We only had one dedicated computer software store, Software Etc...places like Wal-Mart had the latest computer games of course, but if you wanted variety or something older that's where you had to go. It's there where I bought and discovered games like Civ, Lords of the Realm, Fallout, the Talonsoft wargames, and even Pizza Tycoon (which was old even then and was on two 3-1/2 floppies, lol.)

At some point though it became a Gamestop that only sold console games...a sad day.

I'm beginning to think that we're roughly the same age. Software Etc. is the store I remember haunting as a young teen - along with Radio Shack.

I remember visiting Radio Shack, mostly when I had a shit cheap computer and dreamed of having something better. I would play with the display computers, lol.

I missed the mark badly then. I will be 45 in July. I owned an MC-10 computer when it was new. It was all my parents could afford. I have an old copy of PC Magazine that ranks it as one of the 10 worst computers ever. I loved mine though. I even had an expansion device that upgraded the memory to a whopping 64K.

So you've been playing computer games since they came out basically? I'm curious as to what other classics you've played...I kind of have an interest in the early computer/computer game scene. Sometimes I watch clips from computer shows back in the 80s and it must have been an exciting time in its own way...

I remember playing pong and asteroids on our Atarii system. I remember playing Zork and an Egyptian themed text game (don't recall the name of that one - something to do with pyramids). I played table-top D&D in the early 80's (Aersoldorf is actually the name of a fortress I designed as a DM back in '84). I played X-Wing, a 3-D Star Wars space flight simulator. I played Stratego, Risk and Axis & Allies board games. I played Populus in '89 on an early Apple computer. My favorite computer game from long ago was the Ultima series of RPGs. I played 4 or 5 of them.

I also played Tecmo Bowl on the NES and Super Tecmo Bowl on the SNES.

Ah! You know you can buy the Ultima games for modern OSes on GoG, right? In fact at various times they've given them out for free.

gog.com, they specialize in selling older games for modern OSes...usually by auto-launching it in a DOSBox shell. They have also recently started selling newer games as well, though. Most of their stuff is in the $3-$5 range unless there's a sale of some sort going on.

Yes, our games usually require all major expansions, and if everyone playing has the smaller ones too that's great since some players like to play Civs from them.
