  • Separate from the competition, this topic is to talk about all things Hearthstone! Discuss the game, decks, cards, classes, your last game, anything having to do with it! I'll start. ^.^

I don't really get the warrior classes...I tried to play it, but I couldn't get any wins over two hours, because the class has little mob control. Time and time again I was quickly outnumbered on the field, and I was forced to choose between going for their hero and ignoring all the damage their mobs were doing, or sacrificing my minions to try to gain some sort of control. Neither strategy worked, by the way. The wiki says you can use your hero for mob control, but the hero weapons I have access to seem to be weak and don't last very many turns...I just dunno. Anyone have any experience playing warrior?

  • This is gonna sound counterproductive, but Hearthstone sucks. It really does. If we can talk about all things Hearthstone then I can write about how much Hearthstone sucks. I don't understand how that game is so popular.

It's a piss-poor pay to win excuse for a card game. It's too bad because I love TCG-inspired video games, hell I have YGO and Pokemon decks IRL (too poor for Magic) and I used to play them a lot. But there's no excuse for being so P2W. Worst part is that at least you can drop $200-250 for a YGO deck IRL that will reliably win you matches (I have Heroic Challenger, Masked Heroes and Evol stun decks because I'm a huge asshole), and you can pay maybe $75 for a Pokemon deck that will do the same (I use Exeggvile, bunch of Exeggcutes + Weaviles with Vilify), but on Hearthstone, you could pay $500 and not even have the cards you need for a great deck. Once you get high level enough you just face decks stacked with legendaries and mechs and yeah, you can win, but it requires a ginormous amount of luck. However, you can play Dueling Network or YGOPro for YGO and not pay a single cent to have all the cards you need since they are all unlocked.

The mechanics are basically Magic without all the rules that made Magic cool so the experience ends up feeling bland and uninspired, kind of like a video game based on a movie, except it's a card game based on a video game. The card pool is pretty damn shallow as well and as with all card games, not all cards are good so there isn't a lot of stuff to play with. There are comparatively few great HS decks while PTCG and YGO (especially the latter) have tons.

I'd rather play YGOPro or even PTCGO over fucking Hearthstone : MtG for dummies. PTCGO is a bit pay to win too but at least the game showers you with free booster packs, its 4 free decks are full of staple cards like N or Bikes and if you want to buy boosters, they're not even a dollar a pop for 10 cards. I would play the Magic games on Steam but they have even worse card lists than Hearthstone does, which is puzzling considering how many fucking Magic cards there are.

Most of all though, I'd rather play TCGs IRL and see my guy rage when I get Masked Hero Dark Law out on the field, ruining his entire deck.

  • I actually don't think it's as pay to win as many games I've seen out there...it's true that paying can get you cards faster, but you can still earn gold from quests and apply them towards anything you can pay for. I have to admit I'm not an expert at card games, and I'm still fairly new at this, but so far I haven't ran into an instance where I've just been completely outclassed by an opponent where I'd say they definitely paid to beat me. Usually it's just concern that I'm not playing the class right or the class is under-powered...thus my questions about warriors.

I think it's a nice game that new and casual players can easily get into, and I think it was a smart business decision for Blizzard to make the game like they did.

  • I'm gonna pop in and say that this game is assuredly pay to win... As someone who lives with and watches a pay to win player... He dropped the hot dough and was immediately able to entirely and completely destroy almost all the people he went against for a continuous hour... And it wasn't even because of like clever deck building he just had flat out better cards...

  • Thus far I haven't ran into anyone that's just wiped the floor with me cause they just had better cards, so people like that must be very rare...

  • I have to say I disagree completely that Hearthstone is pay to play. I've paid a good amount in my deck, and I still only get a 50/50 win/loss ratio. Paying doesn't give you anything more than more cards to play with and more choice when crafting decks, and it's the skill in picking the right cards that work good in a combo, no matter what cards you have, that is the real skill.

Not to mention that because of the different play styles of the nine classes available, a deck that works for some of the classes won't necessarily work against others. I've found my Priest deck can win most of the time against some classes, like the Mage and the Warrior, and lose most of the time against others, like the Hunter and the Shaman.

Because I wanted to, why else? :P

Seriously though, it was mainly to get a small boost in choice of cards when I started putting together my first deck. I think I spent about £10 on it, and since then I've got cards through gold and so haven't bothered with any other purchase of cards. I have bought one of the single player campaigns though, that was fun to play.

  • I've been playing Hearthstone for a few months now (September of last year maybe?) and I am yet to come across anyone that has outclassed me simply because they had better cards. Admittedly my main deck Does not reflect how long I've been playing because of my unwillingness to do quests requiring me to use the warlock class, which by the way is simply too self-destructive & I cannot get the hang of it. :P

  • I guess I'm just adverse to spending money on a game like this. :P

    For me it's either I can't get used to the class, or I just don't get the right cards at the right time. Sometimes even with a great deck you just get unlucky. ;-;

So true! It's also about the luck of the draw as well, and using the right cards at the right moment for the right threat.

  • Maybe the mana cost decreases once for every turn you tell your significant other that you love them.

  • I played a fun game last night...we were both to the point where we were out of cards in our hand and were both near death, so we were playing whatever cards we drew, though I had a two cards held back. They play Abomination, which is kinda a sucky card to have to play against (Taunt + 2 damage to all minions on death). I bring out the Spellbreaker I had been holding back, silence it...removing both effects, and my opponent concedes immediately afterwards. ^.^

Also starting a paladin deck, since it'll help me with quests and I can manage victories on it reasonably well. :)
