the type of thing that makes Muslims hate America more.

Agreed.  That is way crossing the line, there.  If it was any other student, they wouldn't have been subjected to that one.  It's things like this that make me ashamed of this country...we really should know better than that.  <_<

Well, it is Texas. The only place in the United States where I was told by a cop to "stop talking so funny".

If only it were just Texas...some comments to the news story from people where I live, West Virginia:

you people didn't know the Muslim " religion " supports and backs the largest terrorist organization in the world, therefore people have every right not to trust them and anyone that would willingly back them has serious mental issues. If what the boy was make a harmless science project then they went to far, but you have to ask yourself why he would make a clock when generally they go hand in hand with bombs.

This the great founder of Facebook and the POS in Washington speak out on... instead of PC standing for political correct it needs to stand for public toilet because they are flushing this country down the drain...

This is just radical Islam testing their boundaries. These people know no limits, they don't care if it's men,women,children, they don't care. They will see how far they can go and if you don't believe/see it then just sit back and watch. I've dealt with and lived among these people.

Anther false flag event? To get people going about being racist to Muslims, and eventually allowing them to pour into our country. BC if we dont, we are racist. Then when we are plum full of terrorist, and getting blown up every other day, y'all gonna regret defending Islam. Religion of war.

I once wondered how nutjob politicians got elected to their offices, but the truth of the matter is there are a lot of nutjob people that elect them. Those people are probably all Trump supporters.

It's so stupid but you guys must be (because I am) so tired about hearing shit like this happen all the time.

I'm just so glad that social media - everyone, not just the tech moguls, though that helped - came out to support him, otherwise I wonder if the media would've paid any attention to this at all.

Take the handcuffs off of him, and give him a scholarship instead.

A similar case reported in the Washington Post earlier this year, where a student in Virginia was suspended for a year for bringing a leaf that looked like marijuana...even after it tested negative and turned out to be a leaf from something else. The school's justification was that because it looked like marijuana it counted as an 'imitation' drug, which has the same penalties as bringing the real thing.

It's moments like these that I appreciate living in South Africa, even with my country's numerous other flaws.

But I have noticed that people who take to commenting on the internet are a very insane, vocal and extreme minority. I don't know what it is about the web that attracts these idiots. Perhaps the anonymity.

Hmm. Perhaps the idea that they don't have to deal with the repercussions of the filth that comes out of their mouths like they would have to in an actual face-to-face encounter then.

It's just West Virginia...I doubt many people would disagree in real-life here. =/

It's partly that for some when it's not facebook attached, and it's partly because they know that some of the people that they say those comments to will never be able to actually confront them face to face.  And sometimes even on Facebook people will use false names and hide their pictures just so they can commence with their idiotic commenting.

I always love reading the uproar in comments that always happens from idiots when LGBT issues arise.  And by love I mean I'm actually a little sad with some of the comments I see.  Like things such as this, they can be mean, to downright nasty, to absolutely vile sometimes.

In all seriousness, I'm not surprised by this - I'm not saying the kid deserved it or got what was coming, but if someone had asked me, "Do you think a Muslim kid named Ahmed Mohammed would be arrested because he brought some homemade gadget to school?" the answer would be pretty obvious to anyone living in the US. 

The most revealing part of this for me is the posts attempting to justify his arrest.  I was on the right-wing side of Facebook for about 15 minutes and it made my head spin.  This image is repeatedly shared and pointed to as evidence that this little fucker wanted to cause panic and deliberately made his clock look like a bomb out of TV.  Let me spell out that logic again:

We know what bombs look like because we see them on TV.
This kid made something that looks like a bomb from TV.
It must be a bomb.
