  • Thought about my life, realized I'm very probably a sociopath. How fun.
Having met you in real life and known you here for at least two years likely more...
    You're REALLY not a sociopath...

  • I highly doubt you're a sociopath given your interactions here. :P

In any case, so far my day is ok...woke up, started doing some region stuff, played a game of Age of Empires II and confirmed that I still suck at RTS games...and now I'm here. xD

  • I really slept in today, waking up at noon...that closely resembles my natural schedule when it's not constantly interfered with by work though, so it was actually nice. Now I'm picking a Civ to play for today's game...I had my heart set on Babylon until @Reon told me he didn't have that DLC so it can't be played. :(

  • I'm sorry! I thought I totally had it before but a couple days ago I was playing around in the store and it appears I don't!

I guess I'll have to go with Korea or the usual Egypt then!

I miss Judo myself. My right knee has not been in a state fit for Judo, wrestling or parkour for more than two years now.

The surgeon has recently told me that I should just give up on the idea of returning to those activities altogether, with the state of my meniscus being at the point where further surgery won't help me in the slightest, and and next step being to remove it completely. Structurally, my meniscus apparently resembles someone's who has had quite horrible, repeated injuries in rugby matches to that particular part of the knee.

A shame really, the rolls I learnt in wrestling and Judo were quite applicable in parkour.

  • I didn't do it for very long. I did it as a sport for three years, starting at age 15, but I knew a bit about it from a very young age, as my father taught me a bit about it while I was growing up. I had gotten to the point where I was quite good, but not excellent.

And that's the thing, no single injury is responsible for my knee. It seems it was structurally weak to begin with, and these impact activities just gradually made it weaker. I had a series of small injuries over the course of my rugby-playing days in school, and one day while playing soccer in gym class, I collided quite badly with another student and a part of my meniscus broke off. I didn't realise it at the time though, and the loose peace wreaked havoc in my knee undetected until I merely crouched one day, and felt the tiny bit lock my knee up. Initially I thought I had dislocated my knee, but later found out the truth.

I also have rheumatoid arthritis, but that only recently began flaring up in my other joints, so while it does my knee no favours, I don't think it's what caused my knee to become so weak.

  • Damn. Though knee injuries are quite common in judo so you probably would've ate the dust regardless if your knee was weak to begin with. I've been doing it for 7 years now. It's a really fun sport, but not gentle on the body, ignore all the propaganda. I broke my left collarbone thrice in the practice of the "gentle art".

I just came back from practice again. Bloodied a guy's nose inadvertently. I was mounted and he was new (and huge, you know the type of guy for whom strength beats all comers) so he tried a cross choke, and to teach him you shouldn't do that, I broke one of his grips with my right knee then spun around for the armbar. Thing is he raised his head (to roll on his belly, which doesn't do anything most of the time because you can just follow but people think it does) just as I was lowering my left leg and my heel got him square in the nose.

He bitched a bit but this is a combat sport, not ballet. Shit happens.

  • Indeed, the medics at every tournament aren't there for show. I was fortunate not to get any major injuries to my knee while I did it, but elbows, shoulders, wrists and many other joints were fair play. One simply doesn't do a full-contact sport and expect to walk out unscathed.

I suppose I could consider myself lucky that my knee became busted outside of judo. A typical judo injury might have damaged my knee far worse than anything that happened to it naturally. Still, it sucks to find out that no matter how strong or athletic I am, my knee would never have allowed me to become truly great at it anyway.
