  • However, NationStates is a long-term game, with regions that have been around a decade...and I hope someday that Wintreath will be one of them. One year is very reasonable just to satisfy historical curiosity, I would think.

  • The hope that NS would be around for another 10 years is quite unfathomable to me.

  • I don't see why.

Unlike other games, the thing that keeps people playing isn't the graphics or the gameplay, but the community and the metagame the communities have applied to it. By being so basic, NationStates can be anything to anyone, depending on their tastes. To us, it's a platform to build a community, to particulate in a mock government, and to make friends and have fun. To a roleplayer, it's a chance to build an entire story and mechanic around their basic nation. And to yet others, it's an opportunity to practice and flex their political skills...though I for one don't care for that side of it. :P

And most importantly, none of those things will ever become obsolete. People in general aren't having less fun than they were ten years ago, although of course individuals will gain and lose interest over time. It's uncertain if any one of us will be here, and debatable whether Wintreath can stand that test of time, but I think it's safe to say that NS will still be around, unless they decide to just pull the plug...in which case someone will probably make a clone that people will move to. :P

  • I could see Hobbes making a clone if they did do that. Or someone else I may not know of.
I just don't see why. I mean, this game has been going on for almost a decade and a half. You really think this game could last 25 years? That would be phenomenal. I just don't see it happening.
I for one can not say, nor can anyone I spose', if they will be here in 10 years. I didn't know, of course, that I would return to this game, on and off as I have, in the past 10 years either. So...who knows?
I just think a year to declassify things is a bit long. I'm actually not up for classifying things unnecessarily anyway. I think the Riskad should be held accountable for what they say. It makes people think when they are held accountable for their words.

  • As long as new people are getting interested in the game and replacing people who have lost interest, it can last indefinitely. The irony is by some standards NS may be the perfect game...one that requires little development or attention and yet makes plenty of money, especially since stamps were introduced last year. It's something that almost runs itself.

My purpose in making this decree wasn't for the Riksråd to be "held accountable"...by design, the Riksråd is only accountable to me to begin with. My purpose was to provide for greater general transparency, give insights into how the Cabinet works, and to satisfy historical curiosity about events in our region's past. And I want to point out again that this is one of the most progressive policies in all of NationStates, and I think that's something extraordinary that we should be proud of. It's disappointing that some people aren't happy with it...

  • You can't be disappointed people don't always agree with you. If they did this would be a non-functional monarchy.

  • I'm sorry. I've tried typing several replies to that, but they all come off as extraordinarily pissy so I'm just going to acknowledge that I've read your post.

  • Also, people are still playing like the first d&d over other kinds... Just yesterday I played a card game, XXXenophile, which hasn't been printed in some time because I have an eclectic enough friends who consider that their favorite car game... Things run for a long fucking time when they are as basic a premise as nationstates.

It's disappointing when there is room for improvement and you are unwilling to improve it.  Jonewest has a fair and valid point above.  A year is still too long.

  • And yet it's infinitely sooner than 99.9% of gameplay regions that don't release Cabinet discussions at all. When put in that context, it's not a fair and valid point, it's simply a few people always wanting more.

Actually it is.  One year is a bit of an unreasonable wait.  Six months as Stark suggested above would be more reasonable and logical :)

  • Gov, just because it's your opinion doesn't automatically make it "reasonable and logical". Please quit claiming that every time someone doesn't agree with you.

There are no regions that release discussions that soon...even The South Pacific, which refers to itself as the oldest democracy in NationStates and is the only other region with a sunshine policy as far as I know, releases their discussions after eight months. That and the fact that the vast majority of regions do not do this at all shows just how balanced and extraordinary this policy is to begin with just in the fact that it exists.

I have always tried my best to accommodate the wishes of everyone in the region, and this policy is a product of that while also balancing the need for a private Cabinet to discuss regional affairs. I feel that it's the right balance, so I will not be changing the length of time. I regret if that makes some people unhappy.

Other regions don't believe in transparency, and while it's good on TSP's part, we can strive to be better than those regions and TSP.  There is always room to improve, and I don't see anything wrong with improving things as opposed to keeping things stagnant.
