There are two kinds of members: those who use simple username and those who choose to use full names like "Maija Meikäläinen". Staying on track who the latter are can sometimes get tricky, so I suggest a feature that'd separate these RP-style names from the usernames. (A single character @handle system if you're a gamer.)

Both names would be shown in posts but only usernames would be shown elsewhere (forum structure pages, for example on the front page). This would also benefit the @mention system.

How exactly would this work? Would someone be able to change both their username and roleplay name?

In a perfect world one could only change their username with the permission from you. Otherwise this would be utterly useless.

So you'd have an RP name and a base Username... The RP name you could change at will and the username would stay the same unless you go through an administrator...
So for instance: Maxwell Smart would be Pengu's RP name and Pengu would be his username...

For a mention we would always say @Pengu but for casual purposes we could just say Maxwell... Could be useful because right now you can change just about everything how people recognize you, 'sides your member number...

This actually already exists behind the scenes...there's the username that one can change, and a 'realname' that is the name that the person registered with. realname is only used behind the scenes though.

Goddamn it, @Gabriel (Pengu), change your name back to Pengu, or fully embrace Gabriel, for crying out loud.

Everytime I see someone misremembering how to properly mention your unwieldy nickname, it drives me insane, since it just screams impracticality.

This is why we need two separate systems. I appreciated A LOT what Pengu did but given how it messes up the @notification system I can also understand the other side.

Would it be possible for the mention system to work on the registration name, and for the registration name to show up in a new field underneath the avatar, perhaps? That way, the person can always change their nick, but have the registration name there for easy reference and mentioning.

I think it would be best if the nick that works with the @notifications is the more visible one, so it causes as little confusion with the new members as possible.

I think Laurentus was suggesting that it work with both.

He was, and if I'm interpreting this correctly, he feels we should also have the registration name in the box that says one's role, Wintreath nation, and familial house, for example.
