Discussion: Implementing the Krone

  • Back in the spring, we adopted a regional currency, the Krone, and I would like to go about implementing it soon. Having a regional currency will open up a lot of potential with both cultural and government activities, but I would like to avoid the pitfalls of many other regions where the currency has no value and just accumulates because there's little you can do with it.

    Therefore, I would like to open discussion on specific proposals to implement the Krone in the region...what should people gain Krone for? What should they be able to spend it on? What should the value of the currency be?

  • This is probably unworkable, but what about something akin to Monopoly?

  • As in, we set up a regional monopoly game, and we can use our Krone(s?) to invest in it. We get Krone(s) by contributing to the region, and we can lose or gain some by taking part in the monopoly game.

    Like I said, it's probably not workable, but it would be an interesting experiment.

  • Is there any scope for a regional stock market? It could be linked to a real life stock exchange or alternatively, just our own little thing with commodities and  simple things like that instead of real life companies. I have no idea how you could implement that though, it would require a lot of effort for the operator.

    You could win the currency as a cash prize for regional games and tournaments.

  • Here's some ideas:

    *You can gain little amounts of Krone for posting anywhere.
    *You can spend Krone on campaigning for Underhusen Elections (IE: for graphics and things like that)
    *You can gain Krone for winning contests and competitions or even games like Werewolf
    *You can lose Krone when spending it on something like a Lottery type of thing.
    *You can gain Krone for winning the lottery
    *You can donate Krone to other members.
    *Members can of course donate it to you
    *Houses can have a "Rent" system to where members of houses pay a certain amount of upkeep each month.

    Those are just some ideas, but there's always much more that can be done with it that I just can't think of at the moment.

  • Well really, I think an automatic payment per month system for any government type roles or jobs (Underhusen, Jarls/Thanes, Overhusen, Recruiters, Military,etc...) would be a good idea.  Really any type of job on here can be grueling at times, and I think a payment system would be a fine idea.

    The problem would be having a balancing sink system for this.  Everything else I listed has a balancing sinker, so one would have to be considered for this as well.

  • @Laurentus - I still don't understand the Monopoly thing...do you mean a minigame seperate from general Wintreath stuff?

    @Pengu - This is meant to be an ongoing discussion rather than something that has to be completed soon, so please post any other ideas you have when you think of them. I'm curious about the house idea though...if it's something they have to pay rent on, what benefit would houses have? I'm assuming that you mean actual houses and not families. :P

    @Chanku - I'm not for giving currency to people just for having positions, but I imagine it would be so much for every operation done, or so much for every nation successfully recruited, and so forth.

  • Yes, it was a half-formed idea. Pengu came close to what I had in mind with the Houses idea.

    The thing that has continuously bothered me with a currency and payment system, even with lotteries and other silly ways to gain/lose money, is that it doesn't actually mean anything in a real sense, so if it's not going to be used for something fun and meaningful like an RP or game (like what Pengu suggested with the Houses, but with the possibility of expanding a House's assets in RP-ish situations, or possibly even losing some when bad decisions have been made and people have had rotten luck, like in real life and monopoly) then there is absolutely no reason to have it apart from just adding another layer for the sake of adding it. If we want to use it to motivate people to contribute, it would have to become relevant in some big way to something we all enjoy, i.e. forum games and RPs, or a mixture of the two.

    The problem with this is that no one can completely agree on the implementation when trying to make it mean something.

  • I'd like to just throw in a general warning against payment systems.  They're very difficult to maintain and keep running smoothly.  We tried something like that in Aura Hyperia, and managing the payroll became a full-time job in itself.

    This is an important point - we don't want to get carried away with the complexity of the system.  I think a simple regional minigame or lottery is an excellent way to introduce Krone.  In fact, I think a lottery should be the first thing to be introduced.  Give everyone a uniform amount, and then open up a lottery.  Tiered rewards or a jackpot, whatever, but it will serve to introduce people to the system and create a bit of a market.

  • Perhaps maybe get an add-on that has blackjack or something? You could make it so you bet Krones. I made this suggestion in RIA like, last year. It's not the most popular thing over there, but they do use it. Nothing like a little gambling to shake things up. :D

  • Gambling was one of the uses I have wanted this for eventually. :D

    Starting out I would like to focus on Krone transactions themselves...you get krone for x, you can spend it on y, for example. Eventually I imagine we'll do things like minigames and gambling, but those are whole systems to code unto themselves...so I'll probably start by implementing the simpler transaction-based stuff. :P
