  • Hello there :) I hope this isn't out of place or already been done to death before  :-\ . But after seeing the recent poll and a few recent posts on the RMB, I got to thinking what is everyone here's favourite gaming platform (i.e. PC, PlayStation, Xbox, ect...) and what's your favourite genres of games (i.e. FPS, RPG, Simulation, ect...) :) . Also even if said platform or genre is your fav, is it the one you use/play most often?

Personally I am, pretty much, exclusively a PC gamer  :) , and my genre would be Strategy which (while it sounds vague) sums up what I play...  that being everything from Turn Based, to RTS, to Grand Strategy, to City Builders, and everything in-between  ;) . I get that most people find these kind of games dull but I just can't get enough of them  8) , and I do play the odd survival or FPS as well but my heart is in the strategy :)

So anyways enough about me, what do people here like? (if it's OK to ask  :-\ )

  • That'd be Xbox 360. It's by far not the one I use the most, but it is the one I go to when I want to take a step away from daily routines.

I have also had Playstation 3 and Wii, neither of those came even close to the amenity X360 provides. Nintendo 2DS is a strong competitor, but since I spend most of my time here at home, portability becomes more of a hindrance than an advantage. (Holding something you both use with your hands and watch isn't very ergonomic in the long run.)

While PC is by far superior platform in pretty much every way, it falls to the curse of modern days: the human need to be connected all the time. Sure, it's definitely possible to turn off all the social blocks of every program you use, but it's just so much easier to turn the whole pc off and walk away.

It has been a long time since I put enough effort into gaming to actually have a favourite genre. My answer used to be strategy, but nowadays I just drift from game to game, regardless of genre. Casual is the big word right now.

    Thanks for the response! :)

I agree, the often forced connectivity can be a real pain :( . I mean when you want it it's great, but the rest of the time it's a real hindrance. Best example I can think of would be the newest Simcity, which I was (naively  :-\ ) looking forward to pre-launch, I had to install origin and set up all this EA account crap and then I can hardly even run it even though my PC is pretty good, it lagged to high heaven cause my internet connection was pretty crap and congested back then :(

Though I am still a PC Gamer, mainly out of a weird sense of tradition, but also I honestly find a mouse and keyboard so much easier and more intuitive than Analogue sticks, D-pads and controller :s and of course I already have a PC and can't be bothered paying for a console  ;)

But I can totally see all the benefits of consoles: ease of access and easy to work; no need to install just buy a game and play it; split-screen with friends; I think they are cheaper than good PCs as well; =D all great things just not enough to win me over... yet :)

  • My favorite is still the PS1 and 2 for their library of games alone compared to the newer consoles.

Currently, I own a PS2, 3, and 4.  I'm starting to slowly get into the groove of enjoying my PS4 a bit more, although it's difficult when you're confined to so few games at a time (I'm up to 18 and only have space for 1 more non-indie title before I run out).  I like that they upped the size of the hard drive to 500GB, but it's a little sad when on the PS3 I can have:

    *47 disc-titles
*22 non-indie digital titles (IE titles that are 1 gig or more)
    *32 PS1 titles
    *8 Indie/smaller titles
*All DLC for 15 of the titles
*installed game data for about 7 of the 40 disc titles.

And despite the fact that the average non-indie digital title is at least 3+ gigs, I still have 40 gigs free on my harddrive, and it's literally half the size of my PS4 harddrive.

So we're talking I have over 109 titles on my PS3 and still have room to spare, and only 40 of those are indie/smaller titles under 1 gig.

Whereas on my PS4, I have 39 GB left currently, but have only 18 games on it total with an average of 20GB being taken up by each one (obviously some are much higher, some are lower, but the average outcome for each came out to 20.23 GB).  Nothing outside of Minecraft is under a gig, and 8 of those 18 games are disc games, since they're now installing data from all games including disc based ones, and the average disc-game with updates installed is going to be well over 20 gigs...with Dragon Age Inquisition (45 gb required minimum, 50 if it's the Deluxe Edition), Bloodborne (41GB required minimum), Last of Us Remastered, and Evil Within (both 50 GB required minium) being the biggest offenders in my case.

The biggest advantage I think gamepads have over keyboard+mouse is compactness. They don't require a table for comfortable use. Gamepads lose 6-0 until you want to wrap a blanket around you and curl into the corner of a couch. ^-^ There are also a good number of games that are not half that bad with gamepads, less obvious examples would be Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

I don't want to sound too much like a console fanboy, I enjoy both worlds. On my list for this summer are currently getting an Xbox One and a new graphics card. I have slowly been falling behind on graphics. (Fun fact you might appreciate, a few years back when I purchased 9800GTX+ I used Tiberium Wars as a benchmark to see if the new card would be adequate. Too bad it was the final proper C&C game. :-\)

Well, and considering how many PC games these days support game pads, it's obvious more people are flocking to them even for PC gaming.  Heck, some games like Diablo 3, even on the PC, are designed to work much better with a game pad than a keyboard and mouse (whereas the previous two titles were the exact opposite).

Somehow I failed to even consider this, I'll have to give D3 a try with a controller. :D I have had a receiver for a while now but haven't really tried that many games, Steam tags controller friendly games but half the time the actual supporting is questionable at best..

  • Before I was diagnosed with epilepsy I absolutely loved playing my XBOX. I had Halo, Mech Assault, Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, Spy Hunter and 007 Agent Under Fire. Before XBOX though I played my N64, where Goldeneye 007 was my favorite game for the system. WWF No Mercy was a close second though. Most of my childhood however was dominated by the Sega Genesis. It is my all-time favorite platform. I had way too many games to remember, but my favorite game for it was Gauntlet IV. It took me 13 years to beat it (I eventually had to resort to emulators.)

Nowadays I either play the 3DS or use my PC. Mostly my PC since emulators let me play so many different platforms. I've got over 250GB of games sitting around, although I couldn't hazard a guess as to how many titles because I've got a large amount of Gameboy/GBC/GBA games, A handful of PC games and an undetermined amount of games for every system up to Playstation. If I were to estimate I'd say there is a minimum of 100 different games in my possession thanks to emulation.

Shooters, Strategy, MMO's, RPG's and Racing games and any sort of puzzle games are my favorites. I don't really favor one over the other.

I prefer to use a game pad. I use a Logitech controller whenever possible. :)

Mainly it's just paying attention to the gameplay and interface.  Some MMOs like WoW for example, given the enormous menu options to access spells/abilities, are better suited for the PC since you can hotkey practically everything.  Even DC Universe is better suited for the PC for similar reasons, despite it being out on consoles as well.

Likewise, as much as I enjoy having point and click games on the consoles (Walking Dead, Back to the Future, ETC...) it's quite obviously not the same using a game pad to slowly move a cursor around, as opposed to moving it far quicker with an actual mouse.

And in the reverse, games like Dragon Age, Diablo 3, The Evil Within, and Alice: Madness Returns (the original was better on a PC in ways) may be fun to play on the PC with a keyboard and mouse, but once you pop in a game controller, it almost becomes obvious that the game was more or less made to suit the controller rather than they keyboard and mouse combo.

  • Hold on, Diablo 3 doesn't natively support a gamepad on PC? I can't find any settings to let me choose a gamepad and quick Googling seems to confirm this. Having to install third party software is just bullshit..

  • The first and last console I had was a Super Nintendo...I got my first computer when I was 8, and I've been a PC gamer ever since. For me I think it's because our family couldn't afford to have both a computer and a console, and at the time the PC was more versatile and had cheaper games (a SNES cartridge was $50 compared to $5-$10 for a PC disk). In fact, it's only been the last few years that I could afford actual gaming computers/parts...or just anything better than a Compaq Presario. :P

I don't know that I have a favourite genre, but I tend to drift toward RPGs and turn-based strategy games. I especially like RPGs that offer a lot of variety in how you can build your character or play the game, and I like turn-based strategy games because for me it feels like it's more about the strategy and not about speed-clicking. I can play RTS games, I'm just not very good at it because it depends more on speed. I also like games with a social component, cause I like to play games with friends, but at the same time I don't really care for games where you have to interact with strangers, which counts out games like League of Legends for me unless I can find enough people for the team to only be people I know.

There's so many people who play this goddamn game so frequently that is almost always possible, come on... I haven't queued up without at least one other person in almost a year.
