  • American higher education is very flexible, and it needs to be.  Transfer students are extremely common.

Case law is a huge part of my studies, with entire classes seemingly dedicated to it.  We pay particular attention to issues related to the 4th Amendment (freedom from unreasonable search and seizure), since it's the most applicable from a law enforcement standpoint.  Equally important is 6th/14th Amendments - due process and fair trials.  There are really simple things a police officer can do to fuck up a defendant's due process rights and have their case thrown.

I don't even mind reading opinions, I don't think they're too boring, but I just wish the judges/justices issuing them would be just a tad more specific.  Contradictory rulings are everywhere, and nobody seems to want to set a hard line for anything (save a few exceptions).  It's frustrating, especially when you ask a question and the professor's answer is, "What's the case law say?"

I DON'T FUCKING KNOW, THAT'S WHY I'M ASKING.  I WANT YOU TO TELL ME SINCE YOU'VE BEEN DOING THIS FOR HALF YOUR LIFETIME.

  • I don't know, I actually kinda like professors who force me to research the subject and draw my own conclusions. :P

It does get tiresome when you've spent a whole bloody week trying to come up with an answer and failing, and he answers my question with such a question. I scream internally when that happens.

Why do you study what you're studying?

    Friends, not food.

I've wanted to go into law enforcement since meeting my Uncle Max (a local cop) when I was like 10 years old.  He was a mystery to me in several ways.  Then, learning more about the profession and its role in society, I saw that I would never be completely satisfied with working for a company or business, where my goals are increasing revenues or making whatever more efficient.  It seemed much more worthwhile to devote my time to making people feel safe, giving back to my community, and helping people when they need it most, and law enforcement allows me to do that and carry a fucking gun YEE HAW!  ...sorry.

Anyway, educated cops use less force in general, receive less complaints, live longer, make more money, advance their careers farther, etc. etc. etc.

  • I'd be selling myself short if I didn't at least try when the opportunity presents itself. If I don't end up there, I don't think I'll be hugely disappointed.

  • It's important to set high goals for yourself.  What do you see yourself doing if you don't make it to the FBI?

  • I'd be happiest working for a large law enforcement agency with a wide jurisdiction. I want to experience a community in a way like no other.

The only real answer is boxers.

  • Have you ever thought of become a real life legislator?
We understand how dangerous a mask can be. We all become what we pretend to be. We all wear masks, and the time comes when we cannot remove them without removing some of our own skin.

  • Ive never given it extended thought until now, no. I enjoy debating bills and drafting them and considering their merits, but I don't think I'm cut out for it. It's actually difficult for me to think critically about legislation; I feel that it comes a lot slower to me than it does to others. Also, I would loathe everything about elections, fundraising, and the other parts of being a politician.

  • Ideally, if you could get into the FBI, which type of crimes would you want to investigate?

Note that I'm asking in complete ignorance of the way it works with American law enforcement.

  • If I had the power to choose, I would dedicate my time to investigating crimes against children. I've taken a few classes dedicated to that topic, and sometimes it gets hard to sit through the entire discussion. A person I was very close with was victimized as a child, and it just makes my blood boil thinking about it.  I would do anything I could to help people like her.

  • Probably not.  I do support enforcing the standards and professional integrity and all that, but I don't think I would get satisfaction from it.  I suppose it would depend on the workplace - my feelings towards coworkers, administration, the policies themselves, etc.
